Mr. Justice Muhammad Bashir Jehangiri has rich experience in the legal profession and the judiciary, acquired over a period of about 38 years. His Lordship was born on 1st February, 1937 at Mansehra, NWFP. He received his school education in Lahore, obtaining distinctions and did B.A. (First-Class-First) from Abbottabad in 1960. He obtained his LL.B degree from the University Law College, Peshawar in 1962 and joined the Bar in February, 1963. After qualifying the West Pakistan P.C.S. (Judicial Branch) Exami- nation, he was appointed as Civil Judge on 7th March, 1966. After serving at various stations as Civil Judge and Senior Civil Judge, he was promoted as Additional District and Sessions Judge on 6th July, 1974 and as District and Sessions Judge on 24th October, 1974. His Lordship served as Judicial Commissioner, Northern Areas, from June, 1979 to December, 1982. He remained Special Judge, Customs, Taxation and Anti-smuggling (Central), Peshawar from March, 1983 to September, 1984. He took-over the charge as Joint Secretary, Ministry of Justice and Parliamentary Affairs (Justice Division), Islamabad on iii 12.9.1984. -

Unfortunately Pakistan's system of educational management and supervision is too much entrenched in the legacy of past and has not succeeded, over the last forty years, in modifying and reforming itself in order to cope with the expanding and changing demands of eduCation in the country since independence( i.e. 1947). The empirical findings of this study support the following. Firstly, the existing style of supervision of secondary schools in Sindh, applied through traditional inspection of schools, is defective and outdated. Secondly, the behaviour of the educational supervisor tends to be too rigid and autocratic . Thirdly, the reasons for the resistance of existing system of supervision to change along the lines and policies formulated in recent years are to be found outside the education system and not merely within the education system or within the supervisory sub-system. -

In 2000, the Pakistani Government brought major higher education liberalization and expansion reforms by encouraging market approaches based on self-financed programs. These approaches have been particularly important in the area of teacher education and development. The Pakistani Government data reports (AEPAM Islamabad) on education show vast growth in market-model off-campus (open and distance) post-baccalaureate teacher education programs in the last fifteen years. Many academics and scholars have criticized traditional off-campus programs for their low quality; new policy reforms in 2009, with the support of USAID, initiated the four-year honors program, with the intention of phasing out all traditional programs by 2018. However, the new policy still allows traditional off-campus market-model programs to be offered. This important policy reform juncture warrants empirical research on the effectiveness of traditional programs to inform current and future policies. Thus, this study focused on assessing the worth of traditional and off-campus programs, and the effects of market approaches, on the implementation of traditional post-baccalaureate teacher education programs offered by public institutions in a southern province of Pakistan. -

There are different types of institutions available like private and public institutions, technical institutions, and madrasas (religious institutions). These institutes are having the triangle of three main pillars; consisted of Teachers, Students, and Curriculum. There are two main types of schools in Pakistan and all over the world. One is public and other is private school system. Now a days private schools are becoming more favorite and attractive for majority of the students due to their better education systems, test criteria and knowledge creation vis-a-vis public schools, which comparatively very cheap but inefficient are losing their attraction. Parents prefer to send their children in private schools and avoid public schools. The main objective of this study is to investigate why people prefer high charging private schools over free public schools (That charge nothing)? We use primary data collected through constructed questionnaire and survey method was applied for collection of data from the target respondents of private and public schools located in District Vehari, Pakistan. The results show that five main factors emerge as important determinants of private school choice. -

[email protected] Abstract At present a number of initiatives are being taken from various bodies for bringing qualitative reform in teacher education in Pakistan. To make these measures more focused and cost effective, there is a dire need to identify the significant areas/aspects of quality improvement. This paper presents the findings of the study which was focused on identifying the quality indicators in teacher education programmes and ranking them in the light of perceptions of teacher educators working at public university of Pakistan. It was found that faculty of teacher education institutions (TEIs) considered 17 indicators most important, 12 indicators moderately important and one indicator little important. ‘Teachers’ professional development’ received top most rating whereas ‘publication of self assessment reports’ was the bottom ranked indicator. This study is significant in the sense that it generated primary data about quality assurance in teacher education in Pakistan. The findings of this study have implications for HEC, Accreditation Council for Teacher Education and TEIs’ management for highlighting the important aspects which may be focused for quality improvement in teacher education programmes. For assessing quality of academic programmes using the suggested quality indicators, it is recommended that standards in the form of statements may be formulated for each indicator. The Rise of Private Schooling in Pakistan: Catering to the Urban Elite or Educating the Rural Poor? Tahir Andrabi* Pomona College Jishnu Das The World Bank Asim Ijaz Khwaja Harvard University March 21, 2002 Abstract: Using a new census of private educational institutions in Pakistan together with the population census, we present evidence that private schooling, particularly at the primary level is indeed a large and increasingly important factor in education in Pakistan both in absolute terms and relative to public schooling. While the rural-urban gap still remains, the growth trends showed a marked improvement in rural areas. Contrary to expectations, private schools are not an urban elite phenomenon. Not only are they prevalent in rural areas but also are affordable to middle and even low income groups. Private schools have lower student-teacher ratios than public schools and while teachers were largely untrained and less experienced, their education level matched those in public schools. Fees respond in predictable ways to measured school inputs, suggesting that parents can infer quality variation between schools. Private schools are mainly coeducational, have a high percentage of girls’ enrollment and a majority of the teachers are females. Looking at just the rural areas at the patwar circle level, we find that those areas that have a greater supply of educated women are able to respond very effectively to the growing demand for education by formation of schools and by increased enrollment. * [email protected], [email protected], -

The main objective of this study is to find out the role of universities in transforming the students as true professionals. The research is conducted on one university of Lahore, Pakistan. It includes the analysis of data of students collected at their entry and exit level. The gap analysis between the two clearly defines the role of university in transforming the students. Keywords: Universities, Transform, Students Introduction The typical role of education is to shift the knowledge of one generation, usually the formal, to the other, usually the next (A W Astin, 1977; Schultz, 1971). The educational institutes facilitate and formalize this role (Lambooy, 2004). The institutes of higher education have an additional role, as discussed by De Weert (1999), of equipping the students with knowledge of their being (Gibbons, 1998), of their self (Alexander W Astin, 1977), of their environment (Gumport, 2002), of the society they are living in (Jarvis, 2001), of the expectations of their parents (Weinstein & Weinstein, 2002), or in more comprehensive vocabulary, the meaning of life, in addition to the shifting of the knowledge of their yester generation.
