This phrase, “All Can Work,” and the lyrics in this title track are taken directly from the emails in my inbox from Laurie Frink, our beloved trumpeter, whom we lost in 2013. When I first moved to NYC and started playing with and hearing big bands, Laurie was a special thread that wove through them all—it seemed like she played in every band I saw! A master of the short, perfect email reply, Laurie was also the consummate team player, the type of personality that is profoundly needed in a large ensemble.

    Grace Theological Journal 9.1 (1988) 21-43 [Copyright © 1988 Grace Theological Seminary; cited with permission; digitally prepared for use at Gordon and Grace Colleges and elsewhere] THE VALIDITY OF HUMAN LANGUAGE: A VEHICLE FOR DIVINE TRUTH JACK BARENTSEN Doubts have arisen about the adequacy of human language to convey inerrant truth from God to man. These doubts are rooted in an empirical epistemology, as elaborated by Hume, Kant, Heidegger and others. Many theologians adopted such an empirical view and found themselves unable to defend a biblical view of divine, inerrant revelation. Barth was slightly more successful, but in the end he failed. The problem is the empirical epistemology that first analyzes man's relationship with creation. Biblically, the starting point should be an analysis of man's relationship with his Creator. When ap- proached this way, creation (especially the creation of man in God's image) and the incarnation show that God and man possess an adequate, shared communication system that enables God to com- municate intelligibly and inerrantly with man. Furthermore, the Bible's insistence on written revelation shows that inerrant divine communication carries the same authority whether written or spoken. * * * As a result of the materialistic, empirical scepticism of the last two centuries, many theologians entertain doubts about the ade- quacy of human language to convey divine truth (or, in some cases, to convey truth of any kind). This review of the philosophical and theological origins of the current doubts about language lays a foundation for a biblical view of language. THE CONTEMPORARY PROBLEM One recent writer stated the problem of the adequacy of religious language in these words: The problem of religious knowledge, in the context of contemporary philosophical analysis, is basically this: no one has any.

    Voices of Eternal Spring: A study of the Hingcun diau Song Family and Other Folk Songs of the Hingcun Area, Taiwan Submitted for PhD By Chien Shang-Jen Department of Music University of Sheffield January 2009 Chapter Four The Developmental Process and Historical Background of Hingcun Diau and Its Song Family Introduction The previous three chapters of this thesis detailed the three major systems of Taiwanese folksongs - Aboriginal, Holo and Hakka. Concentrating on the area of Hingcun, one of the primary cradles of Holo folksongs, these three chapters also explored how the geographical conditions, natural landscape, and historical and cultural background of the area influence local folksongs and what the mutual relations between these factors and the local folksongs are. Furthermore, the three chapters studied in depth not only the background, characteristics and cultural influences of each of the Hingcun folk songs but also local prominent folksong figures, major accompanying musical instruments, musical activities and so on. Chapter Four narrows the focus specifically to Hingcun diau and its song family. In this chapter, on the one hand, I examine carefully the changes in Hingcun diau and its song family activated from within a culture; on the other hand, I also pay attention to the changes in these songs caused by their contact with other cultures.1 In other words, in addition to a careful study of the origin, developmental process and historical background of Hingcun diau and its song family, I shall also dissect how the interaction of different ethnic groups, languages used in the area, political and economic factors, and various local cultures influence Hingcun diau and its song family, and what the mutual relations between the former factors and Hingcun diau and its song family are.

    MAGIJA VOKALA MEREDITH MONK Aleksandar Mihalyi Ako bi smo odabrali kreativno uspješnu i jedinstvenu skladateljicu i vokalisticu temeljem uspješnosti njezinog dosadašnjeg djelovanja te glasovnih mogućnosti koje izmiču uobičajenim klasifikacijama, onda bi se Meredith Jane Monk nametnula kao prvi izbor. Dodatni povod je i obilježavanje njezinog 70. rođendana ove godine – rođena je 1942. godine u New Yorku, SAD. Njezina pozicija vodeće umjetnice u američkoj avangardnoj glazbi traje od Karijeru je započela kasnih šezdesetih kao plesačica i koreograf kada je samih početaka minimalizma, a već i tada je imala izdvojenu poziciju jer je izučila umijeće poniranja do esencijalne ekspresivnosti pokretom, te nedugo vokalnu tehniku temeljila na istočnjačkim tradicijama (tzv. ekstenizirani glas zatim i glasom prije nego riječima. No, teško se kod nje ne može govoriti o eklekticizmu budući da kompletirajući tako autorstvo svojim scenskim djelima, koja se, uz neke Monk ponajprije asimilira ono što drži potrebnim za tehnički aspekt njezinih ograde, mogu svrstati u glazbeni teatar.

All flesh had corrupted its way; God's clean sun shone on a pool full of death. But life still throbbed at Haran in northern Mesopotamia, for Abraham lived there, a newcomer from Ur in the south. All future history would flow from him; he was to become "the father of us all ... our father in the sight of God" (Rom 4 : 17). For one day at Haran, in the middle of the nineteenth century, a merciful God spoke to the heart of this tribal chief (Gen 12: 1-3) and broke it wide open with a freshet of mercy, gushing forth and bubbling over to cleanse all heartS by faith.
