• Isle of Coastal Path

The Isle of is a developing long distance route that follows much of the island’s coastline. The path primarily caters for walkers however cyclists and horse riders can also enjoy certain sections. The Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path falls within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which covers 95% of the coast. It passes through landscape that includes a mixture of farmland, coastal heath, dunes, salt-marsh, foreshore, cliffs and a few small pockets of woodland. This includes a National Nature Reserve.

Length: 125 miles / 200km

The highlights are perhaps, Mountain (highest point on the island), lighthouse and sea cliffs, Bwa Gwyn sea arches at , Ynys y Fydlyn at Carmel Head, and Porth Wen, Llanddwyn island, Nature Reserve and Point and Priory.

Copper Kingdom

Amlwch was once deemed by a local 18th century cartographer and customs official to be undeserving of being included on a map of sheltering ports for ships and sailors, since it was a "mere cove between two rocks". Copper was needed everywhere as the industrial revolution was underway, coins were being minted, and Nelson wanted copper sheathing for his ships. As many as 40 copper cargos and in-bound tobacco leaf ships could be anchored at Amlwch, and such was the congestion that an act of Parliament was passed to enlarge Amlwch’s access and berth capacity. The “mere cove between two rocks” was now on every nautical map.

The source of copper was Parys Mountain, where some 1500 men and women were employed in hazardous conditions.

• Holyhead Maritime Museum

• Ask the local divers and they will tell you about the wealth of marine life to be found around the island. It is one of the UK’s favourite diving destinations. They will tell you of the fascinating wrecks, now supporting that marine life. Unfortunately, many souls perished on the North Wales coast, and in the maritime museum you will be introduced to the tales of those who survived, and those who didn’t. • Many survivors will have owed their lives to the lifeboat stalwarts. The museum once housed the oldest lifeboat station in Wales, founded by the independent Anglesey Lifesaving Association. There is, within the museum, a great collection of Holyhead lifeboat models from 1857-1928, and you might wonder how on earth they fared against the Irish Sea. • During World War II, Holyhead Harbour was also a target for the German Luftwaffe. As enemy bombers headed for and Lancashire, some of the homeward bound planes would target the British Navy and Royal Dutch Navy shipping vessels taking shelter on Anglesey. As part of the museum's complex there is a permanent exhibition "Holyhead at War" housed in a Second World War air raid shelter situated alongside the maritime museum. Beach Road Holyhead LL65 1ES

• Llynnon Mill

Anglesey is known as the "Granary of Wales" due to the large quantities of barley and oats once grown here. At one time the island had about 50 working windmills and nearly as many watermills.

Llynnon Mill was built in 1775 and operated until 1918 when it suffered severe damage from a storm. Today, Llynnon Mill operates as an agricultural museum, securing museum registration status in 2001, and produces stoneground wholemeal flour using organic wheat. Llynnon Mill is the only working windmill in Wales.

Roundhouses

Two roundhouses, 10m in diameter and built from timber with wattle and daub walls and a thatched roof, provide an unique impression of the prehistoric past.

Developments include the furnishing and decoration of one of the roundhouses to reflect a living late prehistoric roundhouse. This reconstructed settlement is typical of what existed on Anglesey and north west Wales, about 3000 years ago.

Linking Llynnon Mill and the nearby Howell Water Mill - this three mile trail will take you about one and a quarter hours to walk.

There is probably no finer place to enjoy a traditional Welsh tea than at the Llynnon tearoom. Fine home cooking can be enjoyed in beautiful surroundings and a varied menu can also be sampled. • Llyn Alaw

• Penmon Priory

The rise of Christianity in the 6th century was accompanied by the building of monasteries in remote places. Two were built at opposite ends of Anglesey. St Cybi’s monastery was built at Holyhead or Caergybi in Welsh (fort of St Cybi), and the other on the north-eastern side, called Penmon (the head of Anglesey). The two saints were friends, walking the breadth of the island for a weekly meeting.

Penmon has a range of different and interesting buildings. The oldest is probably St ’s well, thought to have healing powers, and visited by pilgrims.

Nearby, across the treacherous sound is , or Ynys Seiriol (Seiriol’s Island). A small community was established here at St Seiriol, and a number of mediaeval monastic buildings are to be found here.

South Stack is set in a spectacular location to the north-west of Holyhead. In 1645 when lighthouses were privately owned, King Charles II was petitioned for a patent to build a lighthouse on South Stack. The request was refused. However, 143 years after the original petition, Trinity House leased South Stack island and construction of the lighthouse commenced. On 9 February 1809, the station's oil lamps, designed by Daniel Alexander at a cost of £12,000, were first lit. In 1828 an iron suspension bridge was built to replace the rope catwalk that originally linked the lighthouse to the bottom of the 400 steps down the cliff face. They are not all lighthouse enthusiasts, willing to face the challenge of 400 steps down, and the same number on the return journey.

Far from it, South Stack offers a wealth of bird life from the RSPB's Ellin’s Tower.
