Mueller's(1859) generic description stated that L barryanumwas five-merous,rarely having six stamensand sepals,and Bentham (1863) elroneously described L rugosumas five-merous. Type specimensandothercollections ofthese original species ofly siosepalumarc,however,all six-merous. Confusionwas still apparentwhen Moore (1921) described a third new speciesThomasir hexandra Moore,the epithet referring to thesix-merous flowers. When he later examined Lysiosepalumheldat BM andAustralian herbaria (unnamed), he foundthem to behexamerous and subsequently transferred the taxon to trysiosepalum (Moore in Sargent1923). This species,although currently not recognized (Hnatiuk1990), having previously been reduced to synonymyof L. involunotum(Blackall & Grieve 1956),is reinstatedhere as a distinctspecies. Of thetwo additionalspecies described in thisrevision, oneis 6-merousand the other is 4- or 5-merous. "Flora As therehas beenno comprehensiveteatment of Lysiosepalumsince Australiensis" (Bentham1863), this paperpresents aformal revisionofthe genus as part ofarevision ofLasiopetaleae "Flora in preparationfor of Australia"Volume 7. In addition,a lack of publishedinformation on anatomy,cytology and phylogeny of thegenus is redressed. Methods This revisionis basedprimarily upon morphologicalevidence obtained from examinationof vegetative,and fresh and rehydrated flowering material from collections,including type specimens' from thefollowing national and intemational herbaria; AD, BM, BRI, CANB, CBG,DNA, K, MEL, NSW,P, PERTH,W. All definedtaxa have been examined in thefield. Seed-coatmorphology was examined on seeds from the authors' fieldcollections, orthose ofKings ParkBotanic Garden (KPBG). Examination ofpollen exotesta ofl,lsio sepaluminvolucratun(KPBG 196/86,identity verified from seedlings)was facilitatedby an EnvironmentalScanning Electron Microscope(Danilatsos 1993). Seedlingswere grown of L. hexandrum(C.F. Wilkins 737), L. involucratum(KPBG 196/86) and L rugosum(C.F,WilkinsT32). Seeds were pre-treated by being coveredwith boiling water and soaked ovemight. Seeds were germinated in petridishes on filter paper noistenedwith 17oPrevicur fungicide and those with emergentradicles were transferred to potsof pottingmix in a glasshouse. Anatomyand cytology.Anatomical comparisonof fresh plant material was facilitated by fixing in glutaraldehyde,embedding in GMA resin,sectioning by microtomeand staining with ToluidineBlue pH 4.4 (Feder& O'Brien 1968).To observechromosome number, fresh anthers were fixed in 3:1 absoluteethanol: glacial acetic acid for 24 hours,rinsed in 707oethanol and stainedin alcoholic hyrlrochloric acid carmine for two days. Anthers were squashedin 45Vo glac\al acetic acid and chromosomesfrommeiotic pollen mother cells were micrographed using aZeiss Axiophotmicroscope and6 ASA Imagelinkfilm. Cladisticanalysis. A dataset offive identifiedspecies of I-ysiosepalum, two o\tgrouptaxa and 25 morphologicalcharacters was establishedin MacClade 3.05 (Maddison &Maddison 1992). Thomqsia angustifuliaSteud. and Guichenotia angustifolia (Turcz.) Druce were chosen as outgroup taxa as a cladisticanalysis of all speciesof Lasiopetaleae(unpublished data) shows Lysiosepalum to be monophyleticand Guichenotia and, Thonasia to be closelyrelated with similarstipules, and anthers dehiscencingby apicalpores. Most are herbaceous annuals or perennials • Pelargoniums (the so-called garden geraniums or storksbills) have asymmetrical flowers and range from perennials to succulents to shrubs The weedy filaree, Erodium cicutarium, produces small pink-purple flowers in California’s spring grasslands Here are the beaked unripe fruits of filaree Many of the perennial erodiums from the Mediterranean make well-behaved ground covers for California gardens Here are the flowers of the charming E.

It's certainly been a while since the last one. I haven't answered many (or any) letters in that time either. The .."... reason is basically that my wife passed away at the start of the year. I now have two sons (& myself) to look after and I just don't get the time for native plants. I also found native plants were a refuge during my wife's illness. Now I have lost my interest in the plants and I feel a break of a year or two will do me good. Of course I'll keep my garden going (albeit full of weed;) .I'll also k&ep interesting planis growing (given to me now 'that I no longer propagate them) so. -please call in if anyone is passing through. ,' ... I . I will keep the study group going, however I am running out of + material. I am trying to cover the Rulingeas and Thomasias. This will take t while. I am collecting material and information at present (thanks mainly tc \ Gwenda McDonald and Dennis Margan). .I I have had visits by Dennis Margan, Bruce and Thelma Wallace and ' Ian Evans. Dennis seems to regularly travel up and down the coast. I'm not sure if he's looking for Goodenias or it's actually part of his work. - (Dennis psobably doesn't know the difference). Bruce and Thelma called in after a visit to Burrendong Arboretum.

