" went the warning in the old family manuscript that Ambrose Dewart discovered when he returned to his ancestral home in the deep woods of rural Massachusetts. Dewart's investigations into his family's sinister past eventually lead to the unspeakable revelations of The Great Old Ones who wait on the boundaries of space and time for someone to summon them to earth. Acclaimed cult horror writer H. P. Lovecraft's notes and outlines for this tale of uncanny terror were completed by August Derleth, his friend and future publisher. Of the many Lovecraft-Derleth "posthumous collaborations," The Lurker at the Threshold remains the most popular, having sold 50,000 copies in its previous edition alone. Bibliographic Details. Publisher's Introduction [ edit | edit source ] "He is not to open the door which leads to the strange time and place, nor to invite Him Who lurks at the threshold . Plot [ edit | edit source ] The daemon-sultan Azathoth leads an extra-dimensional host in a war against the forces of light. Controversy [ edit | edit source ] For many years, this novel was sold as being an "unfinished" novel by H.P. Lovecraft, when in fact it was wholly written, barring perhaps one page worth of notes, by August Derleth. It also introduces the entirely Derlethian idea that the Great Old Ones and Outer Gods are Satanic or evil, opposing other forces such as the Elder Gods which are a priori good or servants of the light. This good versus evil concept is completely at odds with the nihilism of the original Lovecraft conceptualisation. Although more recent editions have included the names of both Lovecraft and Derleth as authors, this is not how the work was originally sold or marketed. 9780786711888 - The Lurker at the Threshold by Lovecraft, H P ; Derleth, August.
