Students celebrate Grandparents Day — nearly all week!

Students at Sanibel Elementary School celebrated National Grand- parents Day (which was Sunday, Sept. 12) all week at the school. The Storytellers of Sanibel, Bert and Noel McCarry visited Tuesday to tell tales to the kindergarten class, then returned Wednesday for the first grade and Thursday for sec- ond grade. Grandparents and "spe- cial friends" enjoyed the tales told by the popular couple, then joined their young students for lunch in the cafeteria.

The upcoming election for chamber board members has certainly created a lot of last minute politics. A part of this last minute push is the misinformation currently being dispensed by the Chamber Board Re-Election Committee, on the subject of the proposed C.R.S. (Central Reservation System). Our members are being told that the C.R.S. System is still only being investigated, that it is not a done deal and that if only the members of S.I.C.C. (Speakers Interested in Chamber Conflict) had expressed these concerns to the Board they would have dropped the whole idea. The Truth Is The members of S.I.C.C. met with 2 members of the Board, the Director of the Board and the Chambers Lawyer, Mr. Steve Maon May 29th, 1998. At the meeting the members of S.I.C.C. told the board that all legal action would cease and that no objections to the currently seated board would be pursued.... 7 On Conditions D That the board cease any action to implement the controversial Central Reservation System D Cease any activities that would create for profit business by the Chamber in competition with its members D Accept requested changes to the by laws that would have the effect of returning the voting rights to our members The board refused to accept these very simple and clearly beneficial terms to put an end to Ihis controversy. ISLANDER 'Friday, September 18, 1998 • ISA Commentary UTTERS Around Our Town PLANT Scott MARTELL Islander Editor Cooler weather means traffic sure to follow... his week actually started off .... dare I say cold? Nuts, but kind of true — drizzling, overcast, clean air with a gentle bite. Of course it must be an Taberration and summer weather can't be over, though with El Nino one never knows. So, when the weather starts to change, what is the first thing one thinks of on Sanibel? How about traffic? Gridlock? Everyone talks about it, but I still don't see any tangible work being done about it. I don't think spending millions of dollars for property along Periwinkle Way is an answer. Spending money on the bike path is a partial answer, as are using traffic cops at intersections. But, here's what I'd really like to see — seasonal public (trolley) transportation. I'd like to see a parking lot near the causeway offering free transportation — no park- ing hassles on island, ride to beach and shopping. Another small lot could be on Cause- way Road to entice more riders. Ridership would be encouraged by aggressive adver- tising, plus negotiating with Lee County to raise the toll for single trips. Merchants might pitch in with all kinds of free promotions for trolley riders (1/2 dinners/pitchers, etc.). The public transportation could be funded by the causeway increase (or the money we get already), by Tourist Development Council and other grants, by trolley advertis- ing. The chamber ought to pitch in, and so should taxpayers. you CHOOSE...sewEK OR PARK? What do you think?
