LORI HIGGINS I DETROIT FREE PRESS DETROIT—Andrew Shirvell, the assistant state attorney general under fire for his attacks on a University of Michigan student, has been fired. A hearing that was supposed to be held Tuesday was moved up to Monday afternoon. Philip Thomas, Shirvells attorney, said he showed up for the meeting and was read one sentence. “They said essentially that as a result of Andrews conduct, it’s become impossible for him to carry out his duties as an attorney general.” Shirvell had been criticized for his blog in which he calls Chris ON OCT. 27 strong winds blew over at least two trees in NMC Armstrong, the president of the Michigan Student Assembly, a radical parking lots. homosexual, a Nazi and Satan’s representative on the assembly. Thomas had said his client is expressing his free-speech rights. Thomas said the attorney general’s office left a message on his office voicemail Saturday morning, telling him the hearing had been moved to Monday afternoon. He didn’t get the message until Monday morning. Thomas said he is shocked and confused, saying he doesn’t know what could have happened between Friday afternoon, when the hearing began, and Saturday afternoon. A message was left with the attorney general’s office seeking comment. “This smells political to me,” Thomas said. He said Shirvell has received excellent performance reviews from his bosses, and that his employers knew of Shirvells off-work activities. “There’s been a tremendous piling on against Andrew. The liberal media started this tempest in a teapot.” “Andrew’s reaction is that he’s devastated over the loss of his employment,” Thomas said. Armstrong’s attorney, Deborah Gordon, issued a statement this afternoon in which she said the attorney general’s office made the correct decision. Gordon and Armstrong have filed complaints with the Michigan Grievance Commission, asking it to investigate Shirvell and possibly disbar him. TREE LIMBS FELL in both the Cherry and Aspen lots. Armstrong dropped a request for a personal protection order in Washtenaw court. The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s office declined to file a stalking charge against Shirvell, saying that while Shirvells comments “are offensive and mean spirited,” they don’t meet the definition of harassment under Michigan’s stalking statute. The University of Michigan also essentially lifted Shirvells ban from campus, allowing Shirvell on campus but requiring him to stay away from Armstrong. The firing was confirmed in a statement Monday afternoon from Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, who said Shirvell was fired for conduct unbecoming a state employee, especially that of an assistant attorney general. “To be clear, I refuse to fire anyone for exercising their First Amendment rights, regardless of how popular or unpopular their positions might be. However, Shirvell repeatedly violated office policies, engaged in borderline stalking behavior, and inappropriately used state resources, our investigation showed.”

Many Cheers to Val Handy for her tremendous contribution. Cheers to Edison Pena, who on Nov. 7 completed the New York City Marathon. Finishing any marathon is a feat in itself, but Pena managed to do so only a month after being pulled from a living hell. Pena was one of the 33 miners rescued from the mine that collapsed in Chile on Aug. 5. He had been staying in shape half a mile underground by running up and down the winding tunnel of the mine in 90-degree heat. Pena’s time was a cool 5 hours and 40 minutes—strong considering he was forced to limp part of the race after being hobbled by a bad knee. Pena says his next move is to start training for his next marathon. Pena had never run 26 miles in his life prior to entering the NYC Marathon. Cheers to Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox. In our last Cheers and Jeers, we jeered Andrew Shirvell, now a former employee of Cox, for his blatant and disrespectful ridicule of University of Michigan student body president Chris Armstrong for his sexual orientation. Shirvell “repeatedly violated office policies, engaged in borderline stalking behavior and inappropriately used state resources,” said Cox. Such behavior ultimately left the attorney general no other option but to fire Shirvell. The announcement came only weeks after Cox supported Shirvell in his use of the first amendment. Apparently everyone has a point beyond which loyalty is overcome by disgust. Cheers to Mike Cox for realizing this.

College students by nature look to the future. Their purpose for acquiring an education is to prepare themselves for the trials future endeavors will present whether they are local or elsewhere. But what if you’ve studied at NMC and wish to stay within the vicinity of Traverse City? Where do you look to acquire affordable housing that is suitable for your needs? Traverse City is often regarded as a place to retire, or perhaps start a family in a two-income household. What Traverse City is not known for is vast amounts of affordable housing. A typical apartment in the downtown region ranges from $700 a month to in excess of $900 a month and many times that does not include all or even some of the utilities. How is the average graduate, shiny Associates Degree in hand and thousands of dollars in student loans looming overhead, supposed to afford $900 plus utilities a month? Many cannot, especially when they are just starting out on the career ladder. This is a very prominent issue that many students will undoubtedly face. So what options does a recent graduate who wishes to stay in Traverse City area have? If you are lucky you might have parents who will let you live with them until you find suitable employment which will enable you to afford $900+ a month in living costs. Or you find a few friends and split the costs. But what about the person who just wants to be by themselves or cannot stand the idea of living with their parents any longer? Fortunately Downtown housing leaves few options for students, especially those with limited disposable with a little digging, help is available. There are a variety incomes. That includes all utilities and bonuses like cable T.V., Internet, and prefurnished living spaces. For the newly graduated college student this is ideal! Not only does the Whiting offer a prime location in the heart of downtown but also gives people the chance to save a load of cash on living expenses. This helps not only the individual but also the local economy. By not handing all of your hard earned dollars to the landlord, you are able to spend money elsewhere perhaps at the local Cherry Republic or any one of the many other stores that grace the region. The extra cash can also help recent graduates begin building a nest-egg for things like the down payment on a home. Having the ability to put money aside and save for the future is paramount in creating a stable future for yourself, and having affordable housing when you are starting out is the first step. The housing situation may be slightly intimidating to the newly graduated college student who is just starting out but there is hope! There are programs available that are designed to help those who have low incomes and are starting out on a career path.
