Some financial support from (or via) NKMB (Nordiskt Kollegium för Marin Biologi), during the last years of the existence of this organization (until 1993), is thankfully acknowledged. The primary purpose of these checklists is to faciliate for everyone, trying to identify organisms from the area, to know which species that earlier have been encountered there, or in neighbouring areas. A secondary purpose is to faciliate for non-experts to put as correct names as possible on organisms, including names of authors and years of description. So far these checklists are very preliminary. Due to restricted access to literature there are (some known, and probably many unknown) omissions in the lists. Certainly also several errors may be found, especially regarding taxa like Plathelminthes and Nematoda, where the experience of the compiler is very rudimentary, or. e.g. Porifera, where, at least in certain families, taxonomic confusion seems to prevail. In general, marine, biota—particularly in euphotic and dysphotic zones—depends directly or indirectly on light, but ultraviolet radiation (UV-R) can damage vital molecular machineries. UV-R induces the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and impairs intracellular structures and enzymatic reactions. It can also affect organismal physiologies and eventually alter trophic chains at the ecosystem level. In Antarctica, physical drivers, such as sunlight, sea-ice, seasonality and low temperature are particularly influencing as compared to other regions. The springtime ozone depletion over the Southern Ocean makes organisms be more vulnerable to UV-R. -

In addition, most sol- Taxonomy enogasters are described from one or very few sampling localities, so practically nothing is known about their Biodiversity actual distribution. This lack of information may be attributed to the somewhat labor-intensive nature of the traditional taxonomy of this group, which often results in the exclusion of solenogasters from biodiversity or biogeographic studies. Further, the abyssal basins are one of the most unknown habitats of the planet. Projects such as DIVA (Latitudinal Gradients of Deep-Sea BioDIVersity in the Atlantic Ocean) aim to eliminate such a lack of knowledge about abyssal biodiversity by shedding light on the abundance and distribution of species in this habitat. During the DIVA expeditions (DIVA1: Angola Basin, DIVA 2: Angola, Guinea, and Cape Basin and DIVA⋅3: Argentina and Brazil Basin), a large number of solenogasters was collected. -
