Biography

Richard Rogers is the 2007 Pritzker Prize Laureate, the recipient of the RIBA Gold Medal in 1985 and winner of the 1999 Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Medal. He is also winner of the 2000 Praemium Imperiale Prize for Architecture, the 2006 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement (La Biennale di Venezia) and the 2007 Tau Sigma Delta Gold Medal. was awarded the Légion d’Honneur in 1986, knighted in 1991 and made a life peer in 1996. Most recently, in 2008 he was made a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour. In 1995, he was the first architect ever invited to give the BBC Reith Lectures – a series entitled ‘Cities for a Small Planet’ – and in 1998 was appointed by the Deputy Prime Minister to chair the UK Government’s Urban Task Force on the state of our cities. He was Chief Advisor on Architecture and Urbanism to the Mayor of , Ken Livingstone and has played an advisory role on design to the current Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. He has also been an Advisor to the Mayor of Barcelona’s Urban Strategies Council. Richard Rogers has served as Chairman of the Tate Gallery and Deputy Chairman of the Arts Council of Great Britain. He is currently an Honorary Trustee of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Trustee of Médicins du Monde and President of The National Communities Resource Centre. Richard Rogers’ practice - Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners - was founded in 1977 as Richard Rogers Partnership and has offices in London, and Tokyo. It is best known for such pioneering buildings as the Centre Pompidou, the headquarters for Lloyd’s of London, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and the Millennium Dome in London. The practice has worked – or is currently working – on a wide range of projects including: Maggie’s Centre in London, winner of the 2009 ; Terminal 4 at Madrid Barajas Airport, winner of the 2006 Stirling Prize; Terminal 5 at London’s Heathrow Airport; two underground stations in Naples; the Leadenhall Building in the ; Riverside South, a major office development in Canary Wharf, East London; Tower 3 on the World Trade Center site in New York; mixed-use developments in and Florence; major residential developments in London and Taipei; the Oxley Woods housing scheme in Milton Keynes; Bodegas Protos, a winery in Spain; and a new exhibitions and conservation centre for the in London. The practice has a wealth of experience in urban masterplanning with major schemes in London, , Berlin, New York, and Shanghai Pudong. It is participating in the Greater project, which looks at the future of the city as a more integrated metropolitan region as it faces the social and environmental challenges of the 21st century. Summary of Experience

Graham Stirk joined the practice in 1983, was made a director in 1988 and a senior director in 1995. He has been involved in the design of a number of prestigious UK and worldwide projects often on complex sites. In 2007 the name of the practice was changed in recognition of his and ’s contributions. Graham – together with Ivan and Richard Rogers – drives the design direction of the practice and is evolving the practice’s language of design, to create sustainable and thought-provoking architecture for the future. His intellectually rigorous approach to the analysis and interpretation of a client brief and site informs the process and form of architecture to create functional, flexible and elegant buildings and spaces Graham has brought innovative, rational and clear design leadership to many of the practice’s high profile projects including: an expansion to the Lloyd’s Register Headquarters in London; 88 Wood Street, a speculative office development in the City of London; Bodegas Protos,a winery in Peñafiel, Spain (all shortlisted for the Stirling Prize – 2000, 2001 and 2009 respectively); a 48-storey office tower – the Leadenhall Building – in the City of London; NEO , 229 residential units in London, next to Tate Modern; One Hyde Park, a new high-end residential development in Knightsbridge; (both currently under construction) and an extension for The British Museum to provide a flexible series of exhibition and conservation spaces which will support a wide range of Museum activities, due to open in 2013. In addition, Graham has contributed to the design of several key masterplanning projects including Potsdamer Platz, Berlin and Paddington Basin, London.

Summary of Experience

Ivan joined the practice in 1985. He cut his teeth on Lloyd’s of London and subsequently led the design of the European Court of Human Rights and Bordeaux Law Courts. He was made a director in 1993 and senior director in 1998. In 2007 the name of the practice was changed from Richard Rogers Partnership in recognition of Ivan and Graham Stirk’s contribution. Together with Richard, they are evolving the design- led practice for the future. Ivan has considerable experience of directing complex projects both large and small and of many different types. Each is a unique response born out of a pursuit of the best and a thorough questioning of design proposals based on a language of: context, public realm, legibility, flexibility, sustainability and teamwork. Projects designed and realised under Ivan’s supervision include: Barangaroo masterplan, Sydney; Maggie’s Centre at Charing Cross Hospital, London, winner of the 2009 Stirling Prize; 300 New Jersey Avenue offices, Washington DC; Parc1, a mixed-use development in Seoul; Oxley Woods, sustainable and affordable housing in Milton Keynes, UK; Terminal 4 Barajas Airport Madrid, winner of the 2006 Stirling Prize; National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff, Wales; Law Courts in ; and Minami Yamashiro School, Kyoto, Japan.
