The closest I came, however, was in the 80’s when I met Ethiopians in Israel during the airlift and greeted them at an ab- sorption center in Ashkelon right after they landed on Israeli soil. Supporting Isolated, Emerging, and Returning Jewish Communities Around the Globe “All of Us” Volume 24 Number 1 Spring 2017 Italian Jewish Diversity: Ruth’s Cup at the Seder Table By Rabbi Barbara Aiello photos by Rabbi Barbara Aiello Here in southern Italy, in the “toe” of the Italian “boot,” our Passover table features symbolic foods and ancient ritual practices that, to our Ashkenazi brothers and sisters, seem different from what so many Jews are used to. A cucumber slice serves as the “zeroah” or the “arm of God,” while pieces of celery dipped in vinegar replace the usual parsley and salt water. And what can be said for the long-stemmed green onions used to whack each other on the wrist as we simulate the whips of the slave masters during the singing of “Dayenu?” Here at Sinagoga Ner Tamid del Sud (“The Eternal Light of the South”) in the tiny village of Serrastretta in the Calabrian hills, our members and friends are “B’nei Anusim,” descendants of Italian Jews forced into Christian conversion during Inquisition times. All that we offer, including our Passover seder, is a monument to Jewish diversity--which this year included a new tradition straight from America-- Ruth’s Cup. The inaugural meeting was held in the Binyanei Ha'umah in the presence of the President of the State and Mrs. Shazar, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Knesset, Cabinet Ministers, the Chief Justice, Judges of the Supreme Court, the State Comptroller, visitors from abroad, public dignitaries and a large and representative gathering which filled the entire hall. The meeting was opened by Mr. Jacob Tsur, Chair- man of the Zionist General Council, who paid homage to Israel's Nobel Prize Laureate, the writer S.Y, Agnon, and read the message Mr. Agnon had sent to the gathering. Mr. Tsur also congratulated the poetess and writer, Nellie Zaks. The speaker then went on to discuss the gravity of the time for both the State of Israel and the Zionist Move- ment, and called upon citizens in this country and Zionists throughout the world to stand shoulder to shoulder to over- come the crisis. Professor Andre Chouraqui, Deputy Mayor of the City of Jerusalem, welcomed the delegates on behalf of the City. -

MARCO 1: TISHA B ’AV Batnua DEFINITION AND CONTEXT Tisha B’Av (the ninth of Av) is the day of the Hebrew calendar that observes the worst tragedies that our people 10€ have experienced throughout our history. Among the events that are commemorated on this date are God’s sentence upon the generation of Israelites who left Egypt to wander in the desert for forty years before being given access to the Land of Israel, the destruction of the First Temple (586 BCE), the destruction of the Second Temple (70 CE), the Fall of the Fortress of Betar in the times of Bar Kochva (135 CE), and the edict of expulsion of the Jews from Spain (1492 CE), among others. It is worth mentioning that these events led to the perishing of millions of Jews who lost their lives for the mere fact of being Jewish; we also remember them this day. DID YOU KNOW? • In the kenim of Hanoar Hatzioni, three anthems are usually sung: “Anu Olim”, “Kadima Hanoar” and Hatikvah. Chagim uMoadim from Masorti Olami & MERCAZ Olami בס"ד Lag B’Omer: The Light of Kavod Laughter, music, Israeli dancing (rikudim), playing with bows and arrows, bonfires and roasted potatoes are some of the memories that we associate with this chag, which comes right in the middle of Sefirat haOmer - the counting of the Omer, which we began to count on the second day of Pesach and count each day for seven weeks right until Shavuot. Hence its name “Lag”, (the Hebrew letters equivalent to the number 33) “B’Omer” of the Omer. Returning to the celebrations of Lag B’Omer, we associate this date with one of the greatest rabbis of all time, Rabbi Akiva, as well as another very special character, Bar Koziba, better known as Bar Kochva, as he was named by Rabbi Akiva, due to his Messianic image. At that time, life was complicated; the People of Israel were dominated by the Roman Empire, the Holy Temple of Jerusalem having been destroyed in the year 70 B.C, together with the implementation by the Romans of a number of prohibitions, including the study of the Torah! As if that was not enough, at the beginning of the year 135 BC, a pagan city called Elia Capitolina, as well as a temple dedicated to Roman idols, were built in honor of the Roman Cesar Adriano on the ruins of Jerusalem and the Holy Temple, in an attempt to erase all vestiges of the Jewish presence in the Land of Israel. This not only infuriated and angered the Jews, especially Rabbi Akiva, who had seen the Beit-Hamikdash with his own eyes, but they understood that the possibility of rebuilding the Temple and Jerusalem was becoming more remote. -
