Samuel Johnson, 1784 Bevezetés A jelen MagyarBangol Geológiai Szótár az 1995-ben megjelent AngolBmagyar Geológiai Szótár kiegészítésének készült. Címszóanyaga annak megfelelő, mintegy 17.000 szó és szókapcsolat. A két szótár egymásnak nem tükörképe: a magyar és az angol megfelelők esetenként jelentősen eltérő jelentéstani terjedelme miatt valamennyi szópárt manuális ellenőrzésnek kellett alávetni, szükség esetén módosítva a jelentést, törölve, ill. beillesztve szinonímákat. A szótár nemcsak a szélesebb értelemben vett földtan szókincsét tartalmazza, hanem azokat a szavakat is, amelyekkel egy geológus szak- munkákat olvasva találkozhat (laboratóriumi eszközök, terepmunka eszközei, geofizikai alapszókincs, mászaki szavak, mélyfúrási, bányászati terminológia, alapvetÅ matematikai, fizikai, kémiai, biológiai szókincs stb). Végül köszönetemet szeretném kifejezni lektoromnak, Papp Gábor 7 múzeumi tárigazgatónak, aki vállalta az angol helyesírás és a magyar megfelelÅk ellenÅrzésének hálátlan munkáját. • Glide and Screw
Space Groups •The 32 crystallographic point groups, whose operation have at least one point unchanged, are sufficient for the description of finite, macroscopic objects. •However since ideal crystals extend indefinitely in all directions, we must also include translations (the Bravais lattices) in our description of symmetry. Space groups: formed when combining a point symmetry group with a set of lattice translation vectors (the Bravais lattices), i.e. self-consistent set of symmetry operations acting on a Bravais lattice. (Space group lattice types and translations have no meaning in point group symmetry.) Space group numbers for all the crystal structures we have discussed this semester, and then some, are listed in DeGraef and Rohrer books and pdf. document on structures and AFLOW website, e.g. ZnS (zincblende) belongs to SG # 216: F43m) Class21/1 Screw Axes •The combination of point group symmetries and translations also leads to two additional operators known as glide and screw. •The screw operation is a combination of a rotation and a translation parallel to the rotation axis. •As for simple rotations, only diad, triad, tetrad and hexad axes, that are consistent with Bravais lattice translation vectors can be used for a screw operator. •In addition, the translation on each rotation must be a rational fraction of the entire translation. •There is no combination of rotations or translations that can transform the pattern produced by 31 to the pattern of 32 , and 41 to the pattern of 43, etc. •Thus, the screw operation results in handedness Class21/2 or chirality (can’t superimpose image on another, e.g., mirror image) to the pattern.

  • Basic Aspects of Fluorine in Chemistry and Biology
Introduction: Basic Aspects of Fluorine in Chemistry and Biology COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL 1 Unique Properties of Fluorine and Their Relevance to Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology Takashi Yamazaki , Takeo Taguchi , and Iwao Ojima 1.1 Fluorine - Substituent Effects on the Chemical, Physical and Pharmacological Properties of Biologically Active Compounds The natural abundance of fl uorine as fl uorite, fl uoroapatite, and cryolite is considered to be at the same level as that of nitrogen on the basis of the Clarke number of 0.03. However, only 12 organic compounds possessing this special atom have been found in nature to date (see Figure 1.1) [1] . Moreover, this number goes down to just fi ve different types of com- pounds when taking into account that eight ω - fl uorinated fatty acids are from the same plant [1] . [Note: Although it was claimed that naturally occurring fl uoroacetone was trapped as its 2,4 - dinitrohydrazone, it is very likely that this compound was fl uoroacetal- dehyde derived from fl uoroacetic acid [1] . Thus, fl uoroacetone is not included here.] In spite of such scarcity, enormous numbers of synthetic fl uorine - containing com- pounds have been widely used in a variety of fi elds because the incorporation of fl uorine atom(s) or fl uorinated group(s) often furnishes molecules with quite unique properties that cannot be attained using any other element. Two of the most notable examples in the fi eld of medicinal chemistry are 9α - fl uorohydrocortisone (an anti - infl ammatory drug) [2] and 5 - fl uorouracil (an anticancer drug) [3], discovered and developed in 1950s, in which the introduction of just a single fl uorine atom to the corresponding natural products brought about remarkable pharmacological properties.

The long held, but widely misunderstood distinc- tion between these two essentially parallel time scales has been rendered unnecessary by the adoption of the global stratotype sections and points (GSSP-golden spike) principle in defining intervals of geologic time within rock strata.” Our review of stratigraphic princi- ples, concepts, models and paradigms through history clearly shows that the GSL Proposal is flawed and if adopted will be of disservice to the stratigraphic community. We recommend the continued use of the dual stratigraphic terminology of chronostratigraphy and geochronology for the following reasons: (1) time-rock (chronostratigraphic) and geologic time (geochronologic) units are conceptually different; (2) the subtended time-rock’s unit space between its “golden spiked-marked”

URANINITE ALTERATION IN AN OXIDIZING ENVIRONMENT AND ITS RELEVANCE TO THE DISPOSAL OF SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL Robert Finch Rodney Ewing Department of Geology University of New Mexico Submitted to Svensk Kämbränslehantering AB (SKB) December 21,1990 ABSTRACT Uraninite is a natural analogue for spent nuclear fuel because of similarities in structure (both are fluorite structure types) and chemistry (both are nominally UOJ. Effective assessment of the long-term behavior of spent fuel in a geologic repository requires a knowledge of the corrosion products produced in that environment.

The image on the back cover is a stylized dendrogram of two, genus-level speciational bursts or dis- silience. Here, the dissilient genus is the basic evolutionary unit (see Plate 13.1). This evolutionary model is evident in analysis of the moss Didymodon (Chapter 8) through superoptimization.
