  • Prose Supplement 7 (2011) [Click for Pdf]
PS edited by Raymond Friel and Richard Price number 7 Ten Richard Price It’s ten years since I started Painted, spoken. Looking back over the issues of the magazine, two of the central patterns were there from the word go. They’re plain as day in the title: the fluid yet directing edge poetry shares with the visual arts, and, somewhere so far in the other direction it’s almost the same thing, the porous edge poetry shares with sound or performance, so porous you can hear it in its hollows. Although the magazine grew out of serial offences in little magazineship, the first impulse was to be quite different formally from Gairfish, Verse, and Southfields, each of which had placed a premium on explanation, on prose engagement, and on the analysis of the cultural traditions from which the poems they published either appeared to emerge or through which, whatever their actual origins, they could be understood. Painted, spoken would be much more tight-lipped, a gallery without the instant contextualisation demanded by an educational agenda (perhaps rightly in a public situation, but a mixed model is surely better than a constant ‘tell-us-what-to-think’ approach and the public isn’t always best served by conventional teaching). Instead, poems in Painted, spoken would take their bearings from what individual readers brought to the texts ‘themselves’ - because readers are never really alone - and also from the association of texts with each other, in a particular issue and across issues. The magazine went on its laconic way for several years until a different perspective began to open up, a crystal started to solidify, whatever metaphor you’d care to use for time-lapse comprehension (oh there’s another one): in management-speak, significant change impressed on the strategy and the strategy needed to change.

It is a cultural analysis of Morgan's poetry as representation of the Scottish people. ' Morgan's poetry represents the Scottish people as determined and persistent in dealing with life's adversities while maintaining hope in a better future This hope, according to Morgan, is largely associated with the advent of technology and the more modern landscape of his native Glasgow.

  • It's Dark, It's Snowing, and It's Very Cold
What is Ashbourne Football? By Simon Sanada It’s dark, it’s snowing, and it’s very cold. In the corner of a muddy field a group of men in dirty clothes stand holding onto each other tightly. There must be about twenty of them, and they are hardly moving. There is an occasional shout, and some pushing and shoving. Then it becomes quiet again. Around the group of men are scattered another thirty or forty people who stand there watching. Some of them are carrying torches. More than a mile away across the snowy fields can be seen the lights of a town, but the men continue playing their game in the dark. They are playing a traditional kind of football that is now very rare in Britain. Three or four hundred years ago, mass football was a common and popular sport. As towns and cities developed, and as the countryside was enclosed for agriculture, people lost the places where they had played their games. For this game is not played on a [1] Street Football pitch or in a sports ground. It was played through the streets of a town or across the fields around a village. [1] There were no fixed rules, and every game had its own different traditions and customs. Few of them survive today. One of the places where a game has continued for hundreds of years is Ashbourne,( [2] a small market town in the middle of England. In 2003 I spent a year living near Ashbourne, and I was able to watch the game in 2004.

  • Caithness and Sutherland Local Development Plan Report by Director of Development and Infrastructure
1 The Highland Council Agenda 9. Item Sutherland County Committee Report CC/ Caithness Committee No 16/16 30 August 2016 31 August 2016 Caithness and Sutherland Local Development Plan Report by Director of Development and Infrastructure Summary This report presents a summary of issues raised in comments received on the Proposed Caithness and Sutherland Local Development Plan (CaSPlan) and seeks approval for the Council’s response to these issues and next steps. In accordance with the Council’s Scheme of Delegation, the two Local Committees are asked to consider the report and decide on these matters. The recommended Council position is to defend the Proposed Plan, subject to only minor modifications, which would mean that the next stage would be submission to Ministers and progression to Examination. Other options would involve further consultation on a Modified Plan. The report explains the implications of each way forward. 1. Background 1.1 The Caithness and Sutherland Local Development Plan (CaSPlan) is the second of three area local development plans to be prepared by the Highland Council. Together with the Highland-wide Local Development Plan (HwLDP) and more detailed Supplementary Guidance, CaSPlan will form part of the Council’s Development Plan against which planning decisions will be made in the Caithness and Sutherland area. 1.2 The Proposed Plan consultation for CaSPlan ran from 22 January to 18 March 2016. Around 201 organisations or individuals responded, raising around 636 comments. This includes a few comments received on the associated Proposed Action Programme. All these comments have been published on the development plans consultation portal consult.highland.gov.uk.

  • Street Soccer
STREET SOCCER Street soccer, pick-up game, sandlot soccer or a kick-about whatever title you give to the format the idea is to give the game of soccer back to the players. Past generations learned to play the game on their own with other kids in the neighborhood or at school in these kid organized games. Today youth sports are overly adult controlled and influenced. It’s difficult today for youngsters to have a pick-up game since the streets have too many cars, the sandlot now has a mini- mall on it and parents are reluctant, with good cause, to let their child go blocks away from home on Saturday to play in a game on his or her own. Street soccer is a way for soccer clubs to give the game back to the players in the community. Once a week, or whatever frequency fits the circumstances the best, a club can have organized spontaneity. The club will provide the fields and supervision. Adults will be on site for safety and general supervision, but otherwise it is all up to the players to organize the games. The adults should NOT coach, cheer, criticize, referee or in any other way involve themselves in the game. The best bet for parents is to drop off their child, go run some errands, and then come back to pick up your child an hour or two latter. The coaches are on site NOT to coach, but to supervise, be on hand for any serious injuries and any severe discipline problems. Additionally the coaches are there to provide the game equipment and to let the players know when each game segment starts and stops.
