    The descendants of Brian Boru Catherine Swift Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick The history of English surnames • Before Norman conquest in 1066 nobody possessed a surname and people were called by first name in Old English or Norse with occasional nicknames.e.g. Eirik Bloodaxe, Ethelred the Unready • Spur to surnames in England seems to be desire of leading barons to identify their families with estates back in Normandy .e.g point of origin. • Most knights in south of England possessed surnames by about 1200 but still not all knights in north by 1300. • Ordinary people are rather slower but, starting with richer merchants, fashion starts to spread from c.1250 and becomes especially productive c. 1350. Majority of population seems to have acquired surname by c. 1400 • We have a good data base for studying English surnames c. 1400 because of the poll taxes of 1377, 1379 and 1381 which embraced entire adult population. (The 1379 poll tax included occupations). The nature of English surnames • Surnames which originate in personal names, especially of one’s dad: e.g. Robertson, Dawson • Particularly common are surnames which refer to district /townswhere one originates • Occupational surnames e.g. Smith, Carver, Teyllar, Clockmaker etc. Some of these are now obscure: Clouter = leather-worker; Quelewright = wheel- maker; Swynlibber = a man who castrates pigs. CHAPTER 04 - Clodagh Downey 7/20/15 1:11 PM Page 1 CHAPTER 4 Literature and learning in early medieval Meath CLODAGH DOWNEY The medieval literature of Ireland stands out among the vernacular literatures of western Europe for its volume, its diversity and its antiquity, and within this treasury of cultural riches, Meath holds a prominence greatly disproportionate to its geographical extent, however that extent is reckoned. Indeed, the first decision confronting anyone who wishes to consider this subject is to define its geographical limits: the modern county of Meath is quite a different entity to the medieval kingdom of Mide from which it gets its name and which itself designated different areas at different times. It would be quite defensible to include in a survey of medieval literature those areas which are now under the administration of other modern counties, but which may have been part of the medieval kingdom at the time that that literature was produced.

    Luke McInerney Documents from the Thomond Papers at Petworth House Archive1 [with index] The Petworth House Archive (PHA) is an important and under-exploited repository for research into seventeenth and eighteenth-century Co. Clare. Petworth House, the historic seat of the earls of Egremont, holds primary source material relating to the estates of the earls of Thomond in North Munster, chiefly for Co. Clare but also Co. Limerick and Co. Tipperary. The material preserved at Petworth contains a range of material includ- ing estate management documentation, correspondence, accounts, legal papers, military, parliamentary papers, family history, maps and surveys.2 Only a small proportion of the tens of thousands of documents in the archive relate to the earls of Thomond’s Irish estates and the surviving ‘Thomond papers’ probably represent only a fraction of the original col- lection, loss and damage having taken its toll. Not all of the Thomond material is listed in the current Petworth catalogue; a large portion of the material is still available only in an unpublished early nineteenth-century manuscript catalogue. For historians of Gaelic Ireland the Thomond papers are notewor- thy as they contain detail on landholding at different social levels; key legal instruments such as inquisitions post mortem of Connor O’Brien (1581) third earl of Thomond, and Donough O’Brien (1624) fourth earl of Thomond, are preserved in the archive, along with petitions and leases of Gaelic freeholders. Freeholders of sept-lineages petitioned for restoration of their lands as they were increasingly disenfranchised in the new land- holding matrix of seventeenth century Co.

    Visit by Society President and Chief Executive to Academies and Other Agencies in UK, Ireland and Canada; 29 Oct. – 9 Nov. 2019 Andrew Cleland and Wendy Larner Key Findings All academies are thinking hard about “research culture” which includes the academy taking a leadership role on matters like career structures, research integrity, dealing with poor behaviour and misconduct etc. All academies are taking assertive actions to diversify the types of people being made Fellows and we are behind some others in this respect. In particular, we are less advanced on ‘proactive nomination’ of under-represented candidates and on updating the nature of a nomination to be inclusive of diverse forms of excellence. The term “inclusive excellence” was used in a few places and is a terminology we could adopt. ECRs initiatives are common but everyone is concerned about career structures and progression and seeking to find the right engagement model with the Young Academy model not being seen as the right model by many. The College model of the Royal Society Canada seems superior to Young Academies generally (and is similar to the best Young Academy models – Scotland and Netherlands). Industry and professional linkages are a vital part of engineering and technology academies, and to a slightly lesser extent, this is also true of medical academies. Separate academies in these domains have emerged when science-based academies have not been sufficiently inclusive of the different ethos of clinical research, engineering or technology. London-based Academies There are five “national” academies in the United Kingdom – Royal Society (science), British Academy (humanities and social science), Royal Academy of Engineering, Academy of Medical Sciences and Academy of Social Sciences.
