16. asırda kâfir Samsun’u fetheden Fatih’in komutanlarından halen Bursa’da metfun Hamza Bey’in kızı Hatice Hatun dikkat çekici bir davayla gündeme gelmiştir. How Medical Functions Shaped Architecture in Anatolian Seljuk Darüşşifas (hospitals) and Especially in The Divriği Turan Malik Darüşşifa Betül BAKIR*, İbrahim BAŞAĞAOĞLU** * Ph.D., Yildiz Technical University, Institution of Higher Education. İstanbul-Turkey e-mail: [email protected] **Ph.D., Istanbul University, Cerrahpasha Medical Faculty, Department of Deontology and History of Medicine. İstanbul-Turkey e-mail: [email protected] Summary The dominant cultural effectiveness of the Seljuks, which affected different nations and regional races within the borders of their empire that stretched from Central Asia to Cairo, has left behind famous civilizations which are today within the borders of various countries (India, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Turkey, etc.). As for structural characteristics, in an atmosphere whose origin is rooted in pagan culture and architecture formed by its symbols is continued, the form does not change when planning big buildings or where the “house” is concerned. The root lies back in the Central Asian house or multifunctional Turcoman tent. Hospitals were so improved that various establishments developed in a way that suited the needs of the period’s social life, ruling administration and military life. To group these: Mobile hospitals were to be found in caravans behind the soldiers who were fighting. In the Malik Shah Era, in the Seljuk army there were military hospitals carried by 40 camels. Seljuk hospitals were caravanserai hospitals, palace hospitals, and serving public, usually within the structure of a medical madrasah, darüşşifas. It was inconceivable for a culture whose scope is as deep and wide as this to not affect the West that was drowning in the conservative religion suppression of the Middle Ages.

WOMEN PATRONS IN MEDIEVAL ANATOLIA AND A DISCUSSION OF MĀHBARĪ KHĀTŪN’S MOSQUE COMPLEX IN KAYSERI PATRICIA BLESSING* At the center of Kayseri, facing the well-preserved citadel stands a large architectural complex, consisting of a mosque, madrasa, mauso- leum, and the ruins of a double bathhouse [See figure 1]. The building, known locally as the Hunad Hatun or Huand Hatun Complex, was built in the second quarter of the thirteenth century. Inscriptions on both por- tals of the mosque date to 1237-38, while the other parts of the complex remain undated. At the time of construction, the patron of the complex, Māhbarī Khātūn, was the mother of the ruling Sultan Ghiyāth al-Dīn Kaykhusraw II (R 1237-46) and of the widows of the Sultan ‘Alā’ al-Dīn Kayqubād (R 1219-37).1 With her intervention in Kayseri and the con- struction of two caravanserais near Tokat and Yozgat, Māhbarī Khātūn is one of the most prolific female patrons in medieval Anatolia, and the one who is best documented inmonumental inscriptions, although not in much detail in other written sources of the period, such as chronicles and hagiographies. * Dr., Stanford Humanities Center, Stanford University, 424 Santa Teresa Street, Stan- ford, CA 94305, USA; [email protected]. 1 In modern Turkish, the name is more commonly spelled as Mahperi Hatun. Huand Hatun appears as a Turkish adaptation of the titles Khwand Khātūn. Another wife of the Sultan ‘Alā’ al-Dīn Kayqubād was Iṣmat al-Dunyā wa’l-Dīn al-Malika al-‘Ādila, a daughter of the Ayyubid ruler of Syria, al-Malik al-Ashraf Abū Bakr b.

