M&S: Swimwear Style for the sun since the 1930s 1920s & 1930s In 1928 we sold bathing suits and bathing caps. Customers shopping for their holidays at M&S in the 1930s would have seen our advertising leaflet for woollen swimsuits. The swimsuits were colour-fast to both sea and sun so were wearable, durable and fashionable. The first swimsuits were offered in a variety of styles to suit the wearer’s modesty: from ‘a regulation one piece... which essentially spells swimming’ to ‘a combined brassiere and shorts to give the utmost comfort and freedom’. Swimwear Marketing Leaflet, 1930s Ref: HO/11/1/5/27 1939 Swimwear available in 1939 included expanding swimsuits, and swimsuits with ripple stitch detail. In the late 1930s we sold knitting patterns for clothing, including swimsuits. Knitting Pattern, late 1930s 1950s After the Second World War, Chairman Simon Marks knew the M&S customer was demanding ‘better materials, better design, better finish…’ Scientific developments made during the war were used to fulfil customers’ needs. New fabrics such as rayon and nylon were widely used to provide people with easy-wear, easy-care garments, and were perfect for swimwear. Shape-enhancing features, such as padded busts were introduced and strapless styles became popular. For men, swimming trunks with elasticated waists were big sellers in the 1950s. The M&S stand at the 1962 Ideal Home Show sold as much swimwear in one day as an average store would sell in a week! The stand was St Michael News, Spring 1962 a joint venture between M&S and British Nylon Spinners to promote Bri-Nylon. -

Modelling diasystemic inflexion: Verb morphology in the Croissant linguistique Maximilien Guérin Louise Esher Jean Léo Léonard Sylvain Loiseau CNRS – LLACAN CNRS - CLLE-ERSS Université Montpellier 3 Université Paris 13 (UMR 8135) (UMR 5263) & Dipralang (EA 739) & LACITO (UMR 7107) 1 Introduction Our paper explores how tools developed for the formal modelling of individual inflexional systems may be fruitfully applied to the description of inflexion in a dialect continuum or DIASYSTEM. We take as our case study the area of central France termed the CROISSANT LINGUISTIQUE (literally, ‘Linguistic Crescent’; Tourtoulon & Bringuier 1876, Brun-Trigaud 1990), usually characterized as a transitional zone between northern Gallo-Romance (Oïl) varieties and southern Gallo-Romance (Occitan) varieties. For each of six survey points within the Croissant area, and a seventh, Occitan, survey point as a comparator, we analyse the inflexional morphology of the verb, using two principal formalizations: PARADIGM FUNCTION MORPHOLOGY (Stump 2001, 2016, Stump & Finkel 2013, Bonami & Stump 2016) and STEM SPACES (Bonami & Boyé 2002, 2003, 2014, Boyé 2011). By these means, we obtain schemas highlighting the key principles of paradigm organization in each individual variety. Comparison of the schemas reveals structural continuities and discontinuities within the Croissant dialect continuum itself, and between the Croissant dialect continuum and neighbouring varieties. 2 Data Seven localities, shown in Figure 1, were chosen to represent the study area: Dompierre-les- -

LANGUAGE VARIETY IN ENGLAND 1 ♦ Language Variety in England One thing that is important to very many English people is where they are from. For many of us, whatever happens to us in later life, and however much we move house or travel, the place where we grew up and spent our childhood and adolescence retains a special significance. Of course, this is not true of all of us. More often than in previous generations, families may move around the country, and there are increasing numbers of people who have had a nomadic childhood and are not really ‘from’ anywhere. But for a majority of English people, pride and interest in the area where they grew up is still a reality. The country is full of football supporters whose main concern is for the club of their childhood, even though they may now live hundreds of miles away. Local newspapers criss-cross the country in their thousands on their way to ‘exiles’ who have left their local areas. And at Christmas time the roads and railways are full of people returning to their native heath for the holiday period. Where we are from is thus an important part of our personal identity, and for many of us an important component of this local identity is the way we speak – our accent and dialect. Nearly all of us have regional features in the way we speak English, and are happy that this should be so, although of course there are upper-class people who have regionless accents, as well as people who for some reason wish to conceal their regional origins. -

In this regard he is contrasted with a second Workington man, of identical background, and their status as typical Workington speakex^s is established by means of a questionnaire. Attention is limited to diffex'ing phonetic realisations of the same vowel phonemes, noted impressionistically and supported by accompanying acoustic analysis. Exemplification is provided by a tape-recording of the same passage spoken by the two informants with a transcription of the passage showing linguistic innovation. -

Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context. -
