Abbotskerswell Cricket Club CHAMPIONS After 18 league games Abbots 1st XI triumphed by being crowned B Division Champions following on from last season’s winning of the C Division. This young side has shown a real togetherness and it really has been an all round team performance that has led to their deserved success. August proved the decisive month as three crucial victories led to promotion being achieved in the penultimate match. Against the then league leaders, Jimmy Fulner scored 98 and Tom Kiely 73 as Abbots posted 246 for 9. In response Bideford collapsed for 161 with Noah Tobias the leading bowler with 3 for 23. An even more emphatic victory by 176 runs came against . This was evidence of the all round team effort with several significant contributions – Alex Birt 61, Charlie Mitchell 61, Elliott Adams 48, Charlie Hill 45, Tom Kiely 3 for 22 and Connor Adams 3 for 25. The must win game was at Two Mile Oak against promotion rivals Tavistock. Charlie Mitchell’s 73 led the way to a total of 190. Tavistock never gave up and kept coming back into the game before the last wicket fell on 179 for an 11 run win and guaranteed promotion. Tom Kiely again led the way with 5-40 ably abetted by some excellent catching and fielding. The final match was rather an anti-climax. Abbots only managed 152 (Charlie Hill 36, Charlie Mitchell 34) and local rivals Ipplepen won comfortably by 4 wickets despite Elliott Adams taking 3 for 45. How ironic that the chief destroyer for Ipplepen was former Abbots stalwart Marcus Green who took wickets and scored vital runs. Nevertheless, there was a happy outcome as Bideford also lost to ensure Abbots were champions. The final table was:

Abbots had a settled team for the season and relied for much of the season on just 12 players two of whom missed the final match. Congratulations to them all on what they have achieved for the club.

Other cricket The 2nd XI in comparison continued to struggle in the A Division. With several players away on holidays sides were not always as competitive as the club would have liked especially in a tough division. A heavy defeat to Bideford by 139 runs saw promising colt Charlie Smout-Cooper take 4 for 33 and top score with 24 and he deserved promotion to Fund-raising and Social events the 1st XI for a couple of games. Another closer defeat by 4 wickets came against Ottery St Mary before the final match Thanks again for those who have supported our car boot against Paignton who were already champions of the sales. August Bank Holiday was particularly kind to us with a division. Paignton were held to 246 for 5 after a late flurry bumper crowd on a pleasant morning. Sadly the cold and of runs and Abbots did well to reach 149 with Toby Lovell wet September put paid to the Sunday September boot last man out unfortunately for 49 trying to score his half sale. The ground staff under the eagle eye of Chairman Paul century. All this meant that Abbots finished 8th out of ten Mitchell have carried out the end of season work on the teams and will be relegated. square which just goes to show that there never really is an off season. Nevertheless there will be a break from Celebrations playing until the indoor cricket league starts and we are all looking forward with anticipation to what 2018 The youngsters had a highly successful presentation brings. Details of club activities are on our website evening towards the end of August at which awards were www.abbotskerswellcc.com or you can contact the made to the many enthusiastic and talented colts within Chairman Paul Mitchell ([email protected]) or the club. Many proud parents came along and made it a Vice Chairman Richard Codd ([email protected]) to memorable occasion. Thanks again to Colts Coordinator discuss any matters. The Seniors’ presentation meal is taking place the day after I write so Andy Rose hopefully I can publish the winners of trophies in the next 01626-351886 issue.

FINANCIAL PLANNING IS COMPLEX

Broadly defined as making decisions about money to help individuals meet certain goals and aspirations over the lifetime, planning is a continuing process of anticipating and adapting to changes in personal circumstances over the long term. But we are not programmed to think long term, preferring rewards today over larger rewards tomorrow, and switching off in the face of complexity.

Given that our lives are so full of other activities, most people are likely to need help with financial planning from those who are qualified to give it. Unfortunately, many do not seek financial advice – only 16.8% of people saw an adviser between 2012–2014. A recent report found that even amongst those who took out an investment product in the last few years, nearly half failed to see a financial adviser. It is worrying that so few fail to seek advice before taking out an investment product, where capital could be at risk.

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON INCOME PROTECTION

When it comes to insurance, we’re often quick to protect our cars, houses or contents as the consequences of not doing so can be serious. However, some of us don’t think about insuring the very thing that allows us to afford these things, our financial wellbeing, meaning many remain unprotected.

Many consumers are unaware as to their financial situation should they be unable to work long-term. Nowhere is this clearer than with Statutory Sick Pay (SSP). Recent research showed that employees grossly overestimated the value of SSP (which was £88.45 as of April 2016) by an average of 62%. Three quarters (76%) of employees thought that SSP was £100 or more per week, and 15% even thought it was over £200.

Once these employees were aware of the realities of SSP, three quarters of them said they would only last at most one month before having to cut back on monthly outgoings. This is where income protection plans come in to play, helping to provide the financial security families need by paying out a monthly benefit should they be unable to work due to an accident or long-term illness.

Without such a policy in place, and in many cases without the savings to provide a financial safety net, managing a household’s expenses can turn into a cause of constant worry and stress.

There are several myths about protection policies not paying out but in 2016 one insurer, Legal & General, paid out on 94.4% of all income protection claims to a value of £1.2 million. There are also misconceptions about the cost of income protection, which most people consider as expensive and unnecessary but there are lower cost, 2-year income protection plans available which may suit most individuals.

It is important therefore that you consider the financial impact a loss of income could have on your own individual lifestyle should you remain unprotected. Should you require individual and expert financial advice please contact David Hedge on 01626 360654.

I am writing to say how proud I am of my wonderful granddaughter. Ashleigh came back from school one day saying she wanted to raise money for the Little Princess Trust. This is a charity that raises money for children who have lost their hair through illness. The way she was planning to do this was by being sponsored to have her waist length hair cut. Now Ashleigh loves her long hair so I was really surprised by her decision to cut it. Not only was she cutting her hair she was also donating it to be used to make into wigs for the children. Ashleigh went to Sharon at Hair Cair in the village and asked her to do this. She then went about getting sponsors through a just giving page. Eventually the day came for the cut. See pictures. I think Sharon was as nervous as Ashleigh, in the end her hair was cut wrapped up and sent off. Ashleigh had a great new hairstyle and had also raised £300 for the Little Princess Trust which is approximately what it costs for the charity to make each wig. She is now growing her hair again but I think she has done a wonderful caring thing which we are all extremely proud of. Linda Banks 27
