Plot [ edit | edit source ] The daemon-sultan Azathoth leads an extra-dimensional host in a war against the forces of light. Controversy [ edit | edit source ] For many years, this novel was sold as being an "unfinished" novel by H.P. Lovecraft, when in fact it was wholly written, barring perhaps one page worth of notes, by August Derleth. It also introduces the entirely Derlethian idea that the Great Old Ones and Outer Gods are Satanic or evil, opposing other forces such as the Elder Gods which are a priori good or servants of the light. This good versus evil concept is completely at odds with the nihilism of the original Lovecraft conceptualisation. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas on June 7 – 8, and the Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship, planned for the weekend of June 13 – 15. It will take place in Oakbrook, Illinois. Breakiron ONE-SHOT WONDERS By definition, fanzines are nonprofessional publications produced by fans of a particular cultural phenomenon, such as a literary or musical genre, for the pleasure of others who share their interests. Readers themselves often contribute to fanzines by submitting their own articles, reviews, letters of comment, and fan fiction. Though the term fanzine only dates from 1940 when it was popularized within science fiction and comic book fandom, the first fanzines actually date back to at least the nineteenth century when, as a uniquely American development, literary groups formed amateur press associations or APAs in order to publish collections of poetry, fiction, and commentary. Few, if any, writers have had as many fanzines, chapbooks, and other ephemera dedicated to them as has Robert E. Howard. Howard himself self-published his own typed “zine,” The Golden Caliph of four loose pages in about August, 1923 [1], as well as three issues of one entitled The Right Hook in 1925 (discussed later). Howard collaborated with his friends Tevis Clyde “Clyde” Smith, Jr., and Truett Vinson in their own zines, The All-Around Magazine and The Toreador respectively, in 1923 and 1925. (A copy of The All-Around Magazine sold for $911 in 2005.) Howard also participated in an amateur essay, commentary, and poetry journal called The Junto that ran from 1928 to 1930, contributing 10 stories and 13 poems to 10 of the issues that survive. Only one copy of this monthly “travelogue” was circulated among all the members of the group.

Arkham House was officially in business when August Derleth and Donald Wandrei signed the George Banta Publishing Company's "Proposal for Printing" THE OUTSIDER AND OTHERS by H. P. Lovecraft dated 25 August 1939. 1268 copies of this "landmark in the history of weird fiction and American publishing" (Joshi) were printed and most were sold for $5.00 each (then a high list price for a book of fiction). THE OUTSIDER AND OTHERS was the first of three projected volumes of Lovecraft's works Arkham House planned to publish. Derleth and Wandrei (with the considerable assistance of Robert H.     Pulp-related books and periodicals available from Mike Chomko for July and August 2019 Given that I’m writing these words in early September, I’m way behind on my bookselling chores. As I’ve relayed via email, between PulpFest 2019 and helping my wife with her mother — now in hospice care — this summer has been extremely busy. PulpFest is over for another year — actually eleven months, given the timing of this catalog. The convention’s organizing committee is already working on next year’s gathering. It will take place August 6 - 9 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Pittsburgh — Cranberry, located in Mars, Pennsylvania. PulpFest 2020 will focus on Bradbury, BLACK MASK, and Brundage. We may even throw in a touch of Brackett and Burroughs for good measure. In October, we’ll be announcing our very special guest of honor. Over the Labor Day weekend, Dianne and I drove to the Burlington area of Vermont to acquire a substantial collection of pulps, digests, vintage paperbacks, first edition hardcovers, underground comics, fanzines, and more. The primary focus of the magazine collection is the science fiction genre. There are also miscellaneous periodicals from the adventure, detective, hero, spicy, and war genres. The collection contains magazines in both the pulp and digest formats. The vintage paperbacks run the gamut of genres that are popular in that area of book collecting. PulpFest will begin selling the collection via auction during our 2020 convention. Given its size, it will take a number of years to disperse the entire collection. Now begins the difficult and time-consuming work of organizing, cataloging, lotting, and photographing the collection.

Breakiron FANDOM AT A CROSSROADS Fantasy Crossroads was a semi-pro publication that became the premier fantasy fanzine after the demise of Glenn Lord’s The Howard Collector in 1973. Edited and published by Jonathan Bacon quarterly over the last half of the 1970s, it ran 15 issues, plus one Special Edition. In the first issue, Bacon states: Fantasy Crossroads is not only the title of this fanzine, it’s also a statement of philosophy. The area of fantasy literature has been neglected either because of intellectual snobbery or because it was considered the realm of children. I will not attempt to rationalize fantasy literature as an area of great intellectual pursuit. Fantasy has always been an escape … and in high pressure, high tension times any escape mechanism which does not pervert the human spirit is welcome. On the other hand no one can deny that fantasy literature contains its share of classics. He goes on to say that the field includes Sword and Sorcery, epitomized by Robert E. Howard’s Conan, and is a grand field with plenty of territory to cover. Fantasy Crossroads intends to bring these areas together. We intend to be the crossroads where the various sectors of fantasy fandom gather to exchange their best works and criticize their worst. We hope to present more than just fan and pro work in these pages. We want to present not only the written work of Robert E. Howard (for example) but also background on the man from his letters and his friends.
