Japan is shrouded in mystique and ancient history, and the perfect way to unravel this enigma is by exploring its landscape gardens. Their basic design is based on capturing the grace and beauty of nature and bringing it into daily life. As simplistic as this may sound, the true magnificence of Japanese gardens is profound. They create soulful, refined and elegant spaces, a humbleness surrounded by nature. Landscape gardening has been an art form in Japan for centuries. Their designs can be put into three distinctive groups, namely hill gardens, dry gardens and tea gardens and can include everything from courtyards to streams and basic, austere spaces to lush, tropical environments. Some are highly groomed, while others look almost wild. The general landscaping theme is based on the principle of minimalist simplicity, including understated contrasts in hues and textures of green, and a near flawless harmony with the elements. This accord is attained through repetition and a semblance of balance. Japanese gardens generally follow several basic design principles: they are hugely reduced in scale, they are enclosed, the angle of view is crucial, they borrow scenery, and they hold balance and symbolism. Most Japanese gardens endeavor to duplicate the environment in miniature. The Japanese garden is a work of living art and a reflection of the Japanese spirit. Nothing is left to chance; every living thing in a garden exists for a reason and stands as a symbol for something else in Japanese culture. A simple garden walkway could reveal to us a part of the richness of Japanese history or its metaphorical significance.

Looking for Experience During Winter Season in Okayama City “The Land of Sunshine” Heri Asriyadi 5th grade at Hasanuddin University (Indonesia) January 15th, 2018 ~ February 6th, 2018 Its an excellent opportunity to participate in this ODAPUS Program. So many people who apply on this program but in this year is my opportunity to become a delegate of my university. The initial expectation of this program is to know the technology of dentistry in japan which has been famous for its technological progress and also a very interesting Japanese culture. We start our journey from Makassar, Indonesia in the morning of January, 14th 2018 and arrived in Osaka on afternoon January 15th 2018. After our arrival in the airport, we can feel the Japanese environment which is famous for its orderly. And for the first time we felt a very cold temperature of -2 degrees. Of course that temperature is a cold temperature for Indonesians who have a long dry season and relatively hot. In airport many things very different from our country, like purchasing bus ticket by machine. And this is quite difficult for us who do not know japanese language at all, but the airport officer kindly helped us. We had to use bus to get to okayama. And travels approximately 3 hours. Although we feel very tired because of the long journey from Indonesia to Osaka, but during the journey to okayama my eyes can’t stop impressed the beauty of the night of the city. After 3 hours drive, finally we arrived at okayama station. feeling so happy beacuse we have been waited by sensei and professors from Okayama University, as well as friends who have followed ODAPUS to Indonesia.

The translation is based on the texts appearing in Meishôgenkôroku by Okanoya Shigezane (1835-1919), Iwanami Shoten, Tokyo, 1943. In translation, we placed family names first in the Japanese style. All the story titles and the information in the brackets and parentheses are supplied by the translators. Diacritics are deleted in popular place-names including Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kanto, Honshu, Kyushu. The glossary contains main terms related to the stories. For dates and years, the Gregorian calendar is used in place of the old Japanese way of calculation, as in 1596 for the first year of Keichô. Most of the illustrations come from the Ehon Taikôki written by Takeuchi Kakusai and illustrated by Okada Gyokusan (1797-1802) but was banned in 1804. The translators, Andrew H.
