ICF CANOE MARATHON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 1 St Bulletin ICF CANOE MARATHON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS JUNIORS – UNDER 23 – SENIORS 23 – 26 SEPTEMBER 2010 1 st Bulletin March 2010 Banyoles – Catalonia -Spain WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS CANOE MARATHON JUNIORS – UNDER 23 – SENIORS The Spanish Canoe Federation has pleasure in inviting your Federation to be represented at the Marathon World Championships, for Juniors, Under 23 and Seniors to be held from 23th – 26th September 2010 in Banyoles, according to the ICF Official Calendar. The City of Banyoles Banyoles is situated half-way between the Costa Brava and the Pyrenees, and it is surrounded by zones of great historic and natural interest. Banyoles is located at 20 km from Girona and 120 km from Barcelona. The long history of Banyoles is reflected in its many monuments: the Plaça Major (thirteenth century), Santa Maria dels Turers (thirteenth century), Pia Almoina (fourteenth century), Llotja del Tint (fifteenth century) and the Monastery of Sant Esteve (various centuries). The Pia Almoina houses the Regional Archaelogic Museus, which contains important pre-history, archaeological and palaentologic exhibits. The Lake of Banyoles, together with surrounding satellite lagoons forms a unique natural zone which is internationally recognized. All the beauty of this natural landscape can be watched in Banyoles: the Joan de Palau lookout point situated in Puig d’en Colomer and the lookout point in Puig Sant Martirià. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS CANOE MARATHON JUNIORS – UNDER 23 – SENIORS Throughout the year it is possible to enjoy many public entertainment and fairs, some of which go far back in tie and are steeped in tradition, whereas others are of a more recent conception. From among the public celebrations, the most important is the “Festa Major” celebrated in October in honour of Sant Martirià. The “Festes de la Mare de Déu” celebrated in August, is also a most important occasion. Other traditional public celebrations include: “Sant Antoni Abat”, Carnival, the procession of “Dolors” held the week before Easter and the Sardana dance popular gathering. From among the fairs, the most important is the Sant Martirià Fair (November) livestock fair, a multisectorial trade fair, a drawing and painting fair and a craftwork market. The other fairs of more recent conception to be held in Banyoles include: “la fira del Cop d’Ull” (antiques and collector’s items), a flower exposition and the voice festival (a)phonica. In addition, from the thirteenth century, the market is held every Wednesday in the Plaça Major and its surroundings. The lake of Banyoles The lake of Banyoles represents an area of 107 hectares, has a length of 2100 meters, 775 meters in its widest point and a exceeding depth in some points of 40 meters. Its special characteristic is that it has an eight shaped form. The lacustrine basin of Banyoles receives most of its water from subterranean upwellings originating in the limestone mountains of Upper Garrotxa. When the subterranean water finally reaches Banyoles it has to contend with a change from permeable rock to impermeable rock, which results in the water being forced upwards thus creating increasingly lager subterranean cavities until the ceiling finally gives way and the water gushes forth to the outside. The lake of Banyoles is a natural protected space with a high ecological value. The lake, together with the small nearby lagoons, represent the most important carstic lacustrine system of the country and its scientifc significance is recognised throughout the world. This natural space has been included in the plan for Sapcs of Natural Interest (PEIN) by the Generalitat of Catalonia, not only forming part of the 2000 Nature Network and but also being included in the list of internationally important wetland areas. Due to the integration to the lake with those enviromental projects, the uses that people can do in the lake are restricted, being the practise of rowing a sport permitted because of its low environmental impacts. In order to respect to the maximum the lake, the natural grandstand and the arrival area has been made with natural products and in accordance with the wonderful scene. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS CANOE MARATHON JUNIORS – UNDER 23 – SENIORS 1. Transport and Access By car from France Take the A-7 motorway (Barcelona to France) and exit at junction no. 6. Then take the C-66 dual carriageway, which takes you straight to Banyoles (13 km). Another option is to take the N-II, which connects with the C-66 in Sant Julià de Ramis. Airports 1) Girona-Costa Brava Airport is located at 25 kilometers from Banyoles. This airport is connected with main European cities and the aerial company is a low cost company: Austria: Graz, Linz. Belgium: Bruselas. Denmark: Aarhus, Billund, Copenague. France: París. The Course The World Championship Canoe Marathon 2010 will have a 4,3 kilometers lap. The start, finish line and portage will be near the Club Natació Banyoles as seen in the picture below. Furthermore, this article aims to analyse how to design and implement long-term public policies in place branding. The Pla de l’Estany district is one of the smallest in Catalonia and had its moment of splendour during the Barcelona Olympic Games, which positioned it as a place of natural beauty and sports tourism. However, twenty-five years later, we ask whether this positioning needs to be updated. This research deploys a methodological triangulation that combines in-depth interviews with opinion leaders, discussions in focus groups and an online survey open to citizens. This research presents three conclusions: it places the processes of citizen participation as a key element in the construction of territorial brands; refocuses the narrative of the territory of the Pla de l’Estany based on the concepts of “sustainable nature” and “traditional culture”; and conceptualises place branding not just from the perspective of promoting tourism, but also from that of fomenting sustainable governance.

    A CASE STUDY OF OLYMPIC, WORLD AND COMMONWEALTH SCULLING CHAMPION PETER ANTONIE A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PART FULFILMENT OF THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS, SPORTS HUMANITIES/MEDIA, DIVISION OF HEALTH, DESIGN AND SCIENCE, UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA ROBIN POKE AUGUST 2006 ii Abstract This thesis is a biographical case study of Olympic, World and Commonwealth sculling champion Peter Antonie, whose career at the elite or high performance level spanned some 23 years – from 1977 to 2000. The thesis examines the exploits of an oarsman and sculler regarded within his sport as one of Australia’s greatest ever, despite his being considered physically disadvantaged at every phase of his career. Antonie was, most notably, a man of small stature – widely considered a handicap at the level of rowing to which he aspired, and at which he ultimately succeeded. The study also examines what it was, despite those perceived disadvantages, that drove him to excel. The thesis further examines, in thematic form, parallel developments within Australian rowing and sculling in the quarter of a century in which Peter Antonie competed. This was a period during which fundamental changes were seen in Australian sport, notably in the areas of funding and administration, and which saw a transformation from amateur to professional participation at the Olympic, Commonwealth Games and world championships levels. There were also marked changes to high performance rowing as a result of technological advances that produced new types of equipment, and scientific developments that brought new training and selection methodologies. The research was carried out as part of a systematic attempt to examine and investigate Peter Antonie’s reputation, particularly as it compares with his better- known contemporaries, the so-called Oarsome Foursome, and to analyse that reputation in light of the administrative developments in Australian rowing and Australian sport.

The issue is that people were always selling things, having started with medieval barter and ended up with the genius infrastructure of modern trade. Marketing has been developing since 1450, when the first printed advertisement appeared. With time marketing went through the radio, TV and telephone. The the digital age presented us Internet, social media and e-commerce which nowadays help to the consumer pay attention on the variety of proposed goods. Plenty of private companies in tourism need marketing in order to improve their image, attractiveness, reputation and selling proposition. It is obviously, that with time marketers “changed the game”, because in tourism all internal and external factors affect a lot the process of management of the enterprise activities, its marketing and profitability.
