When I first started working on the new Raoul and The Big Time record HOLLYWOOD BLVD, which began in earnest shortly after the 2009 release of YOU MY PEOPLE, I looked for the opportunity to perform and record with many of the musicians I had met and admired over the years based on the West Coast of the US. One of those artists I met after an incredible Blowout in Southern . I witnessed a knock out harmonica and vocal performance from the legendary Curtis Salgado. Curtis Salgado was born in Everett Washington and started playing professionally in the late 1960s fronting his own group The Nighthawks which helped inspire to create . Later he was co-star of The Band, sang and toured with and released his first of eight solo albums in 1991, hitting the road hard year after year. Salgado and his band toured with The Band and Curtis spent a summer with Santana before being sidelined by a battle with cancer in 2006. He’s battled all the way back, and, after a full and complete recovery, has been tearing up concert stages all over the world. Most recently he was awarded 2013 for Entertainer of The Year and is among the most in demand blues artists in the world. I called Curtis at his home in Portland Oregon and asked him some questions prior to his trip to Ontario to perform with us on May 9th at Hugh’s Room and May 10th at Peter’s Players in Gravenhurst. RAOUL: Curtis can you tell me what first drew you to blues music, first as a fan and then a musician? CURTIS: I can’t remember but the first “blues” music I heard in particular but I guess the big recording for me was Bennie Goodman live at Carnegie Hall in 1938 with and Jimmy Rushing. I sat there and read those liner notes so many times. That was the blues for me. My father was a big fan of jazz music, as was my mother who was also a good stride piano player. My mother used to point out books, movies and music I should listen to, it was a kind of education. My older brother and sister were also influential because they brought home a lot of cool records. When I was 14 years old my brother brought home that first record. “Blues Piano Perfection” I remember the front cover, these white guys and a couple of black Cascade Blues Association guys together, of course they were Paul Butterfield, , Bloomfield and former Howlin’ Wolf band mates and Jerome David Vest - Roadhouse Revelation Arnold (brother of Billy Arnold). Plus the visitors to the hotel were thrilled to hear such high caliber music for free, no cover, pure magic. The place was packed and jumping every week. After two years there was a strike at the hotel. After the strike, management looked for a full time booking agent (and sound man, one job) and hired Mike Smith. Fortunately for them and for blues lovers, Mike made a smart and wise decision, he booked Jerome to play the first Monday of each month and Jack to play the last Friday of each month, the best of both worlds as Mike says and they both continue to pack the place. Mike then started to add other musical offerings with Blues, Jazz, Rock and Showcase nights. The jazz nights are in connection with JazzFM and have their own followers.
