APPOINTMENT OF THE GENERAL CHAIRMAN OF THE TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONS TO BE HELD AT THE FORTY-FIRST WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY (1988) 1. In application of paragraph (6) of resolution WHA10.33,^ the President of the Fortieth World Health Assembly has addressed to the Chairman of the Executive Board a communication in which he nominates Dame Nita Barrow as General Chairman of the Technical Discussions to be held at the Forty-first World Health Assembly. The text of this communication and a brief personal history of Dame Nita Barrow are annexed to this document. 2. It will be recalled that, at its seventy-eighth session, the Executive Board selected "Leadership development for health for all" as the subject for the 1988 Technical Discussions.2 3. Served as the Principal Nursing Officer, Government of Jamaica, with responsibilities for all nursing services, and as adviser to the Minister of Health on health administration and nursing education (1956-1963). During this period, promoted the integration of family planning within maternal and child health care programmes; developed and applied the methodology of health planning. International PAH0/WH0 Nursing Adviser to 13 Commonwealth Caribbean Government:s (1963-1972). ———“ ""一 In this capacity: - undertook surveys of nursing education and utilization in these 13 countries; - initiated the establishment of training programmes for nursing auxiliaries and of family-centred nursing care services and education programmes; played a leading role in the development of advanced nursing education programmes for administrators and tutors and in the establishment of the Regional Nursing Body for the Commonwealth Caribbean. AWARDS AND HONOURS Received the title Dame of St Andrew (bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II, 1980). Nominated Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, England (1982). Awarded Doctor of Science (Hon.) by McMaster University, Ontario, Canada, and Doctor of Laws (Hon.) by the University of the West Indies (1982). NOTEWORTHY - A prominent and dynamic leader at national and international levels in ACCOMPLISHMENTS the development of nursing services and reorientation of nursing education towards the community; -has played a significant role at international level in the development of public health and nursing policies, and has promoted the recognition of the expanded role of the nursing profession in attaining the goal of Health for All; - a mobilizer of people and communities; has been in the forefront of debates on the involvement of people in the planning and execution of health activities at grassroots level; - a spokeswoman in several international fora on health issues, in particular those concerned with the health and wellbeing of the underprivileged; - a recognized international leader and promoter of equity, human rights and the participation of women in health and development; 一 as one of the seven members of the Commonwealth Eminent Persons Group on South Africa, has held a prominent negotiating role in the debates on apartheid.
