A selection of Japanese prints sets the stage for Arts & Crafts era works by Charles Bartlett, Elizabeth Colborne, Arthur Wesley Dow, Frances Gearhart, Edna Boies Hopkins, Bertha Lum and Margaret Jordan Patterson. Woodcuts by Helen Franken- thaler illuminate connections between Abstract Expressionism and Japanese art. Prints by Annie Bissett, Kristina Hagman, Ellen Heck, Tracy Lang, Eva Pietzcker and Roger Shimomura illustrate the ongo- ing allure of ukiyo-e as the basis for innovations in printmaking today. Chapter 6 Sir William Thomson, Baron Kelvin of Largs and the Institution of Engineering and Technology S. Hale Institution of Engineering and Technology, United Kingdom. Abstract Sir William Thomson, Baron Kelvin of Largs, was a member of the Society of Telegraph Engineers and the Institution of Electrical Engineers (the precursors of the current Institu- tion of Engineering and Technology) for 36 years. Elected as the President three times, Lord Kelvin’s involvement with the institution has had a lasting effect on the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). His bust (Fig. 1) is displayed at the IET’s London head- quarters at Savoy Place and his portrait hangs in the lecture theatre alongside those of other engineering luminaries such as Alessandro Volta and Michael Faraday. Every year, the IET also hosts a lecture in memory of Kelvin. This chapter will explore the background to the IET, the history of Kelvin’s relationship with the Institution and the impact that he had upon the Institution as a whole. 1 Introduction The history of the IET dates back to the late nineteenth century. It was founded on 17 May 1871 as the Society of Telegraph Engineers (STE), in response to the rapid development of a new communications technology, electrical telegraphy. 1.1 Early days of telegraphy Before the advent of electrical telegraphy, transmitting communications over long distances without the use of written correspondence relied on visual aids such as fire beacons, smoke signals and flags, and later, mechanised systems such as the semaphore system created by Claude Chappé in 1793 [1]. The idea of using electricity to send messages was first proposed in the 1750s [2] but it was not until the beginning of the nineteenth century that experiments began in earnest. -

Running concurrently with the Whitney Museum’s exhibition Making Knowing, which also features works by Shechet, Skirts brings together more than a dozen of the artist’s most recent sculptures, including large-scale works and a monumental outdoor piece, to be displayed on the second-floor galleries and terrace of Pace’s new flagship building at 540 West 25th street. Rich in idiosyncrasies, Shechet’s latest pieces combine disparate mediums, from ceramics to wood and metalwork, with playfully ambiguous titles that prompt endless associations. Utilizing a title that is both a noun and a verb, Skirts is a testament to the artist’s fluid and unformulaic process. Though her works appear effortless and forgiving of imperfections, they are the belabored products of an intuitive and technically fastidious approach, involving casting, painting, firing, carving, stacking, undoing and redoing with no predetermined endpoint. Her expansive approach to sculpture and materials is reminiscent of artists Shechet admires, such as Sophie Taeuber- Arp and Sonia Delaunay, whose work transcends the divisions of painting and sculpture and encompassed innovative multimedia practices, distinguishing their work from that of their male peers. Shechet’s title, Skirts, also reclaims misogynist slang. -

(art)n WWW.ARTN.COM VIRTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY PHSCOLOGRAMS Museum News: Catalogue Features Museum Masterworks Winter 2005 In celebration of recent acquisitions and a stunning new facility, the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, in conjunction with the University of Oklahoma Press, is offering art lovers a catalogue featuring works from the museum’s rich and diverse permanent collection. Combining more than 270 full-color reproductions with explanatory text, the book highlights 101 of the museum’s most important holdings as well as related works by the artists and their peers. “This book celebrates one of the nation’s finest university art collections,” says Eric M. Lee, museum director and co- author with Rima Canaan, of Selected Works: The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma. “More than half of the featured works in the catalogue have been acquired by the museum in the past decade. With the new building opening in January, it is the perfect time to showcase our permanent collection. All at Once, a major, critically-acclaimed 20-year survey of Shechet’s work, was on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston in 2015. Sebastian Smee of The Boston Globe wrote: “It’s in the harmonies and tensions between these colors and textures, between suggestions of both order and anarchy, decay and blooming freshness, that these works cough, sputter, and sing. If they really are the great analogs to interior life that I feel them to be, it’s because Shechet knows that this life, expertly attended to, has its own folds and wrinkles, its own hollows and protuberances; that it is at once fugitive and monumental … and ultimately unknowable.” All at Once was also hailed by The New York Times as “some of the most imaginative American sculpture of the past 20 years, and Arlene Shechet some of the most radically personal.” In recent years, Shechet’s work has included historical museum installations. Porcelain, No Simple Matter: Arlene Shechet and the Arnhold Collection, on view at The Frick Collection from May Working Over Time : an artist’s talk 2016 to April 2017, is described in The New Yorker as “a balancing act of respectful and radical” with “whimsical beauty and deep smarts.” From Here on Now, Shechet’s solo museum exhibition at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., opens October 2016. -

Art/African American studies Art for People’s Sake for People’s Art REBECCA ZORACH In the 1960s and early 1970s, Chicago witnessed a remarkable flourishing Art for of visual arts associated with the Black Arts Movement. From the painting of murals as a way to reclaim public space and the establishment of inde- pendent community art centers to the work of the AFRICOBRA collective People’s Sake: and Black filmmakers, artists on Chicago’s South and West Sides built a vision of art as service to the people. In Art for People’s Sake Rebecca Zor- ach traces the little-told story of the visual arts of the Black Arts Movement Artists and in Chicago, showing how artistic innovations responded to decades of rac- ist urban planning that left Black neighborhoods sites of economic depres- sion, infrastructural decay, and violence.
