The village allotment association were pleased to help our harvest festival at St. Mary’s on 29th September.

Although it was the end of season, allotment holders managed enough produce to make up five boxes. A big thanks to all involved.

After the service, the boxes went to HITS, to help feed those in need locally.

AbbPast : The History Group of Abbotskerswell AbbPast Extras – Odle Hill House

In our Abbotskerswell Village History Series publication ‘2. Houses and Families’ we highlighted Odle Hill House as one of the village’s interesting houses. Recently some fascinating documents were loaned to us by Hugh Painter which greatly add to our knowledge about this imposing house. Our booklet entry was largely based on what the 1851 and 1861 Censuses did, and didn’t, tell us about the house and its construction, here we can add considerably more.

In 1794 the fields where the house would be built were owned by John Garratt and it was noted that on the site were a messuage tenement1, where he lived, and a linhay2. There were also two other dwellings where Thomas Marling and James Clansey lived. In 1803 George Ley, who would own a good deal of the village’s land, acquired the fields. However, in 1837 he sold much of his land to John Crossman, a Cockington cooper, keeping the six acres of this site, with villager Thomas Elliot leasing the fields. In 1858 Crossman, then described as a merchant, took out a mortgage for £500 and in November of that year we learn that a dwelling house and farm buildings had been erected by him on the site, with This copy of the Abbotskerswell Tithe Map of 1839 the Elliot family still the tenants. It seems likely the mortgage was drawn by John Somers-Cocks. was to pay for the construction costs of what was being

called The Park Tenement. In 1862 Crossman sold the land and his “messuage and tenement” to Edward Palk for £1 090. The Palks were butchers and were living in the village at Laburnum Farm, before buying Odle Hill House. This was a substantial residence for Abbotskerswell at that time with a hall, dining room, two sitting rooms, kitchen, scullery, four bedrooms, a bathroom and WC. Importantly in its yard were slated piggeries, a poultry house and a three bay brick/stone linhay with loft; this was perfect for his trade as a farming butcher. The Palks would own the house until 1948, although the last Palk in the village, John, had built and moved to live in Ashley Priors from 1932.

This photograph of the rear of Odle Hill House, whilst not doing justice to the pleasing Georgian style front (which is rather spoilt by a tree) does show the linhay mentioned above. A number of the out buildings were used by the Palks in their butchery business and they also added Westbury House in the grounds for family use; his was built in Long Orchard during the 1890s.

Happy Birthday Chordettes!

Abbotskerswell based choir the Chordettes Acappella Chorus recently celebrated their 45th birthday in style with an afternoon barbeque held at Hearn Field overlooking the Teign Estuary. The views were spectacular despite the inclement weather, and with tables groaning with food plus a barbeque supplied by Stuart and Simon from the Woodlands Café we certainly enjoyed ourselves.

Competition Time After a busy summer of concerts, coaching sessions and being the clean-up Chordettes 45th Party crew plus performing at Abbfest on the Sunday, the chorus turned our attention to working hard towards performing at the annual Convention of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers on 26th October. Having perfected moves and costumes the last step before heading off to Llandudno was our Dress Rehearsal at the Village Hall on Weds 16th October. Friends and family came along to see us put the final touches to our performance, by running through our competition pieces and singing a few of our repertoire songs to keep the audience entertained. We will let you know how we got on in the next edition!

