Acknowledgements The funny thing about acknowledgements is that in it we generally try to single out special people. But, particularly in the case of this thesis, which tries to build bridges with alterity and even starts questioning the very possibility of separation and distance, I wonder if it makes sense to single people out. There truly are so many people, times and places I want to acknowledge that it might be impossible to do so appropriately. Still, I will try to name a few, knowing many others also rightfully deserve to appear here and may end up not doing so. I ask them their pardon for my limited memory. Well, here it goes: A thesis is never finished, it gets interrupted, and it has its own time - some people say. The writing of this thesis took an incredibly long time, and it took me a great amount of perseverance to finish it the way it deserves. Resumen Esta tesis doctoral busca profundizar la idea del amor y su relevancia en y para los estudios internacionales de paz, y las consecuencias de su integración en la docencia e investigación de Estudios de Paz y Conflictos, Relaciones Internacionales, Desarrollo y Derechos Humanos. Para tanto, utiliza una metodología trans-racional que abarca, además de una reflexión crítica sobre los estudios internacionales de paz, también aspectos intersubjetivos en la relación del investigador-docente con su tema de estudio y sus colegas/alumnado. La tesis empieza con una definición preliminar del amor y como el tema ha sido tratado en la investigación para la paz, para luego hacer un análisis de la producción teórica de las Relaciones Internacionales, del Desarrollo y de los Derechos Humanos, llegando tres aspectos claves del amor: apertura, consciencia y presencia. Finalmente, aborda la integración del amor en la investigación-docencia a partir de estos tres aspectos. Esta tesis termina señalando que la integración del amor en los estudios de paz evidencia la importancia de la dimensión humana en esta área de estudio, ampliando la epistemología de la paz y yendo más allá del mero acopio de conocimientos, de manera que acerque los estudios de paz a una experiencia de vida en lugar de una mera área de investigación. Abstract This doctoral thesis seeks to deepen the idea of love and its relevance in and for international studies in peace, and the consequences of its integration in the teaching and research of Peace and Conflict Studies, International Relations, Development and Human Rights. The research was carried out with a trans-rational methodology that includes, in addition to a critical reflection on international peace studies, also intersubjective aspects emerging from the relationship of the teacher-researcher with their subject of study and her colleagues / students. The thesis begins with a preliminary definition of love and how it has been addressed in peace research. It continues with an analysis of the theoretical production of International Relations, Development and Human Rights, culminating in three key aspects of love: openness, awareness and presence. Then it addresses the integration of love in research-teaching based on these three aspects. This thesis ends thus making the point that integrating love in peace studies evidences the importance of the human dimension in this area of study, enlarging the epistemology of peace and going beyond the mere gathering of knowledge, in a way that makes peace studies closer to a life experience rather than a research area. Ciamarra At present, our students are valued for their capacities to thoughtlessly absorb and regurgitate standardized facts and figures. Meanwhile, the affective facets of schooling, such as love, relationality, compassion, acceptance, integrity, and altruism are overlooked by politicians and educational decision makers, who claim these elements lack academic rigor. In this study, I use the dominant views of the educational elect to accentuate the current push for a more standardized, accountable, and scientific approach to schooling. Then, I employ the counternarrative as a methodological tool for talking back, offering up personal stories and experiences that frame the power of agapic love to demystify the normative views of schooling. More specifically, I employ personal narrative as means for providing teachers a voice, one which aims to debunk confounding generalizations or refute common claims about what education is or ought to be. Finally, I analyze the divergent stories through multiple theoretic and practical lenses in order to make meaning of my experiences. Moreover, the counternarratives in this study focus on how agapic love can be utilized in pedagogical and curricular efforts to transcend the present conditions that hinder many students and teachers from being and becoming who they really are.

