Movie Review
CRITICAL ANALYSIS The three movies taken up for this Analysis are as follows: A BEAUTIFUL MIND Written by: Akiva Goldsman Directed by: Ron Howard (English) ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST Written by: Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman Directed by: Milos Foreman (English) SURAJ KA SATVAN GHODA Written by: Dharamveer Bharati Directed by: Shyam Benegal (Hindi) PREMISE of the movie A beautiful Mind: Based loosely on a true story, A Beautiful Mind tells of a brilliant young mathematician named John Nash (Russell Crowe) who lived a life of genius tainted by mental breakdown. Married to his ever- faithful sweetheart Alicia (Jennifer Connelly) Nash lived a secret life as a Government agent, deciphering codes for the mysterious William Parcher (Ed Harris) in order to help the United States win the Cold War. The story begins in the early years of Nash's life at Princeton University as he develops his "original idea" that will revolutionize the world of mathematics. Early in the movie, Nash begins developing paranoid schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes while painfully watching the loss and burden his condition brings on his wife and friends. Suraj ka satvan ghoda: In this movie, the narrator, Manek Mullah (Rajit Kapur) tells three stories of the three women, Neena Gupta (the poor), Pallavi Joshi (the intellectual) and Rajeshwari Sachdev (middle class), he had met in his life at different times. These three stories are nothing but a single story seen from stands of different characters of the film. The lowest, slowest or the weakest in a group or society determines the speed or progress of the whole. -

This is only a list on Indian films based on literary works from writers from all around the world or on the lives and writings of Indian authors. I have only included the films that I’ve watched and liked as well as a few that I’d love to watch. There are many more, but I’ve skipped really mainstream films, so you will not find here any Bollywood stuff apart from some of its Golden Ages, the 1950’s. Suggestions are welcome. For more films based on literature check Encyclopaedia of Hindi Cinema (Ed. Gulzar, Govind Nihalani, Saibal Chatterjee) and Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema (Ashish Rajadhyaksha & Paul Willemen) . Also see the invaluable information given by Chasingbutterflies and Madhuranjan below on the posts. In the future I’ll try to find time to write a small article on Indian cinema and literature. But for the moment, this is it… Films not in the database (yet): 1) GHASIRAM KOTWAL (Mani Kaul, 1976) based on the Marathi play of the same name by Vijay Tendulkar . 2) CHAR ADHYAY (Kumar Shahani, 1997) based on a novel of the same name by Rabindranath Tagore . 3) IJAAZAT (Gulzar, 1987) based on Subodh Ghosh’s Jotu Griha . 4) JUNOON (Shyam Benegal, 1978) based on Ruskin Bond’s novella A Flight of Pigeons . 5) KABULIWALA (Tapan Sinha, 1965) based on the same name short story by Rabindranath Tagore . -

The 15Th Edition of Imagineindia International Film Festival Will Kick out Next 17 May in Madrid
“The 15th edition of Imagineindia International Film Festival will kick out next 17 may in Madrid. A prelude of the festival has had its space at the headquarters of B The Travel Brand Xperience in April and will continue in may and June. A total of 71 films in 14 sections, 7 venues (Filmoteca Española, B The Travel Brand Xperience, Teatro del barrio, Casa Asia, Función Lenguaje, Russian Center of science and culture and C.C. Pilar Miró) for 16 days will give good account of the independent film scene. Comedies, thrillers, dramas and much more where the public can choose to their taste! To highlight the films on/of Russian director Igor Savchenko, the Indian actress Suchitra Sen and the most outstanding concerned about social inequalities Indian director Shyam Benegal. Abound in the sections which reflect the efforts of the great institutions of India as the Tata Institute (TISS), or Public Broadcasting Service (PSBT) that year after year bring to the festival films from research on social trends, gender rights, situations of conflict, among many other social issues. If everybody’s mouth echoes the word Bollywood with the imminence of their awards in Madrid, Imagineindia has for 15 years been showing great Maestros who have left their mark in our lives through “other cinema”.
