Along the way, he has crafted his own trademark harmonica sound - a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack, combined with a strong sense of swing. Hummel has achieved wide recognition through nearly constant touring and appearances at the major blues festivals which have firmly established his solid reputation around the US, Canada and Europe. Born in New Haven, Connecticut and raised in Los Angeles, California, Mark absorbed the music of such Chicago based harp blowers as Little Walter, James Cotton, and Sonny Boy Williamson, before settling in Berkeley, California in 1972. There he played with local bluesmen such as Cool Papa, Boogie Jake, Mississippi Johnny Waters and Sonny Lane. In 1980, he took the helm to lead the popular Blues Survivors Band. In 1985, Mark Hummel & The Blues Survivors released Playing in Your Town, on Rockinitus Records, and immediately went out on the road. Earning their name, they toured virtually non-stop throughout the United States, Canada and Europe often playing alongside such blues greats as Charlie Musselwhite, Brownie McGhee, Lowell Fulson and Eddie Taylor. Mark's most current CD, Golden State Blues on the Electro Fi label, was recorded with his touring band, The Blues Survivors, plus special guests such as Rusty Zinn, Anson Funderburgh, Steve Lucky, and is receiving extended radio play at the moment. In 1988, Mark was introduced to Canadian guitarist and vocalist Sue Foley. After several tours that year, Mark and Sue released Up & Jumpin', which also features piano legend Charles Brown. Mark hit the road again in 1990, before releasing Hard Lovin' in 1992 on Double Trouble Records. He has been on the road constantly since then, stopping only to record Feel Like Rockin' in 1994 and Married to the Blues in 1995 on Flying Fish Records. Since 1991 Mark has been both producing and performing at his annual Blues Harmonica Blowout series. These shows have grown to be a much-heralded event and continue to draw sellout crowds wherever they appear. King, Van Morrison, Jonny Lang, Gary Moore, Double Trouble, Taj Mahal, Stephen Stilles, Jeff Healy, Jimmie Lee Robinson, Lowell Fulson, and Snooky Pryor, Kim Wilson, Pinetop Perkins, Johnny ‘Big Moose’ Walker, Johnnie Johnson, Kim Wilson, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Harry Hypolite, George ‘Wild Child’ Butler, David ‘HoneyBoy’ Edwards, Weepin’ Willie Robinson, Little Hatch, Nancy Bryan, Willie Kent, Henry Gray, Lazy Lester and Eomot RaSun.     EARLY BLUES BIBLIOGRAPHY In any selection of books the choice must inevitably be subjective as to what to include or exclude. This selection has ommitted some choices that other might have included. Also there are many articles, periodicals and magazines that provide information for the researcher that cannot be included here but are, perhaps, in Robert Ford's 'Blues Bibliography' or Edward Komara's '100 Books Every Blues Fan Should Have'. This selection is based very much on my own collection of books found in markets, second hand book shops but more recently through Amazon and the web site 'Abe Books' Many books are out of print, have reached the third, fourth or later edition but details are included here that will allow the collector to locate and purchase their own choice. I have not sought to comment on the accuracy, usefulness or expertise of each publication and care should be taken on choice of purchase as many are price inflated when a little more research will lead to better value for money. Where possible I have tended to provide details of hard cover books but many are also available in soft cover at a much reduced price. It should also be remembered that any list such as this is out of date the moment that it is produced. New books are regularly published. The University Presses of America provide a sound source of academic work under the general priciple of 'Publish or Perish' which reflects the wide range of books from the very simple history to the in depth difficult to read study of an aspect of my favourite genre of music - The Blues.

Holmstrom is currently the bandleader for the great Mavis Staples and can be heard on her Grammy-winning album “You Are Not Alone.” Holmstrom has numerous studio recordings to his credit with his groundbreaking third album “Hydraulic Groove” peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. Internationally acclaimed blues guitarist and Oceanside resident Nathan James is a well respected and experienced guitarist in his field, having created a musical identity with his handcrafted washboard guitar, mastery of the Piedmont finger style and passion for blues and American roots music. James has worked with such well known artists as Jamie Wood, Johnny Dyer, Kim Wilson, Pinetop Perkins, Janiva Magness, Rick Holmstrom, Mark Hummel, Gary Primich and blues veteran James Harman. With his trio, The Rhythm Scratchers, James forges a distinct sound that combines elements of 1920's acoustic blues, amplified juke joint hill country, and 1950's uptown blues mixed with 1960's soulful R&B.
