Brave New World English and literacy teaching for the 21st century AATE & ALEA Joint National Conference QUT, Brisbane 4‐7 July, 2013 1 Welcome Welcome to Brisbane and QUT’s Kelvin Grove campus for the 2013 AATE/ALEA joint national conference, Brave New World: English and literacy teaching for the 21st century. After two years of separate events in NSW and Victoria, it is good to have the two national associations operating together again. The advent of a common national English curriculum for schooling up to Year 10 highlights the value of our cooperation. The introduction of the Australian Curriculum: English in various ways across the country is one of the things making it indeed a “brave new world” for English and literacy teaching in the nation’s schools and also for the teacher educators who train new entrants to the profession. In addition, the ongoing digital revolution continues to provide exciting challenges and opportunities for teachers at all levels. It often seems that continuing change is one of the few constants in education but we believe that there is a central core of understandings and beliefs that does remain relatively static. It is our hope that the conference will provide opportunities for delegates to reflect on things that should change and how they should change as well as those existing practices and approaches that should be retained. Associations like the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) and the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA) exist mainly to support their members via professional sharing. Such sharing is achieved by means of publications and face‐to‐face events such as this conference. Increasingly too, the capabilities of digital technologies are being harnessed to provide interaction between members. We modestly believe that the conference program should have something for everyone. The contributions of international and national speakers are supported by a wide range of workshops, papers and panel sessions. In addition, by the time the conference proper begins, some delegates will have benefitted from concentrated learning in the masterclasses conducted on the day prior. Events like this conference don’t just happen. We’d like to acknowledge all those who have helped make it happen: our speakers and session presenters, the volunteers who have laboured, often for several years, on the various committees, our various sponsors, the firms mounting trade displays, the ever helpful AATE and ALEA national offices, and, last but by no means least, all attendees for making the effort to attend. We hope you all derive value from the professional side of the conference and enjoy the associated social component. And we look forward to seeing many of you again in Darwin next year. Inside back cover 3 General Information Conference venue The conference is being held in multiple buildings on Kelvin Grove Campus. • Registration in F block • Trade displays in C block • Food and beverage in C block and the F block amphitheatre • Plenary and keynotes in F, W and N blocks • Concurrent sessions in F, W, N, B, R and A blocks • Computer labs in R block (the library) • Luggage storage in A block (A115) The map inside the back cover of this book provides further information. Access to buildings Kelvin Grove Campus is hilly. Every building has a small lift and/or a mobility access ramp, but these are not designed to carry large volumes of traffic. Please reserve the lifts and/or access ramps for those with mobility impairment or those carrying a large quantity of resources. Please note the following: • N block does not have a central staircase. • B block and N block have multiple sets of fire stairs to aid movement between levels. If one set of fire stairs appears to be very busy, search out other staircase options. • The entry level to a building may not necessarily be 'ground' or 'level 1'. As many of the buildings have front and back entries and therefore multiple 'ground' levels, careful attention needs to be paid to level numbers each time you enter a new building. Think of it as your daily brain training exercise and enjoy the challenge. Finding conference rooms The room numbering system is as follows: The letter is the building, the first number is the floor of the building, and the remaining numbers are the room number. Registration desk The conference registration desk is located on Level 5 of F Block and will be open at the following times: • Thursday 4 July, 8:30am‐6:30pm • Friday5 July, 8:00am‐3:30pm • Saturday 6 July, 8:00am‐3:30pm • Sunday 7 July, 8:00am‐12:30pm Conference volunteers Conference volunteers can be recognised by their burnt orange accessories. If you have any questions about the conference, they are the people to ask. 4 Special dietary requirements If you have advised the organisers of any special dietary requirement, this information has been forwarded to the catering staff, but is your responsibility to identify yourself to catering staff. Toilet facilities Kelvin Grove Campus has plenty of toilets, but they are located in small groups on just about every level of every building. Sometimes they are located in fairly obscure places. Seeking out toilet facilities on your way to and from sessions will alleviate long queues for the C and F block toilets during breaks. Any issues with QUT facilities should be reported to the registration desk. ATMs ATMs can be found at the following locations on or near the Kelvin Grove campus: • C Block, top floor, outside QUT bookshop (Redi ATM) • A Block, ground floor (Suncorp) • Kelvin Grove Urban Village, a short walk down Musk Ave (Commonwealth, ANZ, Westpac) Internet access You will be allocated a username and password to access the QUT network. This information will be located on your name badge and will give you access to computers on campus and to the wireless network. For any queries regarding access to the wireless network, please see staff at the registration desk. Mobile phones As a courtesy to fellow delegates and speakers, please ensure your phone is switched off or is on silent during all conference sessions. Lost property All lost property can be handed in/collected from the registration desk. Luggage storage If you require luggage storage at Kelvin Grove campus while you are attending conference events, please phone Margaret Burrowes on 0419 674 703. By doing this, you will be able to arrange a time to meet at the luggage room which is located in A block in Room A115.This room is under the main stair case on the ground level. Please note that Sunday will be particularly busy, so allow an extra 30 minutes for luggage drop‐ off and pick‐up, especially if you are requiring this service either side of the main keynotes. While due care and attention will be taken with your luggage, AATE and ALEA will not be responsible for any loss or damage to your luggage. Delegates are responsible for their own travel and luggage insurance. It is recommended that you do not leave any valuables or computer equipment with your luggage. Muslim prayer rooms On Kelvin Grove campus, Muslim prayer rooms are available for prayer and services: • Rooms B104 (Brothers) and B104(b) (Sisters) • Juma'a or Friday Prayer is held each Friday at 1:00pm in the Gymnasium, 44 Musk Avenue, Kelvin Grove (entrance opposite Subway).
