WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS CANOE MARATHON JUNIORS – UNDER 23 – SENIORS

The Spanish Canoe Federation has pleasure in inviting your Federation to be represented at the Marathon World Championships, for Juniors, Under 23 and Seniors to be held from 23th – 26th September 2010 in Banyoles, according to the ICF Official Calendar.

The City of Banyoles

Banyoles is situated half-way between the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees, and it is surrounded by zones of great historic and natural interest. Banyoles is located at 20 km from Girona and 120 km from Barcelona. The long history of Banyoles is reflected in its many monuments: the Plaça Major (thirteenth century), Santa Maria dels Turers (thirteenth century), Pia Almoina (fourteenth century), Llotja del Tint (fifteenth century) and the Monastery of Sant Esteve (various centuries). The Pia Almoina houses the Regional Archaelogic Museus, which contains important pre-history, archaeological and palaentologic exhibits. The Lake of Banyoles, together with surrounding satellite lagoons forms a unique natural zone which is internationally recognized. All the beauty of this natural landscape can be watched in Banyoles: the Joan de Palau lookout point situated in Puig d’en Colomer and the lookout point in Puig Sant Martirià. Throughout the year it is possible to enjoy many public entertainment and fairs, some of which go far back in tie and are steeped in tradition, whereas others are of a more recent conception. From among the public celebrations, the most important is the “Festa Major” celebrated in October in honour of Sant Martirià. The “Festes de la Mare de Déu” celebrated in August, is also a most important occasion. Other traditional public celebrations include: “Sant Antoni Abat”, Carnival, the procession of “Dolors” held the week before Easter and the Sardana dance popular gathering. From among the fairs, the most important is the Sant Martirià Fair (November) livestock fair, a multisectorial trade fair, a drawing and painting fair and a craftwork market. The other fairs of more recent conception to be held in Banyoles include: “la fira del Cop d’Ull” (antiques and collector’s items), a flower exposition and the voice festival (a)phonica. In addition, from the thirteenth century, the market is held every Wednesday in the Plaça Major and its surroundings.

The lake of Banyoles

The lake of Banyoles represents an area of 107 hectares, has a length of 2100 meters, 775 meters in its widest point and a exceeding depth in some points of 40 meters. Its special characteristic is that it has an eight shaped form. The lacustrine basin of Banyoles receives most of its water from subterranean upwellings originating in the limestone mountains of Upper Garrotxa. When the subterranean water finally reaches Banyoles it has to contend with a change from permeable rock to impermeable rock, which results in the water being forced upwards thus creating increasingly lager subterranean cavities until the ceiling finally gives way and the water gushes forth to the outside. The lake of Banyoles is a natural protected space with a high ecological value. The lake, together with the small nearby lagoons, represent the most important carstic lacustrine system of the country and its scientifc significance is recognised throughout the world. This natural space has been included in the plan for Sapcs of Natural Interest (PEIN) by the Generalitat of Catalonia, not only forming part of the 2000 Nature Network and but also being included in the list of internationally important wetland areas. Due to the integration to the lake with those enviromental projects, the uses that people can do in the lake are restricted, being the practise of rowing a sport permitted because of its low environmental impacts. In order to respect to the maximum the lake, the natural grandstand and the arrival area has been made with natural products and in accordance with the wonderful scene.

By car from France

Take the A-7 motorway (Barcelona to France) and exit at junction no. 6. Then take the C-66 dual carriageway, which takes you straight to Banyoles (13 km). Another option is to take the N-II, which connects with the C-66 in Sant Julià de Ramis.

2. Date

The World Championship Canoe Marathon 2010 will have a 4,3 kilometers lap. The start, finish line and portage will be near the Club Natació Banyoles as seen in the picture below.

9. Participation Fee

You must pay a participation fee of 55,00€ per person, which includes the following: Acreditation Transportation: the transfers from and to the airport (Girona or Barcelona) are included. Medical Care at the Course Participation in the Opening Ceremony Security Service at the Course Access pass and parking for one trailer in the venue and accredited vehicles outside the venue Organisation Fee Mineral Water during competition days

10. Conditions of Payment

The payment for all the concepts (booking, transfer, and participation fee) must be paid as follow: 1st deposit 60% payment in order to confirm the reservation on 15th May 2010. 2nd deposit 40% payment should be made on 9th August 2010.

11. Boat Transportation

The countries, which are not members of the European Union, are kindly requested to contact their Chamber of Commerce or Custom Office to obtain the accurate information regarding the documents necessary for the boat transportation.

12. Visa

Participants from countries, for which the possession of a Visa is required, upon request, will receive a confirmation letter from the Spanish Canoe Federation, once their participation is confirmed. 13. Insurance

All participants are strongly advised to have appropriate medical insurance from their respective countries.

14. Medical Services

A First Aid and Emergency Medical Service will be available at Banyoles lake, from 22th to 26th of September 2010 to everyone requiring medical assistance. A Hospital in 1 km will be on stand by cover the needs during the event.

15. Boat Rental

The countries that wish to rent a boat must send an appropriate form to the Organising Committee , who will directly take care of these necessities through the manufacturers.
