A Life in the Shadow of the Bomb I am a child of the atomic age. The atomic bomb, that is, the threat of nuclear war and mass destruction, has been in my consciousness—sometimes in the background but frequently in the foreground—nearly all of my life. I was born on August 9, 1945 at the Lying Inn Hospital of the University of Chicago, the day that the second atomic bomb was dropped in Japan on the city of Nagasaki, killing tens of thousands of people. My birthplace, the U of C, was also the birthplace of the atomic bomb, which had been conceived there a couple of years before. Enrico Fermi and other scientists in the Manhattan Project carried out the first chain reaction on December 2, 1942 in a secret laboratory hidden in the university’s football stadium. Of course, when I let out my first shriek at the shock of birth and the awakening into life, I knew nothing of any of that. I first became conscious of the issue of nuclear war when I was eight years old. My parents had moved to Whittier, California, where my father was to manage a Co-op Grocery Store. The local public elementary school that I attended held “duck-and-cover” drills and we students had to get under our desks and put our hands over our heads. We were told this would protect us in the event of a nuclear attack. A duck-and-cover pubic service announcement of the era shows, among other scenarios, an elementary school class much like mine. -

PA: Pat Arrowsmith. Interviewer: How's that spelt? PA: Well, Pat is P-A-T, it's not short for Patricia, I was christened Pat by two bishops, one of whom arrived late for the event, and Arrowsmith as, most inappropriate for a peace activist, 'arrow' as the arrows that you shoot, and 'smith' - all the same word, Arrowsmith. Interviewer: Thank you. And please could I get you to say your date of birth for the tape? PA: 2nd March, 1930. Interviewer: Thank you. Um and I'm interviewing Pat for the After Hiroshima Project, er for London Bubble Theatre Company. Um so Pat, just to start in 1945, um what are your memories of the Second World War? PA: Um I don't have any (1.00) very grisly memories, my father was a vicar who travelled around doing dif, different parishes, and happenstance in 1939 when World War Two broke out he was scheduled to go to Torquay anyway, so we moved from where we had been living er further up the coast at Weston-super-Mare to Torquay, in time to arrive there for the outbreak of er, fairly soon after we got there, World War Two, which er was er... Oh well no wait a moment, we got there in 1939, ‘40. -

At 55, The Peace Symbol Endures. Peace, Not So Much By Bill Berkowitz (Dedicated to my grandson Alton Theodore Berkowitz-Gosselin and to all the children who will be inheriting a world hungry for peace.) The peace symbol is arguably the world’s most widely recognized protest symbol. In 2008, on the occasion of its fiftieth birthday, BBC News noted that the peace symbol has been “adapted, attacked and commercialized.” At fifty-five, the peace symbol remains a cultural icon, but as it ages, is it more than that? Originally created as a symbol for the British anti-nuclear movement, it is now ubiquitous: appearing at thousands of anti-nuclear and anti-war protests; adorning posters, buttons, badges, and peace flags; becoming a fixture on postal stamps; and, decorating clothing, beach towels, jewelry, and people’s skin. “Walk through the halls of any elementary or junior high school and you'll see the peace sign all over in kids' fashion, young girls especially - t-shirts, shorts, shoes, backpacks, earrings, pendants,” Peace Talks radio pointed out on its website a while back. The peace symbol was first seen in public on Good Friday in 1958 when thousands of British anti-nuclear campaigners – organized by the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War (DAC) and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) -- marched 50 miles from London's Trafalgar Square to the weapons factory at Aldermaston. When Gerald Holtom, a British designer and former World War II conscientious objector, sat down at his drawing board fifty-five years ago, he was in almost total despair. -

Page 1 Of 333 Page 2 Of 333 Abstract This thesis is a study of the ‘race relations’ work of Christians in the sixties in England, with specific reference to a Methodist church in Notting Hill, London. As such, it is also a study of English racisms: how they were fought against and how they were denied and facilitated. Additionally, the thesis pays attention to the interface of ‘religion’ and politics and the radical restatement of Christianity in the sixties. Despite a preponderance of sociological literature on 'race relations' and 'religion' in England, there has been a dearth of historical studies of either area in the post-war period. Therefore, this thesis is an important revision to the existing historiography in that it adds flesh to the bones of the story of post-war Christian involvement in the politics of 'race', and gives further texture and detail to the history of racism, 'race relations', and anti-racist struggles in England. -

The Peace Sign As a Fashion Icon
Raudenbush 1 Peace in Our Time: The Peace Sign as a Fashion Icon Rachel Raudenbush Abstract It is the Summer of Love, or so says Macy’s Department Store in their current advertising campaign and window displays. Young people may not be flocking to Haight-Ashbury, but they are converging on retailers in search of a different sort of peace. Peace sign apparel has inundated the fashion industry, appearing as everything from diamond necklaces to baby socks. But do modern consumers understand the symbol’s message? By tracking the evolution of the peace sign from its origins as a symbol of protest to its current position as a mass-marketed fashion icon, this paper aims to answer that question. Introduction Walking down Market Street in central Philadelphia, it is difficult not to notice the presence of the peace sign. The figure looms from massive wooden symbols in Macy’s department store windows to diminutive denim versions on the pockets of a teenager’s jeans. Recently, the icon has become a fashion darling, appearing on apparel, in advertisements, and throughout visual displays. It is perhaps ironic that in a country involved in a foreign war, deploying additional troops in Afghanistan, and continually manufacturing nuclear weapons, it has become nearly impossible to avoid the universal sign for peace. This begs the question, has the peace sign lost its meaning and become a mere fashion symbol? By tracking the evolution of the sign from its origins as a symbol of protest to its current position as a mass-marketed fashion icon, this paper aims to provide an answer. -

Shandley Head of Department, David Vaught August 2015 Major Subject: History Copyright 2015 Jared Ryan Donnelly ABSTRACT In the years following WWII, the West German peace movement emerged from its dormancy, developed into a popular movement, rose to challenge the policy of the government, and changed the character of West German society. The development of peace activism in postwar West Germany was a process that required the efforts of people willing to push the boundaries of the normal spheres of political life. The training ground for many of these peace activists was the West German conscientious objection (CO) movement. By studying their learning process as they rediscovered pacifist traditions as well as the organizations and the transnational networks they cultivated, we can learn a great deal about the foundations of the protest movements of the late 1960s. This dissertation examines the origins and activities of the early West German CO protest groups and problematizes the role of these groups in the early West German peace movement. The groups were an integral part of the broader German peace movement and frequently participated in peace demonstrations both nationally and internationally. The organizational development of the CO groups in the 1950s and early 1960s laid the groundwork for the emergence of larger and more popular protest movements that played major roles in the turbulent late 1960s.