The Poppy Field – a story by Pam Wakeham

The guns had gone quiet now as darkness closed in. Fred was waiting and ready to go over the top, into no-man’s land. There were a lot of dead soldiers between the two opposing armies but also a few injured, of which Fred was focussed on one in particular. It was his Captain, the same age as Fred, 19 years and from the Manor House in his own village. He wasn’t built for the rough and tumble of being a soldier but insisted it was his duty and now he lay with two smashed legs. Fred was determined to rescue him. It was his duty as a fellow villager. He had a route planned out. There was a small ridge of rock and gorse near the Captain and Fred was level with the end of it. He had two mates waiting to grab them if successful. The moon wasn’t very bright, with fast moving patchy clouds, but a noisy breeze was very helpful. When it was dark enough Fred crawled over the top of the trench and slithered foot by foot towards his Captain. Now and then he had to move a dead arm or leg out of the way. He reached the end of the ridge and whispered “Captain, Sir” “Who are you?” came a quiet reply. “Fred Sir, from the village, come to get you Sir”. “My legs are shot up” was the answer. “I can take you Sir” said Fred. He crawled forwards, got the Captain’s arms and heaved backwards. It was very awkward but bit by bit he heaved him behind the ridge. The Captain had passed out now with the pain so Fred rolled him over sat him up and draped him over his shoulders. It was an awful struggle to get up but Fred managed it. He had lined up two trees against the night sky line, so as quickly as possible he started out with about 500 yards in the open to go. The night did it’s best to help with the noise from the wind. When the clouds parted and let the moonlight through, Fred stood still, but at least it showed him where the dead lay. Nearer and nearer to the trenches he got and eventually he heard his mates whisper “We can see you”. He sank to his knees and the Captain was lifted off his back and on to a makeshift stretcher made of branches tied together with boot laces now unneeded by the dead. Fred rolled over gasping with the effort. “Good on yah!” said his mates, patting him on the shoulder. Brushing himself down the next morning, Fred found his pockets were full of poppy petals, broken off as he had crawled across the field. Several years later, after the war, Fred was at a Remembrance Day parade and watched proudly as three rows of wheelchairs advanced. The one on the end of one line suddenly stopped and a voice said “Fred, is that you?” It was his Captain, now with no legs, just stumps. It was a very emotional reunion which took place an hour or so later as Fred was introduced to the Captain’s parents. “We looked for you when it was all over” they said “but with no success and we feared the worst.” “I stayed where we landed, helping in the military hospital” replied Fred “but I am so pleased to see the poppies, as the field we crossed that night was covered with them.” Then they all shook hands and headed home. Fred always grew the Flanders Poppies in his cottage garden after that. They represented loyalty and duty to one’s friends and country and Fred agreed with that. VILLAGE HALL VOICE DATES FOR YOUR DIARY 16TH NOV – BRIAN NEWTON ANTIQUE DAY – 11am – 3pm 19TH NOV – WEEKLY ZUMBA CLASS BEGINS – 6.15 – 7.15PM 22ND NOV – JAZZ CAFE ORGANISED BY VILLAGE TWINNERS 10TH DEC – VILLAGE HALL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – 7pm 7TH & 8th DEC – CHRISTMAS MARKET 16TH DEC – CONCERT BY CHOIR 86 As you will see by the advert in this month’s issue we have the Village Hall AGM on 10th November at 7pm and we would love to see some new faces at the meeting. Please note this date has been amended from the previous one advertised. If you have any questions about the hall or Project Heat Kitchen Extension come along. We will have the plans available for viewing.

Although we have recently had a new member to the committee, we would welcome a few more people who could offer help and support to the hall. Our meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month and are about an hour long. Perhaps the Garden Show which is a subsidiary committee of the Village Hall is more your cup of tea and you would like to get involved. Either way please come along to the AGM or contact me prior to the meeting so I can answer any questions.

End of season celebration

After an exciting season with some ups and downs the club was able to celebrate a successful conclusion withits presentation evening. The first team were led by Nick Watkin who found great form with the bat in the second half of the season. He also brought the team together in a positive way to ensure they avoided relegation. Young opening bowler Elliott Adams, who has represented Devon, showed maturity in leading the attack. Their efforts are reflected inthe trophies presented.