Çalışmanın başlıca iki konusundan biri olan Türkiye Selçuklu Siyasi Tarihi; bu dönemde hüküm süren sultanların önemli faaliyetlerinin yer aldığı bölümler halinde hazırlanmıştır. Diğer ana konu Anadolu Beylikleri ise, Beylikler’in isimlerinin yer aldığı başlıklar halinde verilmiştir. Kitabın başında yer alan Süleymanşah, I. Kılıç Arslan ve I. Mesud Dönemi başlıkları, genelde bu konular çok iyi bilinmediği için biraz daha ayrıntılı işlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Böylece öğrencilerin derse hazırlanmada kolaylıkla kullanabileceği bir ders kitabı haline getirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Metni hazırlarken daha önce yazmış olduğumuz makale, bildiri, madde ve kitaplardan faydalandığımız gibi bu alanda söz sahibi Prof. Dr. Osman Turan, Prof. Dr. Faruk Sümer, Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Merçil, Prof. Dr. Işın Demirkent ve Prof. Dr. Abdülkerim Özaydın gibi değerli tarihçilerin eserlerinden yararlandık. • THE SHADOW of the SILK ROAD and the SELJUKS Cultural Gateway to Infinity
THE SHADOW OF THE SILK ROAD AND THE SELJUKS Cultural Gateway to Infinity 10th -13th Century Islamic Art, Architecture and Philosophy Led by the Seljuk Art historian Tuesday, June 25th - Sunday, July 7th (12 Nights, 13 Days) The Seljuk period was undoubtedly one of the most intensively creative periods in the history of the Islamic world. It displayed splendid achievements in every artistic field, with subtle differences from one region to the next. The Seljuk period in the history of art and architecture extended for about two centuries, from the Seljuk conquest in the second quarter of the 11th century to the establishment of the Ilkhanid dynasty in the second quarter of the 13th century. During this period, the center of power within the Islamic world shifted from the Arab territories to Anatolia and Iran, with the traditional centers now residing in the Seljuk capitals. Anatolia produced three great leaders in the world of humanism: Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi (1207-1273), Haci Bektas Veli (1210-1271) and Yunus Emre (1238-1320). Just half a century after these three leaders, the three great humanists of the west appeared: Dante (1265-1321), Petrarch (1304-1374) and Boccaccio (1313-1375). Day 1 Istanbul and fly to Ankara Cukurhan Hotel (luxury special category) Participants in the small group are met by a Peten Travels staff member upon their arrival and walked to the internal terminal for the Ankara flight, transferred by our tour leader and checked into Cukurhan hotel. Guests meet one another along with the specialist over a welcome drink before sitting down to dinner.

  • Functional Spaces and Furnishing Designs in the Historical Anatolian Seljuk and Ottoman Hospitals
Islamic Heritage Architecture and Art II 209 FUNCTIONAL SPACES AND FURNISHING DESIGNS IN THE HISTORICAL ANATOLIAN SELJUK AND OTTOMAN HOSPITALS GÜLŞEN DİŞLİ* Department of Architecture, Necmettin Erbakan University, Turkey ABSTRACT Understanding of working principles, conceptual designs and specific characteristics of the functional spaces in historical hospitals is vitally important for improving proper maintenance and preservation programs by which survival of those buildings could be achieved for the sake of next generations. Properly determining of such functional spaces ranging from patients’ rooms, pharmacy, policlinics, latrines, surgery rooms, baths to kitchens regards several comprehensive studies. However, there are only a few studies conducted on the determination of functional spaces in the Anatolian Seljuk and Ottoman hospitals. Furthermore, there is no any specific study yet carried out on how those spaces developed, and on their original furnishing designation. Therefore, this article first aims to portray different functions of the spaces located in the Anatolian hospitals built from the thirteen to eighteen centuries. Portraying of the functional spaces includes examination of their construction history, original furnishing designs and interior fittings as well. As a matter of fact, all those spaces collectively reflect their regional features and developmental stage of their own period. By using an extensive collection of evaluations on functional spaces from twelve historical Seljuk and Ottoman hospitals, this article includes some comparative studies of common and uncommon features of historic hospitals in these two periods in terms of their functional spaces and furnishing design by using primary and secondary sources, together with in-situ observations. Thus, the research also reveals the similarities and differences as well as periodic developments of original functional spaces and their furnishing designs in historical hospitals between Seljuk and Ottoman periods.

www.ModernSilkRoadTour.com ABOUT THE SILK ROAD The Silk Road, the ancient network of trading routes stretching more than 15,000 kilometers from Japan, the Korean Peninsula through today’s Central Asia, Caucasus and Anatolia to the Mediterranean Sea, dates back to the second century BC. Formally established during the Han Dynasty of China (221–207 BC), the network began to be used regularly from 130 BC, when the Han officially opened trade with the West. However, the greatest legacy of the Silk Road was the exchange of ideas and beliefs: culture, art, religion, philosophy, technology, language, science and architecture. It left an indelible mark on famous travelers, philosophers and warriors - from Marco Polo to Genghis Khan and the Sufi poet Rumi. During antiquity some of the main traders along the Silk Road were the Chinese, Arabs, Somalis, Syrians, Jews, Persians, Greeks and Romans. During medieval times, the Turkic states and peoples assumed an important place in the development as well as the protection of the Silk Road. For example, during the Seljuki Empire spanned from 1060 to around 1307, the Silk Road expanded its leading role in the world economy. The number of the caravanserais constructed along the Silk Road tremendously increased in this period of time. These caravanserais took their unique place in the pages of history as the symbols of cross-fertilization of the cultures along the Silk Road. Meanwhile, together with the other historical monuments, they became the representatives of the rich historical and cultural Turkic heritage in this corridor. Today, the Silk Road prevails as an out of box and attractive tourism destination for the curious tourists who would like to experience a unique journey from the past to the present.
