In the spirit of past workshops, I will be conducting a photography workshop on Skye from May 26 – June 1, 2019 focusing solely on photographing the landscape. I will provide photographic guidance during each outing, and evenings will be spent processing the day’s images using Adobe® Lightroom and reviewing your photographs. No worries about your Lightroom skill level either! Our “base of operations” will be the Hallaig Guest House, a modern bed and breakfast on northeastern Skye and owned by our good friends, Willy and Betty Campbell.

    OTTERS, WILDLIFE AND HERITAGE OF SKYE AND RAASAY (£390 including accommodation with Bed and Breakfast only and ferry cost) 13 - 18 June 2011 (5 Nights) 8 – 13 August 2011 (5 nights) Walking about 6-8 miles a day over rough tracks This trip is designed to introduce you to the wildlife, scenery and archaeology of Skye and Raasay. Specialities include otters, eagles and seals together with some fascinating archaeological remains. Skye has the densest breeding population of golden eagles in Western Europe and the white-tailed sea eagle is also sometimes seen. The West Coast of Scotland and the Northern Isles are also the last remaining stronghold of the Eurasian otter in the UK. Two species of seal are to be found in our coastal waters: the common or harbour seal with its puppy-like face and the much rarer, large grey Atlantic seal, which likes the ruggedness of the coast around the Hebrides. Skye and Raasay lie at about 58o latitude - the same as Moscow or the Labrador Sea which freezes over every winter. We are, after all, only 5o from the Arctic Circle and yet we have a much milder climate brought about by the influence of the Gulf Stream, that huge ocean current which transports heat from the tropics to our more temperate area. Rainfall is high on the islands averaging 120cm on the coast and 300cm on the hills. The average summer temperature is about 16o and the islands have about 1,200 hours of sunshine per year.     Residential field trip to Raasay Friday 27th to Monday 30th April 2018 Leader: Dr Brian Bell Friday 27th April We drove to Skye in shared cars and boarded the ferry at Sconser for the twenty-five-minute sail to Raasay. By late afternoon the group had all met up at Raasay House where we would be staying. Saturday 28th April, am. Report by Seonaid Leishman When Brian Bell was asked by Maggie Donnelly to take a GSG excursion to Raasay it was clear that long notice was required, not only to fit in with Brian’s reputation and busy schedule, but because of the popularity of the main accommodation on the Island! We therefore had 18 months to build up high expectations – all of which were all met! The original Macleod house was burned following Culloden and rebuilt in 1747. Boswell, visiting in 1773 states, “we found nothing but civility, elegance and plenty”. Not much has changed. The Raasay House Community Trust has worked hard to set up the Hotel and Outdoor Centre in this elegant building. On the Friday we joined Brian and his colleague Ian Williamson at the House and had the first of many excellent meals followed by an introductory talk in the House library provided for our Group’s use. The Island has well exposed rocks ranging in age from Archaean Lewisian Gneiss, through Torridonian sedimentary rocks, Triassic and Jurassic including Raasay Ironstone and topped by Palaeogene lavas and sills. We would see all these exposures – however not necessarily in the right order! Saturday morning before breakfast photos were urgently being taken of sun on the Red Cuillins – this weather and view wouldn’t change all weekend! The Red Cuillins from Raasay House Brian then explained that because of the sun he wanted to skip sequence and NOT start with the oldest rocks, in order to ensure a great photo that morning on the east coast at Hallaig.

Background & Context Situated is in the north-east of the Isle of Skye, in the Scottish Highlands, Staffin is renowned for its scenery and thousands of people from all over the world come to see its scenic landmarks which include the Quiraing, Old Man of Storr and Kilt Rock. Known as Taobh Sear in Gaelic, Staffin has a resident population of more than 500 people, who live in 23 different crofting townships dotted around Staffin Bay and the Trotternish Ridge. They have the good fortune to live in an area which has a range of top-tier heritage and environmental designations, possessing an international reputation for geology, palaeontology and cultural heritage. It is the purpose of this project to bring all these aspects of this community to life through the stories and experiences of the people of Staffin. The Skye Ecomuseum, also known as ‘Ceumannan,’ is a museum without walls. All the exhibits are located in its environment and require a short walk to uncover their images and stories. It was established in 2008 by the Staffin Community Trust (SCT). The Skye Ecomuseum became the first in Scotland and the UK, with funding from a variety of European and national sources, including the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), 10 years ago. With its other title, Ceumannan, ‘footsteps’ in Gaelic, the project is estimated to have helped attract thousands of extra visitors annually to Staffin and encouraged them to stay longer, boosting the local economy as a result.