First team awards Nick Watkin Batsman of the year – Nick Watkin Bowler of the year – Elliott Adams Fielder of the year – Elliott Adams First team players player of the year – Nick Watkin

Tom Heath captained the seconds to promotion in some style with major contributions from several players especially the batsmen. The star individual turn was Jay Hussain’s 168 from 87 balls against Elliott Adams Plympton, though there were a few who made their debut centuries during the season. The decisions were tough but in the end recipients of trophies were:

Winter programme

In late September a team of volunteers worked hard on the ground to repair and revive it in readiness for 2020. While some players are resting others are playing in the Torbay indoor league, while others are organising some indoor practice sessions. The club will be arranging some club adult and junior sessions in the New Year so watch for details. In the meantime conversations are going on to seek out recruitments that can revitalise the sides in readiness for the challenges a new season presents. Our club AGM is on Wednesday 13 November at 7:00pm in the clubhouse. If you want to find out more about what is happening and our plans for the future come along and listen, even if you are not in a position to vote. We value your support and any suggestions you may have. Jay Hussain Andy Rose 01626-351886

Advertising feature Make 2020 a less taxing year The run-up to the end of the tax year provides ‘use it or lose it’ opportunities to help secure your financial future and pay less tax on the inheritance you leave your loved ones. Well over a decade since the financial crisis, the world is still a very uncertain place. Despite this, investors have enjoyed the benefits of a strong run by stock markets around the world, coupled with continuing low volatility1.

However, it would be wrong to believe that market shocks are a thing of the past. From uncertainty over Brexit to trade wars, there are many risks that pose a challenge to investors now; and any number of unforeseen factors in the years to come.

But these are beyond our control; they cannot be allowed to prevent us from planning our financial futures. Indeed, we will give ourselves the best chance of achieving our financial goals if we focus on what we can control: how and where we invest our money, how much tax we pay, the size of our retirement fund, and how much of our estate passes to our family free of Inheritance Tax.

ISAs – ISAs have become one of the most popular ways to save, principally because they are simple and readily accessible. The substantial increase in the ISA allowance to £20,000 was a very welcome step in encouraging individuals to invest for their future. However, as interest rates in the UK remain near record lows, money being held in Cash ISAs is failing to achieve the very basic objective of keeping pace with inflation. The result is real losses for savers.

Those who are investing their ISA allowance for the long term – in assets offering the scope for attractive levels of income and capital growth – are giving themselves a better chance of maximising the tax-saving opportunities on offer.

Individuals yet to use their ISA allowance, or with accumulated ISA savings, need to carefully consider their options to ensure that they are maximising this valuable opportunity to generate tax-efficient capital and income for the future.

Pensions – Saving into a pension is an even more attractive prospect than it was a few years ago because there is much greater freedom for taking benefits; and pension savings can now be more easily left as part of a tax-free inheritance. However, the advantages extend further than just drawing benefits and passing money on to loved ones: the government still rewards savers by giving them tax relief on their pension contributions. For every £1 you contribute to a pension, the government automatically adds 25p in tax relief. Higher earners can claim extra tax relief through their annual tax return, meaning that a £1 pension contribution can effectively cost just 60p.

While tax relief encourages pension saving, the annual cost to the Exchequer of providing it is around £38 billion2. With the government under increasing pressure to reduce public spending, there’s no guarantee that the higher rates of tax relief will be maintained into the future.

Those wishing to make their retirement plans a reality should consider fully utilising their annual allowance for this tax year to make the most of the tax breaks on offer. Unused allowances can be carried forward, but only from the three previous tax years. This financial year is the final chance for pension savers to use the allowance for 2016/17: if not used by 5 April 2020, it is lost forever.

Inheritance Tax – There are few more confusing – or unpopular – taxes than IHT. But continued confusion and inertia means that the Office for Budget Responsibility expects to see a 19% increase in IHT revenues over the next four years3. However, there are several exemptions that allow individuals to reduce future bills. Perhaps the best known is the annual gifting allowance, which gives individuals the opportunity to remove £3,000 of assets from their estate immediately (£6,000 if they use the previous year’s allowance as well).

Taking steps to reduce your taxable estate by topping up a child’s pension or Junior ISA could go a long way to providing them with an invaluable head start in life. Make this year’s £3,000 gifting allowance count – and carry forward last year’s, if you haven’t used it already.

Effective financial planning should be a year-round activity. Valuable reliefs and allowances can help to create long-term financial security for ourselves and our family.
