We have found that it is complete and satisfactory in all respects, and that any and all revisions required by the final examining committee have been made. v Copyright © 2015 By Bahne Bahnson vi ABSTRACT This study explored transformational adult learning and thru-hiker culture on the Appalachian Trail, employing autoethnography as research methodology within the qualitative research tradition (Creswell, 2007). The researcher explored thru-hiker culture by hiking the complete Appalachian Trail for five months, involving a 2,185 mile journey experienced as a continuous “flip-flop” hike. The researcher began hiking northbound from Mount Greylock, Massachusetts on June 25, 2014. Mount Katahdin, Maine, the A.T. northern terminus was summited August 15, 2014. The southbound journey commenced August 20, 2014 from Mount Greylock and ended at the summit of Springer, Mountain, Georgia, the southern terminus November 22, 2014. Personal observations through daily blog posts and weekly newspaper articles were collected, and used to critically reflect on the experience, a process integral to transformational adult learning, and achieving an understanding of thru-hiker culture. Themes associated with the transformational learning included compassion, community, and simplicity. Theories used to analyze learning included Flow theory (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990), Hierarchy of Needs theory (Maslow, 1970), Ulysses Factor (Anderson, 1970), and Transformational Adult Learning theory (Brookfield, 1987, Mezirow, 1991). A description of thru-hiker culture revealed a unique hierarchy among participants, distinctive norms regarding social interaction, language, and concepts of self and others. The study illustrated the intimate relationship between the self as an independent actor and also member of a culture (Bruner, 1990). The study reveals A.T. thru- hiker culture through a description of the experience, knowledge gained from critical reflection on the experience, and the role of physical and psychological challenge on the emerging self.     58. Northeastern Highlands The Northeastern Highlands ecoregion covers most of the northern and mountainous parts of New England as well as the Adirondacks in New York. It is a relatively sparsely populated region compared to adjacent regions, and is characterized by hills and mountains, a mostly Ecoregions of New England forested land cover, nutrient-poor frigid and cryic soils (mostly Spodosols), and numerous high-gradient streams and glacial lakes. Forest vegetation is somewhat transitional between the boreal regions to the north in Canada and the broadleaf deciduous forests to the south. Typical forest types include northern hardwoods (maple-beech-birch), northern hardwoods/spruce, and northeastern spruce-fir forests. Recreation, tourism, and forestry are primary land uses. Farm-to-forest conversion began in the 19th century and continues today. In spite of this trend, Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and 5 level III ecoregions and 40 level IV ecoregions in the New England states and many Commission for Environmental Cooperation Working Group, 1997, Ecological regions of North America – toward a common perspective: Montreal, Commission for Environmental Cooperation, 71 p. alluvial valleys, glacial lake basins, and areas of limestone-derived soils are still farmed for dairy products, forage crops, apples, and potatoes. In addition to the timber industry, recreational homes and associated lodging and services sustain the forested regions economically, but quantity of environmental resources; they are designed to serve as a spatial framework for continue into ecologically similar parts of adjacent states or provinces. they also create development pressure that threatens to change the pastoral character of the region.

The county’s natural features - including mountains, forests, productive soil, streams, fresh air and wildlife - serve to distinguish the greater Roanoke Valley as a uniquely attractive urban center. Roanoke County citizens recognize that the beauty of the existing natural environment attracts not only businesses and residents to our community but also tourists and sports enthusiasts. County citizens believe that it is essential to maintain the high quality of Roanoke County’s environment while accommodating the pressures for future growth and development. OPEN SPACE During the past twenty-five years, Roanoke County has experienced steady growth. From a population of 53,800 in 1970 that reflects the results of several annexations, the population grew 54 percent to 83,100 in 1995. Future population projections indicate that by the year 2010 the County population will be approximately 87,400. This growth in population and the accompanying shift in demographics - such as an aging population - are changing the traditional rural landscape of the County. New residents require more housing, schools, shopping centers, office buildings, roads, water and sewer facilities and parks and recreational services. The rural landscape is gradually becoming urbanized as a result of this growth. What was once an orchard is now a residential subdivision or a shopping center. What was once a hardwood forest is now an office building or condominium. Between 1982 and 1992 the number of farms in Roanoke County decreased 11 percent from 306 to 272.

    FFLA 2015 New Hampshire Chapter Report The New Hampshire Chapter regained one former member in June. At the end of the year there were six FFLA Plus members and twelve Regular members for a total of 18 paid members and two complimentary memberships (White Mountain National Forest and NH Forest Protection Bureau.) There were no chapter activities during the year. The State continued staffing its towers only during Class 3 (high) and higher fire danger weather. The State hired contractors who did extensive rehabilitation work at Green Mountain where a new cab was installed on the tower and at Mt. Prospect where renovations will finish up in 2016. New tower cabs are planned for Warner Hill and Pitcher Mountain. In September Historicorps experts visited Smarts Mountain tower in Lyme, NH on the Appalachian Trail. Plans are underway to replace the tower cab roof and make repairs to the watchman’s cabin during 2016. Fire activity was high during April and May as reported in the Lookout Network. 98 Fires burned 595 acres during the year with most occurring in the spring. The largest fire was 275 acres which was more acres than burned during the past two years combined! Both the State of New Hampshire and the White Mountain National Forest sent several crews and many single resources out of state to help suppress fires in the western states. A few folks were lucky enough to be on two fire crews. The White Mountain National Forest took delivery of a second Type 6 Wildland Fire engine during the summer. This engine replaces one purchased in 2003 which had become outdated.

It begins on WV CR15 at the parking lot for the Hanging Rock Raptor Migration Observatory, and follows the Allegheny Trail south along the crest of Peters Mountain mostly on old logging and forest service roads. The hike is a stiff uphill on the relocated Andy Layne Trail and then a scenic ridge walk overlooking Carvins Cove, before descending Tinker Mountain. *************************************************************************** Apple Orchard Falls, Cornelius Creek Loop 5.7 miles, Moderate, $2.50 carpool fee 26 miles from Roanoke This is a popular hike located in the North Creek camping area, near Arcadia. A blue-blazed trail, steep in places, leads uphill to Apple Orchard Falls. The falls are impressive and the trail has been greatly improved in recent years.