    FINAL REPORT 2019 Canna Reserve This project was supported by NACC NRM and the Shire of Morawa through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program Canna Reserve BioBlitz 2019 Weaving and wonder in the wilderness! The weather may have been hot and dry, but that didn’t stop everyone having fun and learning about the rich biodiversity and conservation value of the wonderful Canna Reserve during the highly successful 2019 BioBlitz. On the 14 - 15 September 2019, NACC NRM together with support from Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions and the Shire of Morawa, hosted their third BioBlitz at the Canna Reserve in the Shire of Morawa. Fifty professional biologists and citizen scientists attended the event with people travelling from near and far including Morawa, Perenjori, Geraldton and Perth. After an introduction and Acknowledgement of Country from organisers Jessica Stingemore and Jarna Kendle, the BioBlitz kicked off with participants separating into four teams and heading out to explore Canna Reserve with the goal of identifying as many plants, birds, invertebrates, and vertebrates as possible in a 24 hr period. David Knowles of Spineless Wonders led the invertebrate survey with assistance from, OAM recipient Allen Sundholm, Jenny Borger of Jenny Borger Botanical Consultancy led the plant team, BirdLife Midwest member Alice Bishop guided the bird survey team and David Pongracz from Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions ran the vertebrate surveys with assistance from volunteer Corin Desmond. The BioBlitz got off to a great start identifying 80 plant species during the first survey with many more species to come and even a new orchid find for the reserve.

Dioecy is a rare breeding system among the angiosperms (approximately 6% of all flowering plants) while hermaphroditism (having male and female function present within each flower) is predominant. Dioecious angiosperms may be rare because the transitions to dioecy have been recent or because dioecious angiosperms experience decreased diversification rates (speciation minus extinction) compared to plants with other breeding systems.

    Distribution of flavonoids among Malvaceae family members – A review Vellingiri Vadivel, Sridharan Sriram, Pemaiah Brindha Centre for Advanced Research in Indian System of Medicine (CARISM), SASTRA University, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India Abstract Since ancient times, Malvaceae family plant members are distributed worldwide and have been used as a folk remedy for the treatment of skin diseases, as an antifertility agent, antiseptic, and carminative. Some compounds isolated from Malvaceae members such as flavonoids, phenolic acids, and polysaccharides are considered responsible for these activities. Although the flavonoid profiles of several Malvaceae family members are REVIEW REVIEW ARTICLE investigated, the information is scattered. To understand the chemical variability and chemotaxonomic relationship among Malvaceae family members summation of their phytochemical nature is essential. Hence, this review aims to summarize the distribution of flavonoids in species of genera namely Abelmoschus, Abroma, Abutilon, Bombax, Duboscia, Gossypium, Hibiscus, Helicteres, Herissantia, Kitaibelia, Lavatera, Malva, Pavonia, Sida, Theobroma, and Thespesia, Urena, In general, flavonols are represented by glycosides of quercetin, kaempferol, myricetin, herbacetin, gossypetin, and hibiscetin. However, flavonols and flavones with additional OH groups at the C-8 A ring and/or the C-5′ B ring positions are characteristic of this family, demonstrating chemotaxonomic significance. Name Lasiopetalum sp. Proston (J.A.Baker 17) The species is commonly known as the Proston Lasiopetalum. It is in the family Sterculiaceae. 2. Reason for Conservation Assessment by the Committee This advice follows assessment of information provided by a public nomination to list the Proston Lasiopetalum. The nominator suggested listing in the critically endangered category of the list. The Committee provides the following assessment of the appropriateness of the species’ inclusion in the EPBC Act list of threatened species. This is the Committee’s first consideration of the species for listing under the EPBC Act. 3. Summary of Conclusion The Committee judges that the species has been demonstrated to have met sufficient elements of Criterion 1 to make it eligible for listing as endangered. The vegetation of Booti Booti National Park and Yahoo Nature Reserve on the lower North Coast of New South Wales has been classified and mapped from aerial photography at a scale of 1: 25 000. The plant communities so identified are described in terms of their composition and distribution within Booti Booti NP and Yahoo NR. The plant communities are also discussed in terms of their distribution elsewhere in south-eastern Australia, with particular emphasis given to the NSW North Coast where compatible vegetation mapping has been undertaken in many additional areas. Floristic relationships are also examined by numerical analysis of full-floristics and foliage cover data for 48 sites. A comprehensive list of vascular plant taxa is presented, and significant taxa are discussed. Management issues relating to the vegetation of the reserves are outlined.
