New Lissamphibians and Squamates from the Maastrichtian of Haţeg Basin, Romania New lissamphibians and squamates from the Maastrichtian of Haţeg Basin, Romania Annelise Folie and Vlad Codrea Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 50 (1), 2005: 57-71 Numerous remains of amphibians and squamates were discovered in the continental sediments of the Maastrichtian Sânpetru Formation, south of Pui Village (Haţeg Basin, western Romania). The lissamphibians are represented by a salamander-like allocaudatan (Albanerpeton sp.) and at least two discoglossid frogs (cf. Eodiscoglossus sp. and cf. Paradiscoglossus sp.). The numerous lizards are represented by, e.g., the teiid Bicuspidon hatzegiensis sp. nov., and for the first time in a Late Cretaceous site, by two species of the paramacellodid Becklesius (Becklesius nopcsai sp. nov. and Becklesius cf. B. hoffstetteri). Snakes are also present in this site by an indeterminante madtsoiid, which represents the first occurrence of this family in eastern Europe. The presence of Albanerpeton in this site confirms that this genus appeared in Europe by at least the Late Cretaceous instead of Miocene as previously thought. The presence of both Albanerpeton and Bicuspidon in Haţeg Basin suggests a North American influence on eastern European amphibian and lacertilian faunas by Maastrichtian times. Besides these, more lacertilian material is available, including a single right mandible, different from both the above mentioned genera from Iharkút, and from other previously known taxa. This specimen is described here as Chromatogenys tiliquoides gen. nov. sp. nov. The open Meckelian canal, the wide subdental shelf with deep sulcus dentalis, and the pleurodont teeth support referral of the specimen to Scincomorpha. Within that, Chromatogenys differs from groups known from Iharkút, such as polyglyphanodontines and chamopsiids, and is also distinct from other contemporary scincomorphs from Europe, North America and Asia. It exhibits a combination of mixed characters, some of which are shared by scincids, cordylids and contogeniids. Chromatogenys might be a representative of a new family within Scincomorpha but currently should be 1 considered of uncertain familiar relationships (familia incertae sedis) until more material is found. Chromatogenys had a durophagous dentition similar to extant skinks such as Tiliqua, and most probably had similar diet composed of molluscs, eggs, insects, small vertebrates and fruits.

The locality is an open-pit bauxite mine near the village of Iharkút in the northern Bakony Mts, western Hungary. The bones were found in the Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) Csehbánya Formation, which is an alluvial floodplain deposit, mainly consisting of variegated clays, siltstones, sand and sandstones. Most of the remains were yielded by a bone-bed type layer, deposited as a result of a sudden flood. In this sediment all vertebrate remains are isolated bones of different animals. Fish remains are abundant among these bones. Three taxa are present in the material. One of them is an indeterminate pycnodontiform represented by several hundreds of isolated teeth and 18 lower jaws. These jaws bear 3-4 rows of characteristic teeth. Pycnodontiform fishes are mainly marine, but from a few localities they were identified in fresh-water sediments, similar to the Iharkút locality. The other two fishes are lepisosteiform ones identified as Lepisosteus sp. and Atractosteus sp. Lepisosteus is represented by teeth with a simple, pin-shaped apex and by a few ganoid scales. Atractosteus can be identified in the material after teeth similar to those of Lepisosteus but having compressed, lance-like apexes, and after three characteristic vertebrae.

Here we report on the fossilized remains of numerous individuals (small juveniles to large adults) of a new taxon, Pannoniasaurus inexpectatus gen. et sp. nov. from the Csehba´nya Formation, Hungary (Santonian, Upper Cretaceous, 85.3–83.5 mya) that represent the first known mosasauroid that lived in freshwater environments. Previous to this find, only one specimen of a marine mosasauroid, cf. Plioplatecarpus sp., is known from non-marine rocks in Western Canada. Pannoniasaurus inexpectatus gen. et sp. nov. uniquely possesses a plesiomorphic pelvic anatomy, a non-mosasauroid but pontosaur-like tail osteology, possibly limbs like a terrestrial lizard, and a flattened, crocodile-like skull. Cladistic analysis reconstructs P. inexpectatus in a new clade of mosasauroids: (Pannoniasaurus (Tethysaurus (Yaguarasaurus, Russellosaurus))). P. inexpectatus is part of a mixed terrestrial and freshwater faunal assemblage that includes fishes, amphibians turtles, terrestrial lizards, crocodiles, pterosaurs, dinosaurs and birds.
