  • Wrestlers Who Have Carried Their Nation's Flag in The
WRESTLERS WHO HAVE CARRIED THEIR NATION’S FLAG IN THE OLYMPICS David G. Curby USA [email protected] Among the leading honors of the Olympic Games is being chosen to carry the Olympic torch, lead the nation’s team into the stadium during the opening ceremonies while carrying the country’s flag, or to speak the oath of the athletes. Many of the most famous athletes have received these honors. An athlete’s selection as the flag bearer for the parade of nations during the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games is a profound distinction and honor. At the opening ceremonies of the2012 London Games there were eight wrestlers who were given this honor. The opening ceremony marks the beginning of the new Olympic Games and has grown to be an eagerly anticipated event. The various rituals of the Olympic Games are best understood not as recoveries of Ancient Greek ritual but as inventions of tradition. The Olympic Oath- taking ceremony and the Olympic flag were not introduced until 1920, and the first Olympic Village in 1932. The torch relay is a case in point. It was first introduced in the 1936 Olympics—the “Nazi” Olympics, as a means of linking symbolically the project of constructing a Germanic culture rooted in proclamations of Aryan supremacy to the Hellenic culture of the ancient Greeks. The torch relay became a permanent fixture. The 1908 London Games were the first to use a procession. This was the first Olympic Games opening ceremony with a March of the athletes in which they carried the flags of their countries).

Thank you for providing this opportunity to International Federations as well as individuals to participate in this important process. The theme of Athletes: at the heart of the Olympic Movement resonated with me in light of events and efforts within our wrestling community. Allow me to offer comments directed towards KEEPING THE ATHLETES’ EXPERIENCE AT THE HEART OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES. KEEPING THE ATHLETES’ EXPERIENCE AT THE HEART OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES Among the biggest honors of the Olympic Games is being chosen to carry the Olympic torch, lead the nation’s team into the stadium during the opening ceremonies while carrying the country’s flag, or to speak the oath of the athletes. Many of the most famous athletes have received these honors. An athlete’s selection as the flag bearer for the parade of nations during the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games is a profound distinction and honor. As I watched the ceremonies of the London Games of 2012, I was struck by the number of wrestlers there were being mentioned as their nation’s flag bearer. This prompted me to do some further research regarding the history of this tradition, as well as how wrestlers have been involved in this tradition.

  • Britain's Olympic Heritage
Britain’s Olympic Heritage Launceston Elliott George Con O’Kelly DeRelwyskow Stanley Bacon 1896 Athens, Greece April 6th - 13th The wrestling competition consisted of just one event, a Greco Roman style competition without any weight restrictions. Five particpants took part in the competition with Great Britain represented by Launceston Elliott. Launceston Elliot Launceston Elliot secures his place in Britain's wrestling heritage as the country's first wrestling representative in the modern Olympic Games at the time of their revival in Athens in 1896. Just five competitors took part in the single Greco Roman style competition. Launceston Elliot outweighed his opponent, the German Carl Schuman, but was outclassed (by the eventual first Olympic champion since Aurelius Aelix of Phoenicia in 213 A.D.) and eliminated from the competition. Launceston even has the distinction of being one of Britain's first medal winners, a gold and a silver, though unfortunately not for his wrestling skills. Wrestling was a bit of a sideline for Launceston, who was primarily a weightlifter. He went into the record books as Britain's first gold medal winner when he won the one- handed lift competition in Athens. He took silver medal in the two handed lift, with gold awarded to Viggo Jensen of Denmark who was judged to have the superior style when both men lifted the same weight. Launceston also competed in the 100 metres race and rock climbing event. Launceston Elliot was born in India (and named after the Australian town in which he was conceived) before moving to England when he was thirteen years old, where he developed his skills as a lifter under the guidance of Eugen Sandow.
