Archway Commencement Issue, May 2014 2014 Commencement Issue From the President Dear Members of the Bryant University Class of 2014, As you process through Bryant’s historic Archway, prepared to receive your degree and begin the next phase of your life’s path, the entire University community joins you in celebrating the successful completion of your undergraduate studies. We call this event Commencement because it is not just an ending, but also a new beginning as you enter the world ready to apply your knowledge, skills, and talents to make a difference and lead a life of character. When you arrived at Bryant four years ago, you experienced many changes and exciting opportunities to expand your world: a new place to live, exposure to innovative and inspiring ideas in the classroom, a new group of friends, and an expanded global perspective of the world’s interconnected cultures and econo- mies. Now you will experience a new set of changes as you leave campus to begin your professional life or continue your edu- cation in graduate school. Always recognize that change is a constant in life and you must embrace it and remain flexible in your approach. Most of you will have several jobs, some mul- tiple careers, over your lifetime. Even the concept of retirement has changed with many people working well into their seventies – some beyond that. Bryant has a 150-year tradition of exceptional education that anticipates the future, and our future students, in a changing world. Your undergraduate education is distinguished by the University’s core values, so that you remain open to the world of global opportunity and achieve your success over the long run, always seeking your passion. Your graduation is an inflection point in your relationship with your alma mater. In the years ahead, there is a shared responsibility between you and the institution. At Bryant, we will continue to step boldly forward with strate- gic goals that enhance the value of a Bryant degree and increase the competitive advantage of your diploma. As new programs and courses develop, we will maintain our commitment to academic excellence, which will always remain the foundation of a Bryant education. As a new graduate, you will now become a member of the Bryant Alumni Association. The Archway 2014 Commencement Issue u 2 Student Class Charge: Alisheya Luthman Bryant has been our home away from home, our second family, our support group, and the thing we are holding onto with our dear lives… because now all the changes have begun. Especially seeing that we just walked under the Archway - something we have avoided for four years until this day. We are going from the college life; which consists of picking and choosing what to go to, taking personal days, staying up until the sun rises - to the “real world”, with jobs and bills, student loans, a 40 hour work week, and a much earlier bed time. Shortly, we will each receive one of the highest honors Bryant University can bestow upon us. We will receive a diploma that signifies all the dedication and work we have put into this great institution, and it has put into us. Remember, what we were told at orientation would come “faster than we think?” Well, it has. However, along with these sad and scared emotions, we should also feel excited and prepared for what we will be facing once we leave the grounds of Bryant University. Our class is made up of intelligent, strong, passionate, people. In the last few years, however, Asians have sprung up on shows like “Glee” and “America’s Best Dance Crew” in disproportionately large numbers, challenging entrenched stereotypes and creating new audiovisual associations with Asianness. While a particular social or ethnic group’s music may reflect characteristics of that group, it also functions in creating the identity of the group. In Andean Bolivia, the cholo ethnic group has very subjective and constantly changing boundaries. Cholo-ness is made possible through mediated cultural performances of all types, in which members actively choose elements from both criollo and Indian cultures. Music is one particularly effective way in which cholos create and maintain their identity. This thesis focuses on the ways in which cholos use music to create a hybrid identity in and around Cochabamba, Bolivia. As a result, researchers frequently misconstrue the cultural and ethnic differences observed in children's play, and therefore, misinterpret child behavior and trajectories for development. Individual development occurs within socio-cultural and historical contexts based on the experiences, beliefs, values, and expectations of a given cultural milieu. The purpose of this research study is to investigate parental expectations based on how they interpret and understand the effects of play on children in Arab regions. To provide this backdrop, this research study is based in a predominantly Muslim country influenced by its religious teaching (Maktabi, 2016; Wheeler, 2000). Making sense of how play is represented in this population will provide a foundation for further research into how play connects to child development.

In 2003, the song “Where Is the Love?” by international music sensation The Black-Eyed Peas, swept the tops of billboard charts. With a hip-hop vibe and boundary-crossing critique of war, terrorism, discrimination, and hate crimes, the song’s themes moved fans of all ages, races, and backgrounds. Using this connection, our project emphasizes cross-departmental collaboration, and is grounded in the belief that in Freshman Composition courses the writing professor and the research librarian must work together for successful writing and research based projects. In “Writing Information Literacy: Contributions to a Concept” Rolf Norgaard (2003) urges librarians and writing instructors to have “informed conversation between writing and information literacy as disciplines and fields of endeavor.” Following this approach, the results of our activity initiated a coordinated restructuring of the library-writing course curriculum. This paper will focus on student learning outcomes, challenges of the activity, student feedback, and post-assessment adjustments. 3 Pedagogical Approach Billy Joel’s song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” (1989) originally inspired this activity; the previous Instruction Librarian used it to generate keywords for students doing a research search string activity.

So I jumped on a call with Guetta to discuss the set; how Florida, which was criticized at the beginning of the pandemic for spring breakers partying on the beach, has handled the pandemic more recently; which of his dance peers he would like to see do a similar benefit performance, and why these difficult times have changed his musical focus going forward. In 2009, the group became one of only 11 artists to have simultaneously held the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 , with their singles "Boom Boom Pow " and "I Gotta Feeling "; these two singles topped the chart for an unprecedented 26 consecutive weeks in 2009. The album later produced a third Hot 100 number-one placement with "Imma Be", making the group one of few to ever place three number one singles on the chart from the same album before being followed with "Rock That Body" & "Meet Me Halfway " which managed to peak in the Top 10 of Hot 100. "I Gotta Feeling" became the first single to sell more than 1 million downloads in the United Kingdom . The Black Eyed Peas were ranked 12th on the Billboard 's Decade- End Chart Artist of the Decade, and 7th in the Hot 100 Artists of the Decade.

It is a motivational ride to help your students commit to their goals for improving themselves for the New Year. This is a great profile to do after you’ve already inspired them to discover their why in How Big is Your Why. Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be a “New Year’s Ride”—you can inspire them to make changes any time of the year. It’s just extra relevant early in the year. Objective The objective of this ride is to inspire students to realize that in order to meet their goals, it’s up to them to make the necessary changes. No one will do it for them, just like no one else will turn the pedals for them or turn up the resistance. The beauty of our indoor cycling classes is that our challenges on the bike become analogies for life, so this is an inspirational life-changing ride for those who decide to take note of the message. But not everyone is open to that idea; they might think it’s silly, they might not be quite ready to take the responsibility.
