Luego subrayó esa nueva realidad con Poison Season (2015), una épica exploración de la vida neoyorquina con arreglos que van del rock al jazz pasando por la música de cámara. Merecida recompensa para alguien capaz de saltar de Steely Dann a Guided By Voices, de lo electrónico a lo orquestal, sin solución de continuidad pero con una envidiable y extraordinaria coherencia. Cabe recordar también que a finales de 2013 publicó un EP, Five Spanish Songs, con versiones de Sr. Chinarro, de quien se ha declarado muy fan. El 20 de octubre vuelve a la carga con ken, duodécimo álbum de estudio de su carrera, un trabajo para el que Dan Bejar ha buscado inspiración en los últimos años de la era Thatcher, tras encontrar una especie de epifania en el descubrimiento de que la canción The Wild Ones de Suede tuvo como primer título Ken. Ha sido producido por Josh Wells, de Black Mountain, quien viene ejerciendo de batería de Destroyer desde 2012. A diferencia de Poison Season, ken no ha sido grabado como "un disco de banda", si bien todos los componentes de la formación aparecen en él. Nicholas Krgovich es un músico canadiense de pop refinado que ha colaborado, entre otros, con Mount Eerie, Deradoorian, Nite Jewel y Amber Coffman (de Dirty Projectors). Ha publicado varios trabajos como miembro de No Kids, Gigi y P:ano, así como con su propio nombre, el último de ellos The Hills (2016). En sus composiciones se palpa tanto la influencia del Great American Songbook como la de Sade, Prefab Sprout y The Blue Nile.     The New Pornographers For what purpose the popular song? Does the popular song have a purpose? Is it just a sequence of auditory gestures, desperate acts, adrift in the bigger broader silence of an unforgiving cultural landscape? In what follows, we will assume that the purpose of the popular song is to unite warring disputants and to repair the manifold puncture wounds of life, so that life is revealed, again, as less accursed than it appears. And let’s assume that we go on listening to the popular song, which in the vast majority of its iterations is a failure, because we are chronic in our need for this rehabilitation of our puncture-wounded selves. Take any fine example, take “All You Need Is Love,” by the Beatles, or “Walk Away, Renee,” by the Left Banke, or “Tears of a Clown,” by Smokey Robinson. Try listening to these songs. Almost immediately, your suppurations begin to clot. Into this tryingly difficult history of the popular song stride The New Pornographers, into a period in which it has to be acknowledged that the medium is mostly dead, is passed, is no longer a uniting force, but, more frequently, a medium of division, one entirely controlled by the Ownership Society and made profitable according to shareholders who don’t give a fuck if your puncture wounds are healed over as long as the product ships. The New Pornographers, stunningly, do not seem to understand that the popular song is dead, is passed, and The New Pornographers, despite their complete and nearly monastic understanding of the Secret Knowledge of the popular song, will themselves into being, characterized by a uniform devotion to the great history that precedes them by only a couple of decades, and their coming into being in a somewhat unlikely place, Vancouver, not previously noted for a unvarying profusion of rock genius, is particular not only for uniformity of purpose but because they manage, in this uniformity, to bring a considerable cast of local adepts all as one into the tent.

In an attempt to hold on to this feeling, I decided to lift the original title GENRE: ALTERNATIVE of that song and use it for my own purposes. It’s unclear to me what that purpose is, or what the connection is. I was not thinking about Suede when making this record. I was thinking about the TERRITORY RESTRICTIONS: NOT AVAILABLE IN last few years of the Thatcher era. Those were the years when music first really came at me like a NORTH AMERICA; EXCLUSIVE TO HOSTESS IN sickness, I had it bad. Maybe “The Wild Ones” speaks to that feeling, probably why Suede made no JAPAN sense in America. I think “ken” also means “to know.” VINYL NOT RETURNABLE ken was produced by Josh Wells of Black Mountain, who has been the drummer in Destroyer since 2012. The album was recorded in its entirety in the jam space/studio space that the group calls The Balloon Factory. However, unlike Poison Season , ken was not recorded as a “band” record, though everyone in the band does make an appearance.
