Årg. 89 (2013) Sensing More in Ancient Religion SUSAN HARVEY Susan Ashbrook Harvey is professor of Religious Studies at Brown University, Rhode Island. She specializes in Syriac studies, Christianity in late antiquity, and Christian- ity of the Byzantine and Syriac traditions. She has published widely in academic venues on women in ancient Christianity, monasticism, the cult of saints, hagiog- raphy, hymnography, and religion and the senses. Her latest work includes Song and Memory: Biblical Women in Syriac Tradition (2010) and Scenting Salvation: An- cient Christianity and the Olfactory Imagination (2006). Prof. Harvey is currently working on a new book tentatively titled Teaching Women: Biblical Women and Women’s Choirs in Syriac Tradition. In this essay I offer reflections on the importance I. Secularisation and Ecumenism as Challenges “Secularisation” is a concept that is used in many different ways. By secularisation one may, for example, mean a process through which the state ceases to legislate on the basis of religious faith and instead does so on the basis of what is commonly acknowledged. Or a process through which the state ceases to grant special privileges to religious bodies and stops supporting for instance religion ‑based education. Or a pro‑ cess meaning that people cease to hold religious beliefs and uphold reli‑ gious practices. Or transfer of properties from religious or ecclesiastical to civil possession. Or a change meaning that society is no longer under the control of religion. If secularisation means that a society frees itself from coercion or even tyranny of religion over the conscience of individuals, then secu‑ larisation must be valued positively from a Christian point of view. Because of this impact CSE understands itself as a critical discipline and connected to political philosophy. The text illustrates the diferent areas and questions in the diferent departments that teaches CSE. It depicts also topics that will be important for the future of CSE, e. g. Environmental ethics, research of human rights, dialogue between Christian, muslim and jewish ethics, and the role of religion in post- secular society. Ethical research in Sweden is conducted at state universities. Like any other research discipline it has to meet the criterion of intersubjective testability.

    THE SIGNIFICANCE OF LUTHER FOR TO-DAY! THE greatness of Martin Luther has never been in dispute amongst the informed, but nowadays we are realizing just how great he was. The full range of his significance is emerging into view. The Luther we have known in the past was too small. He was cast into a mould too narrow to contain him. He was regarded primarily and almost exclusively as a prophet soul who recalled a wicked generation to God. He was the monk who shook the world by challenging the embattled might of Rome. Yet, however stirring and impressive was this version of the pioneer reformer, it involved certain limitations. It implied that Luther was a fighter rather than a thinker: that his deeds were more important than his doctrines. His theological contribution was seriously under-estimated. Consequently his relevance for to-day was largely overlooked. We admittedly basked in the benefit of what he had done, but what he said lacked the Kierkegaardian grace of contemporaneity. His was not a living voice. That view of Luther held the field almost without question until very recent years. In this country it still predominates, although, particularly since the War, the" new look" Luther is beginning to be appreciated. But a veritable Luther re­ nascence has taken place in the world of scholarship which has restored the reformer to his rightful place on the theological map. This rediscovery is one of the highlights of our era. As we might expect, this modern Luther revival began in his native land of Germany itself.
