THE BULLETIN OF SOUTHWESTERN AT MEMPHIS A COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES FOUNDED IN 1848 CATALOGUE NUMBER April, 1989 Vol. 58, No. 2 SOUTHWESTERN AT MEMPHIS is a fully accredited four-year college of liberal arts and sciences. It is a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the official accrediting agency for the Southern States. SOUTHWESTERN is a member also of the Association of American Colleges, American Council on Education, Association of Urban Universities, College Entrance Examination Board, Southern University Conference, Presbyterian Educational Association of the South, and Tennessee College Association. The Music Department of SOUTHWESTERN is accredited by the Department of Education of the State of Ten- nessee and has full membership in the National Associa- tion of Schools of Music. SOUTHWESTERN is a corporate member of the Ameri- can Association of University Women and is one of the institutions cooperating in support of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Attendance at SOUTHWESTERN AT MEMPHIS, a privately endowed college, is a privilege which may be forfeited at any time by any student who refuses or fails to con- form to the regulations and standards of the college, or who is unwilling to adjust himself to the college tradi- tions and environment. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. ~ Aristotle Dear alumni, colleagues, friends, and patrons: It is my great pleasure to greet you as the Dean of the College of Music at the University of North Texas. My few months on the job here in Denton have both reinforced and refined the impressions I have acquired of this storied university from afar. Let me share what I’ve learned. This is a place of amazingly devoted and gifted faculty and staff. These col- leagues are kind, accomplished, appropriately demanding, inexplicably patient, and consistently supportive. It is a remarkable mix of virtues I expected to find, but frankly not in such abundance. This is a place of diverse, ambitious, competitive, gifted students of every music specialty who are certain to occupy leadership positions in the many professions they soon will join. This is a place of determined institutional leaders who understand the value of this celebrated College of Music and are eager to see it gain ever higher levels of accomplishment and acclaim. This is a place of bold imagination – a university poised to honor its distinguished 125-year history with fresh visions, grow- ing ambitions, and important accomplishments. It is a remarkable place. If ever there was a time to invoke the cliché of “standing on the shoulders of giants,” this occasion seems to me the right one, for I surely benefit from the leadership here of so many of America’s most accomplished music executives.

Smith Arkadelphia, AR November 22, 2004 Piano Pedagogy in Arkansas during the Twentieth Century Arkansas proudly stands beside larger states in offering quality piano instruction. Pianists from Arkansas have been successful on the national scene in performance as well as in teaching, and students from Arkansas have been accepted into well-respected music schools and into the studios of renowned teachers worldwide. Piano pedagogy in Arkansas is built upon a strong foundation of well-educated teachers who have raised the level of music education in the state. In a newspaper article printed by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazelle on June 23, 2004, the author found that piano instructors had changed over the last few decades: "The profession has become aggressively professionalized, shedding whatever remnants of amateurism that may have once clung to it."1 In actuality, piano pedagogy has been professionalized in Arkansas from the early twentieth century.
