Starfire is going to become an addict again to track down an alien drug ring. How is that supposed to work? You're really going to stop drug runners when you're out of your gourd on drugs? She gets off the drugs in less than an issue due to her sister showing up from space with her magic drug curing machine. And now Roy used to be an alcoholic instead of a heroin addict. It's This book is the epitome of the new 52, all style, no substance. My problem with Lobdell's writing is that he never finishes anything. It got cancelled so there's not much they could have done plot wise other than try, but you know that takes Red Hood and the Outlaws: Vol 7. This again is such an oddly collected volume and it just seems pieced together. I guess if you've stuck with it this far you need to pick this up to see the ending but it ain't that great. This volume definitely suffers from the fact that it was cancelled. And what the heck was with that last issue? I don't know whether it was part of another DC event or what, but I think it undermined the Outlaws' friendship and, as such, the entire series. It was still written and included in Red Hood and the Outlaws: Vol 7 volume, which means I can't give this 5 stars; however, in the over all continuity of the Red Hood story, it doesn't really exist I hopeso I also can't give this volume anything lower. Especially since everything preceding it--everything that is actually a part of the core New 52 "Red Hood and the Outlaws" story--was a perfect way to conclude these three characters' interactions which each other. The action in it was top-notch, but it never lost sight of the emotion: the friendship and trust that tied these three broken souls together and the way their understanding of hardship helped each one to grow and evolve as individuals. They were outlaws, yes, but they were friends first--friends who wanted to help each other and then help the world in their own way. Together, they moved beyond vengeance and self-degradation. They moved toward being able to have a future--perhaps even towards being heroes. And if not that, maybe anti-heroes that stressed the second half of that word more than the first. This was a complex, interesting story all the way from volume one to Red Hood and the Outlaws: Vol 7 seven. These books dove into what living beings not humans, because, you know, Starfire is an alien are capable of It was a story about becoming better, even if that doesn't always mean being good. And that sometimes, doing good, doesn't always mean doing what's right. Like I said, this was a complex story with complex characters that wasn't always pretty--but that did always deliver on both action, plot development, and character evolution. This series is one of the few in the New 52 that seemed to work all the way through, and I have to say that I'm excited to see what DC does with Jason, Roy, and Starfire in the universe's next chapter in Rebirth. It just comes out of nowhere, and is resolved out of nowhere as well. I get her wanting to infiltrate the smugglers, sure, but why not tell the boys what she was doing? They would help her, for sure.
