The present study was an effort to know the extent of political participation of women in functioning as well as in the electoral process of the panchayats and the problems faced by them. In this regard, sample consisted of 125 women respondents from 5 gram panchayats of Hindol Block in Dhenkanal District of Odisha. The study was conducted in March-April immediately after the general panchayat elections in February, 2012. The findings of the study revealed that political participation of women in the functioning as well as in the electoral process of the panchayats is not satisfactory. Some of the respondents even do not know the names of political parties and they casted their votes identifying the symbols of political parties. Most of the women have great apathy towards politics.