    The Romance of the Rose 179 The Romance of the Rose The Romance of the Rose, an allegorical dream-vision poem stemming from the troubadour tradition of courtly love and written in medieval French, was perhaps the most widely read book in 14th- and 15th-century Europe. During the century of high scholasticism (the 13th), this most influential of all works of medieval romance emerged. It was composed in two stages. Around 1230, Guillaume de Lorris came out with the first 4,058 lines, without quite finishing it. Around 1275 (the year after the death of both Aquinas and Bonaventure), Jean de Meun, a very different personality who studied at the University of Paris and who warred against the mendicant orders, produced a massive amplification of Guillaume’s work, adding 17,724 lines, shifting towards the encyclopedic and dialectic, changing its character from earnest to satiric. C. S. Lewis’s scholarly work The Allegory of Love helped to revive modern interest in the work. Lewis argues for the realism of the allegorical method employed in The Romance: “[This method] was originally forced into existence by a profound moral revolution occurring in the latter days of paganism. For reasons of which we know nothing at all. , men’s gaze was turned inward. TIME, PRESENCE, AND HISTORICAL INJUSTICE BERBER BEVERNAGE For what seems apparent in former Yugoslavia, in Rwanda and in South Africa is that the past continues to torment because it is not past. These places are not living in a serial order of time, but in a simultaneous one, in which the past and present are a continuous, agglutinated mass of fantasies, distortions, myths and lies. Crimes can never be safely fixed in the historical past; they remain locked in the eternal present, crying out for vengeance.1 ABSTRACT The relationship between history and justice traditionally has been dominated by the idea of the past as distant or absent (and with that, irreversible). This ambiguous ontological status makes it very difficult to situate the often-felt “duty to remember” or obligation to “do justice to the past” in that past itself, and this has led philosophers from Friedrich Nietzsche to Keith Jenkins to plead against an “obsession” with history in favor of an ethics aimed at the present. History’s ability to contribute to the quest for justice, as a result, often seems very restricted or even nonexistent. The introduction of the “presence”-paradigm in historiography can potentially alter this relation between history and justice. However, to do so it should be conceived in such a way that it offers a fundamental critique of the metaphysical dichotomy between the present and the absent and the underlying concept of time (chronosophy) that supports this dichotomy. The “presence”-paradigm can be emancipatory and productive only if presence and absence are not perceived as absolute dichotomies.

ABSTRACT Today, Africa has more countries with food security problems than any other region on the globe. Two-thirds of all countries suffering food insecurity are in Africa. Present trends would mean that the number ofchronically undernourished people in the Southern region ofAfrica would rise from 180 to 300 million by the year 2010. In this research, I note that in the face ofthis food or hunger crisis, particularly in Africa, some have argued that genetic engineering biotechnology promises to combat food insecurity. Opponents of the technology argue that, to the contrary, genetic engineering biotechnology undermines food security, food sovereignty and livelihoods on the continent. The technology is designed to block access to food and kill agricultural bio­ diversity, vest excessive, monopolistic and exclusive power in the hands of a few bio­ technologists and giant multinational corporations, and ultimately, create hunger and poverty in Africa and other developing countries by undermining organic and conventional means offarming. The thesis offers a critical theological assessment of the structural, ecological and socio­ economic effects of genetic engineering and biotechnology on agriculture, food production, food security and sovereignty in Africa against some core theological principles.

    170312 Sermon – Page 1 of 4 “Ladies and gentlemen, the Beatles!” With those words, spoken 53 years, one month, and three days ago, Ed Sullivan introduced John, Paul, George, and Ringo to a TV audience of 73 million gathered in front their TV sets to see The Beatles’ first live performance in the United States. Sixty percent of the television sets in America were tuned in to witness the birth of Beatlemania as the girls in the audience screamed, and Paul sang, “Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you, tomorrow I’ll miss you…” They played five songs that night, and by the end of the show they owned the hearts of millions of American youth of all ages. Never before had so many viewers tuned in to a live television program; what they saw would change rock and roll – and the world – forever. The energy, the innocence, the enthusiasm, the matching black suits with black ties, the mop-top haircuts, the smiles, the irreverent banter… The Beatles exploded onto the pop-culture scene, and we were ready to follow them wherever and however they went. In a matter of months Beatles fan clubs were formed across the country, and every imaginable knick-knack had the pictures of the band on it. There were Fab Four lunch boxes, dolls, serving trays, trading cards, coloring books, coin holders, shot glasses, mop-top wigs, and even Beatle-branded talcum powder and nylon stockings! To say the Beatles wrote the musical score for the movie that was my formative years would be a huge understatement.
