Jocelyn, 1828 Courtesy of New Hampshire State Library There are several conflicting accounts about the discovery of the Old Man of the Mountain, the earliest known dating from 1844. However, most of the accounts agree that the granite profile was first seen—other than presumably by Native Americans—around 1805 and that it was first noticed by members of a surveying party working and camping in Franconia Notch near Ferrin’s Pond (later renamed Profile Lake) and that just one or two members of the party happened to be in just the right spot, looking in just the right direction to see the remarkable face. In 1828, this engraving based on a sketch by “a gentleman of Boston” is the first known image of the natural profile. It was published in the American Journal of Science and Arts, making the natural wonder more widely known. Object Old Man of the Mountain, by Edward New Hampshire Historical Society Hill, 1879 1925.007.01 The White Mountains tourism boom of the nineteenth century came along with a demand from visitors for images that captured the places they had seen. During the 19th century, more than 400 artists painted White Mountain landscape scenes. Among them was Edward Hill (1843– 1923), who immigrated to New Hampshire from England as a child, bought land in Lancaster, NH, in the 1870s and established a reputation as a landscape painter. For 15 years he was the artist-in-residence at the famed Profile House, and it was during that time that he painted the Old Man of the Mountain. -

Because of space considerations Gary Smith’s ‘fleshing out’ of his museum project will be held over until next month. National Slate Museum/Dinorwic quarry/Llanberis Railway By way of introduction, at the turn of the twentieth century, Wales had two main industries – coal mining and slate extraction. At their peaks the former industry employed some 270000 people at 620 mines and the latter 17000. These quantities do not include the large numbers of people involved in the industries serving coal and slate – rail and ship transport etc. Apart from a few scattered operations involving small numbers, both industries have effectively closed. The effect on employment numbers and the communities that depended on them was catastrophic. Today Wales, particularly the western, middle and north areas, is one large recreation area for tourists. When I was there, not hundreds but thousands of people could be seen hiking and riding the many narrow gauge lines that exist in Wales and that was in April when there was still snow on the hilltops! In other words the death of traditional industries has been replaced with a vibrant new industry – tourism. 1 The National Slate Museum is located at Gilfach Ddu, Llanberis, in the disused workshops of the Dinorwic quarry. -

There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

Volume 18, Number 3 Fall 2003 Cape May Mini-Reunion A Hit More Than 100 CGCVA Members & Guests Enjoy Graduation & Tours A gorgeous sunny day and a “Welcome Coast Guard Combat Veterans” sign greeted the more than 100 CGCVA members and guests as they drove onto Coast Guard Recruit Training Center Cape May, New Jersey the morning of Friday, Sept. 26, 2003. An air of anticipa- tion grew for many of the visitors, some who had never been to the site of the Coast Guard’s only boot camp, and for those who had not been there in decades. Coast Guard personnel distinguished between the CGCVA visitors and arriving parents and friends of the graduating recruit companies, directing each to specific parking locations. From there it was on to the Harborview Lounge for registration, refreshments and introductions.
