Historic Cafés as Cultural Heritage International Meeting of European Historic Cafés

Objectives Given that Café Santa Cruz has hosted a quite varied set of cultural initiatives of the most diverse nature, it is our intention to promote an international meeting of Historic Cafés where, in addition to talking about their history and stories, we will also discuss means of collaboration and exchange to seek an effective response to the challenges posed to this important sector.

Thus, in order to find conditions for joint collaboration there are some topics that we would like to address in a working meeting where a large and significant group of Historic Cafés from Portugal and Europe are present. The indicative/provisional work plan, which emerges from a common vision shared by ACH and EHICA, is as follows (or topics under discussion):

a) One of the challenges for the coming years in this sector is to keep up with market trends without losing its identity (which is the strength of its essence) and which results from its history and its tradition; b) Implementation of an international exchange programme for those responsible for the various Historic Cafés to enable the exchange of experiences; c) Creation of a passport for those who visit Historic Cafés in Portugal and in Europe. This model can be inspired by the credentials of Pilgrims of Santiago; d) Creation of a European Historic Cafés network; e) The creation of a network of historic cafés should allow and enable historic cafés to be part of tourist circuits, deserving the same prominence as other historic and heritage sites to visit and enjoy;

f) To propose the creation of the European Historic Cafés Day (which may eventually have another similar designation); g) To plan a more active participation in the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe - Advisory Forum; h) To discuss the possibility of a Historic Cafés meeting in Brussels (Belgium) – to plan an event for the promotion and dissemination of Historic Cafés in the European Parliament; i) To plan a meeting in the European Institute of Cultural Routes, in Luxemburg.

In addition to the working meetings and interchanges, the representatives of the cafés invited will also enjoy an extensive programme with complementary activities to the programme described below, which are related to Portuguese culture, such as tasting local gastronomy, visiting the most emblematic spaces of our city or listening to Coimbra Fado.

The invitation to participate in the working meeting and the debate will be extended to all Portuguese and European Historic Cafés.

Café Santa Cruz

We hope that this initiative, like others similar to it, will make a strong contribution to the customer loyalty, distinction and prestige of both Café Santa Cruz and the city of Coimbra.

In the same year that the 20th edition of the Cultural Week of the University of Coimbra is commemorated, Café Santa Cruz celebrates its 95th anniversary. The building where it is based, the former S. João de Santa Cruz Church, has been a National Monument since 11th October 1921.

We also believe that with this initiative (following others which Café Santa Cruz has promoted over the years, including those in partnership with the University of Coimbra and 4 Historic Cafés as Cultural Heritage International Meeting of Historic Cafés

as part of its Cultural Week), we are taking the first steps towards having Café Santa Cruz also distinguished as Cultural Heritage of Portugal.

Conclusion

Not forgetting the commercial side, which fuels these initiatives, the purpose of this event is to strengthen the concept of Cafés (Café Santa Cruz in particular, but also “the café” in general) as a space for disseminating culture, sharing experiences and looking forward to the future. A living space...

Hence, if history is made every day, why not make it around a table, under the texture of stone, of “the heart of stone” and with the aroma of coffee.

In this sense, telling the long history of Cafés, highlighting their contribution to society, to the forming, nourishing and supporting of human beings is an opportunity of great honour for us. It joins and unites people valuing this diversity of experiences, backgrounds and events which so distinguish us and, therefore, brings us together and unites us. As the poet says: “How I’d love to hear a human voice”!

Some events that may take place at the same time: a) Exhibition of old photos of Café Santa Cruz, which tell the story of its presence in Praça 8 de Maio b) Exhibition of oil paintings from historic cafés. c) Exhibition of works (painting, photographs, texts…) which are part of the anthology “Em Nome do Teu Nome”, 2016. d) Drawing up of a brochure with photos of the event and also, most importantly, with the contributions (interventions) of all the guests. e) 18th April is the International Day for Monuments and Sites - this initiative may be integrated into the national and regional programmes. f) JAZZ with the support of the Coimbra Music Conservatory g) Photos of each of the cafés attending the Meeting, to be included in the brochure h) Exhibition and sale of old books about the city of Coimbra. i) Life testimonies, events which happened in other cafés and which have left their mark or changed someone’s life.
