Samuel spends less and less time with Vandad as he becomes more drawn into his relationship with Laide, and Vandad, who is struggling to find work, is broke and misses his best friend. When an opportunity arises to become more involved in Samuel’s life and make a buck at the same time, he jumps at the chance. But after disaster strikes, the question of who did what drives a wedge between the friends. Everything I Don’t Remember ( Allt jag inte minns ) is a gripping tale about love and memory. Chen Spring 2018 © Christian Mark Gullette 2018 Abstract Challenging Swedishness: Intersections of Neoliberalism, Race, and Queerness in the Works of Jonas Hassen Khemiri and Ruben Östlund by Christian Mark Gullette Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian Languages and Literatures and the Designated Emphasis in Women, Gender, and Sexuality University of California, Berkeley Professor Linda Haverty Rugg, Chair This dissertation explores the work of author Jonas Hassen Khemiri and filmmaker Ruben Östlund, examining the ways both artists consistently negotiate racial identification and “Swedishness” in neoliberal economic contexts that are often at odds with other Swedish, exceptionalist discourses of social justice. Khemiri and Östlund represent contrasting perspectives and tonalities, yet both artists identify the successful competition for capital as a potentially critical component in achieving access to “Swedishness.” Khemiri and Östlund recognize that race and economics are intertwined in neoliberal arguments, even in Sweden, something their works help to elucidate. The implications of such similar observations from very different artists might go overlooked if discussed in isolation. I argue that it is crucial to analyze the negotiation of identity in these works not merely in abstract economic terms, but through their use of a very specific neoliberal economic discourse.

Literature and Diversity Magnus Nilsson Malmö Institute for Studies of Migration, Diversity and Welfare (MIM), Malmö University [email protected] In this article I describe how contemporary Swedish literature which thematizes cultural diversity is understood within a powerful discourse about the so-called multicultural society, centred on an opposition between a culturally homogenous past and a culturally diverse present, and emphasizing the phenomena ethnicity and identity. I also try to suggest an alternative way of relating literature to a society characterized by diversity. This suggestion is based on Walter Benn Michaels’ and Nancy Fraser’s analyses of the epoch of “posthistoricism” and “the postsocialist condition” respectively, and my argument is that the study of the relationship between literature and diversity should be undertaken from a transformative/deconstructive perspective. 443 Literature and Diversity1 In her essay “Makten över prefixen”, the Swedish author Astrid Trotzig argues that the contemporary discussion in Sweden about “immigrant literature” is highly problematic. Trotzig takes her point of departure in her own experience, and claims that she receives attention in the public sphere first and foremost because of her ethnicity (she was adopted from Korea), which is perceived as ”exotic” (Trotzig 2005, p. 106). Furthermore she argues that this is part of a more general tendency in discussions about literature and the so called multicultural society.

Responses to questions about familiarity with and interest in authors, literary genre preferences, statements on reading expectations and statements on reading preferences are analyzed using Multiple Correspondence Analysis. The analysis reveals distinct taste profiles that give empirical proof to theoretical analyses of differences in literary taste. The taste profiles can be clearly associated with the institutional role the respondents hold. Interestingly, also gender can be associated with these taste profiles, but gender effects become only notable when the power of specific cultural capital becomes weaker.     From In-Betweenness to Invisibility: Changing Representations of Sweden Finnish Authors Tuire Liimatainen University of Helsinki Abstract In this article, I examine representations of Sweden Finnish authors Antti Jalava and Susanna Alakoski in Swedish literature reviews in the 1980s and 2000s. The study builds on constructivist views of ethnicity and identity in order to understand Sweden Finns’ changing status in a multicultural Sweden. In addition, the article discusses Sweden Finnish literature in relation to recent studies and debates on immigrant literature in Sweden. Sweden Finns are a Finnish ethno-linguistic group, who were recog- nized as a national minority in Sweden in 2000. Immigrants and their descendants are generally excluded from minority policies. Although Finns and the Finnish language have a historical presence in Sweden, most present-day Finnish speakers in Sweden, or those identifying themselves as Sweden Finns, have their background in post-World War II labor migration or even in more recent migration. In addition to integration, Sweden Finns’ status as a national minority derives from a growing aware- ness of Finnish history in Sweden, but also from a unique combination of national, bilateral Finnish Swedish politics as well as Nordic cooperation. Therefore, the rapid change in Sweden Finns’ societal status from immi- grants to a national minority in a few decades raises questions about how different ethnic and cultural boundaries are drawn and redrawn in different times. In order to examine these changing ethnic categories, I use critical discourse analysis (CDA) to analyze how the Swedish majority media have portrayed authors with Finnish background at different times, and how these representations reflect Sweden Finns’ changing societal status in Sweden.

(Auto)biography and Multicultural Experience in Jonas Hassen Khemiri’s Montecore. The Silence of the Tiger Abstract Jonas Hassen Khemiri, born in 1978, is one of the most interesting contemporary Swedish and European writers with a Tunisian immigrant background. His second novel Montecore: en unik tiger (Montecore: The Silence of the Tiger), published in 2006, has got an epistolary form deducted from the exchange of letters between Kadir and Jonas. However, the main character of the novel is Abbas Khemiri – the disappearing, estranged father of Jonas – a figure close to the real writer. Khemiri’s book has got an innovative linguistic form and contains many erudite references to the phenomena of popular culture. It is also a complex portrayal of the different generations of (mainly Arab-based) immigrant and post-immigrant communities in Sweden coupled with a nuanced look on bright and dark sides of the Swedish state, model of identity and integration. This material is enriched by the examples taken from Khemiri’s novel Everything I Don’t Remember and short story As You Would Have Told It To Me (Sort Of) If We Had Known Each Other Before You Died.
