Su carrera política comenzó en 1958 cuando fue uno de los candidatos del Partido Laboral de Barbados, en esa oportunidad ganaron cuatro de los cinco escaños de la Cámara de Representantes del Parlamento Federal de Barbados. Colegio Harrison. Entre 1976 y 1984 Deighton Ward ocupó el cargo de Gobernador General. Fue nombrado Caballero de la Grand Cross de la Orden Real Victoriana y también fue Caballero de Saint Michael y Saint George. SIR HUGH SPRINGER Período de mandato: 1984 - 1990 Estudió leyes en el Inner Temple, en London. En lo que respecta a su carrera política, fue reconocido como un excelente administrador. Fue el primer Secretario General de la Unión de trabajadores de Barbados entre 1940 a 1947. Ese año se fue de Barbados para ocupar el cargo de Secretario de universidad de West Indies en Jamaica. Tuvo una larga carrera como profesional: Fue miembro de la Cámara de la Asamblea. Secretario General del Partido Laboral. Gobernador Interino. Sir Hugh Springer. Comandante en Jefe de Barbados. En 1947 renunció de la Liga y asumió funciones como Secretario de la Universidad de West Indies en Jamaica. DAME NITA BARROW Período de mandato: 1990 - 1995 Nació el 15 de noviembre de 1916. Fue enfermera y activista humanitaria de Barba- dos. Ocupó el cargo d Gobernadora General desde el 6 de junio de 1990 hasta el 19 de diciembre de 1995 (fecha de su muerte). Entre los años 1940 y 1950 se capacitó como enfermera, partera y como administradora de atención de salud. En esa década también se desempeñó en varios cargos relacio- nados a su carrera. The Visitorship recognizes the remarkable contributions of Dame Nita Barrow, former Governor-General of Barbados and graduate of the University of Toronto. The Distinguished Visitorship creates an opportunity for a woman from the “majority world” to be in residence at the University for six months each year working in the Centre for Women’s Studies in Education and the Department of Adult Education, Community Development and Counselling Psychology. Each visitor offers a course that calls on her particular area of interest and experience, dealing with the current issues of women in development, and community transformation in a global context and from a Southern perspective.

I am very honoured and humbled to deliver the inaugural lecture of the Dame Nita Barrow Women In Development and Community Transformation Visitorship. On behalf of the University of The West Indies and the Centre for Gender and Development Studies I take this opportunity to congratulate OISE and the University of Toronto for establishing this Visitorship to honour the memory of Dame Nita. I hope our policy makers have noted your initiative and are in fact working on a significant and relevant means of honouring the regional and international public service of this remarkable, outstanding woman. I anticipate and look forward to this. Are Caribbean Women Taking Over? Let me say by Caribbean I refer to the countries of the Anglophone, Commonwealth Caribbean which share a similar historical, cultural, political and economic legacy even though there are varying expressions of that legacy within this grouping. With the topic of my lecture, "Are Caribbean Women Taking Over? Contradictions for Women in Caribbean Society” I draw your attention to the changing nature of gender relations in the Caribbean and what these changes mean for women. Sharp, polarized divisions now exist in the ways in which Caribbean people interpret these evolving relations.
