Name of creators: Raasay Estate

Administrative history: Until the 1587 Act of Annexation, which transferred ownership of all church lands to the crown, the lands of Raasay and Rona were held by the as representative of the church. From the 15th century, the of Raasay held these lands as tenants of the Bishop of the Isles. Tradition holds that, prior to this, Raasay and Rona had been held by MacSweens. The MacLeod lairds of Raasay – the MacGilleChaluim – held sway until 1843, when the estate fell into the hands of creditors. In 1846, it was bought by , a West India merchant from London. A swift succession of owners followed, including George Haygarth Rainy (1863-1872), George G MacKay (1872- 1874), William James Armitage (1874-1876) and Edward Herbert Wood (1876-1911). In 1911, the estate was sold to William Baird and Company, Ironmasters of Coatbridge, who developed a mining concern to extract deposits of iron ore found in Raasay. In 1912, work started on new housing for mine workers, situated at Inverarish. During the First World War, German prisoners-of-war were drafted in to keep the mines in operation, managed by Bairds on behalf of the Ministry of Munitions. The company sold off most of the estate in 1923, retaining mineral rights and the areas around the mines. That year, most of the estate was purchased by the Board of Agriculture for

Scotland, later the Department of Agriculture for , currently the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department. The mining plant had been put into care and maintenance after the First World War but was substantially dismantled in 1943. Baird and Company then sold off the workers’ houses at Inverarish Terrace. In 1949, the Department of Agriculture granted land in Raasay to the Forestry Commission for the purposes of planting. Hydro-electricity reached the island via a submarine cable from Braes in Skye in 1956. In 1961, the Department sold nearly 10.5 acres of Raasay Estate to Dr John Green of Cooden, Sussex. Other parcels of land followed, including William Baird and Company’s remaining interests in the island in 1968. Part of Raasay Estate was purchased by the Highlands and Islands Development Board, later known as Highlands and Islands Enterprise, in 1979.
