Jamaican Architect Andre Baugh makes History and Firm wins UK’s Most prestigious Award : The Stirling Prize

Jamaican architect Andre Baugh, a graduate of the University College UCL and the Caribbean School of Architecture was a part of the historic archi- tecture team that managed to secure the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) most prestigious “Stirling Prize” award as featured on architecture.com and BBC. Over 700 hundred buildings were considered by the Royal Institute of British architects before a winner was selected for the Stirling Prize.

“The Sainsbury Laboratory was named best new building by the Royal Institute of Brit- ish Architects (RIBA) at a ceremony in . Judges praised the “calm beauty” of the winner, designed by Stanton Williams. It beat nominees including London’s Olym- pic Stadium and the Hepworth art gallery in , West Yorkshire. “ BBC

“The Stirling Prize is awarded to the best building constructed in the and designed in the UK. The Olympic Stadium was the most high-profile structure on the shortlist - but it missed out one year after the Olympic velodrome lost out on the same award. “ BBC

The architecture firm designed the Sainsbury Laboratory, an 11,000 sq.m. plant science research centre set in the University of ’s Botanic Garden, brings together world-leading scientists in a working environment of the highest quality. The design reconciles complex scientific requirements with the need for a work of architecture that also responds to its landscape setting and provides a collegial, stimulating environment for innovative research and collaboration. The building comprises laboratories, support areas, and meeting spaces, together with the University’s Herbarium, new public café and seminar room.

Central to the building’s identity is the way in which it is experienced as a sequence of spaces that are conceived in terms of their relationship with the surrounding Garden. The way in which the Laboratory’s different functions are connected by a continuous route recalls the ‘thinking path’ described by Charles Darwin (whose mentor, John Henslow, oversaw the laying out of the Botanic Garden), a way to reconcile nature and thought through the activity of walking.

Andre Baugh graduated from the Caribbean School of Architecture in 2002. He achieved a Master of Architecture with Distinction in Architectural Design and first and only recipient of the M.Arch prize under the direction ofSirPe- ter Cook- Bartlett School of Architecture , University College London 2002-2003 .
