Looking at Popular Muslim Films Through the Lens of Genre

Looking at Popular Muslim Films through the Lens of Genre Asmita Das Department of Film Studies, Jadavpur University, Kolkata. ORCID: 0000-0002-7307-5818. Email: [email protected] Received February 25, 2017; Revised April 9, 2017; Accepted April 10, 2017; Published May 7, 2017. Abstract This essay engages with genre as a theory and how it can be used as a framework to determine whether Islamicate or the Muslim films can be called a genre by themselves, simply by their engagement with and representation of the Muslim culture or practice. This has been done drawing upon the influence of Hollywood in genre theory and arguments surrounding the feasibility / possibility of categorizing Hindi cinema in similar terms. The essay engages with films representing Muslim culture, and how they feed into the audience’s desires to be offered a window into another world (whether it is the past or the inner world behind the purdah). It will conclude by trying to ascertain whether the Islamicate films fall outside the categories of melodrama (which is the most prominent and an umbrella genre that is represented in Indian cinema) and forms a genre by itself or does the Islamicate form a sub-category within melodrama. Keywords: genre, Muslim socials, socials, Islamicate films, Hindi cinema, melodrama. 1. Introduction The close association between genre and popular culture (in this case cinema) ensured generic categories (structured by mass demands) to develop within cinema for its influence as a popular art. -

MONTY PYTHON at 50 , a Month-Long Season Celebra
Tuesday 16 July 2019, London. The BFI today announces full details of IT’S… MONTY PYTHON AT 50, a month-long season celebrating Monty Python – their roots, influences and subsequent work both as a group, and as individuals. The season, which takes place from 1 September – 1 October at BFI Southbank, forms part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the beloved comedy group, whose seminal series Monty Python’s Flying Circus first aired on 5th October 1969. The season will include all the Monty Python feature films; oddities and unseen curios from the depths of the BFI National Archive and from Michael Palin’s personal collection of super 8mm films; back-to-back screenings of the entire series of Monty Python’s Flying Circus in a unique big-screen outing; and screenings of post-Python TV (Fawlty Towers, Out of the Trees, Ripping Yarns) and films (Jabberwocky, A Fish Called Wanda, Time Bandits, Wind in the Willows and more). There will also be rare screenings of pre-Python shows At Last the 1948 Show and Do Not Adjust Your Set, both of which will be released on BFI DVD on Monday 16 September, and a free exhibition of Python-related material from the BFI National Archive and The Monty Python Archive, and a Python takeover in the BFI Shop. Reflecting on the legacy and approaching celebrations, the Pythons commented: “Python has survived because we live in an increasingly Pythonesque world. Extreme silliness seems more relevant now than it ever was.” IT’S… MONTY PYTHON AT 50 programmers Justin Johnson and Dick Fiddy said: “We are delighted to share what is undoubtedly one of the most absurd seasons ever presented by the BFI, but even more delighted that it has been put together with help from the Pythons themselves and marked with their golden stamp of silliness. -
JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies
JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Pacific Crossings: Remaking Bodies and Cultures Through Film Jane Chi Hyun Park University of Sydney Email: [email protected] Twitter: @jchihyunpark Keywords Diaspora Transnationalism Crossover Orientalism Hallyu Cultural Translation Hollywood Australian Film Masculinity Abstract This paper draws on scholarship from Inter-Asia and Asian diasporic cultural studies to look at two recent attempts by East Asian performers to appeal to Western audiences on the big screen, reading their crossover attempts as embodied forms of cultural and aesthetic translation. The first considers the ‘success’ of an Australian film, Mao’s Last Dancer, based on the life of a male Chinese diasporic ballet dancer, and the second, the ‘failure’ of two Hollywood films, Blood: The Last Vampire and Ninja Assassin which star Korean actors, Jeon Ji-hyun (Gianna Jun) and Jung Ji-hoon (Rain), Focusing on the ways in which these stars were produced and consumed transnationally, the paper questions the cultural, institutional and generic terms through which western films showcasing non- western bodies and themes are deemed to fail or succeed. It argues, ultimately, that a close examination of how certain narratives, genres, stars and performances are (mis)translated across different cultures demonstrates the continued existence of cultural and national differences in a supposedly swiftly globalizing world. Contributor Note Jane Chi Hyun Park is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies, University of Sydney and has published widely on the social uses of media technologies, the cultural impact of minority representations, and transnational flows of popular film, music, and television, with a particular focus on East Asia and Asian America. -

Movie Review
CRITICAL ANALYSIS The three movies taken up for this Analysis are as follows: A BEAUTIFUL MIND Written by: Akiva Goldsman Directed by: Ron Howard (English) ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST Written by: Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman Directed by: Milos Foreman (English) SURAJ KA SATVAN GHODA Written by: Dharamveer Bharati Directed by: Shyam Benegal (Hindi) PREMISE of the movie A beautiful Mind: Based loosely on a true story, A Beautiful Mind tells of a brilliant young mathematician named John Nash (Russell Crowe) who lived a life of genius tainted by mental breakdown. Married to his ever- faithful sweetheart Alicia (Jennifer Connelly) Nash lived a secret life as a Government agent, deciphering codes for the mysterious William Parcher (Ed Harris) in order to help the United States win the Cold War. The story begins in the early years of Nash's life at Princeton University as he develops his "original idea" that will revolutionize the world of mathematics. Early in the movie, Nash begins developing paranoid schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes while painfully watching the loss and burden his condition brings on his wife and friends. Suraj ka satvan ghoda: In this movie, the narrator, Manek Mullah (Rajit Kapur) tells three stories of the three women, Neena Gupta (the poor), Pallavi Joshi (the intellectual) and Rajeshwari Sachdev (middle class), he had met in his life at different times. These three stories are nothing but a single story seen from stands of different characters of the film. The lowest, slowest or the weakest in a group or society determines the speed or progress of the whole.
