RECENT VENUES: On Behalf of Nature premiered January 18th, 2013 at Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, Los Angeles, CA with additional performances at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, the Edinburgh International Festival, Krannert Center at the University of Illinois, and this season at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: For her newest music-theater work, Meredith Monk offers a poetic meditation on our intimate connection to nature and the fragility of its ecology. Within this world, Monk evokes the Buddhist notion of the existence of different realm categories—the idea of joining heaven and earth by way of human beings. Drawing additional inspiration from writers and researchers who have sounded the alarm on the precarious state of our global ecology, Monk and her acclaimed Vocal Ensemble create a liminal space where human, natural and spiritual elements are woven into a delicate whole, illuminating the interconnection and interdependency of us all. The Vocal Ensemble consists of multitalented singers / performers / instrumentalists Sidney Chen, Ellen Fisher, Katie Geissinger, Bohdan Hilash, John Hollenbeck, Bruce Rameker and Allison Sniffin. Lighting Design by Elaine Buckholtz; Sound design by Jody Elff; Costume Designer/Scenography by Yoshio Yabara; Production Management by Philip Sandstrom; Technical Direction by Johnny Chanthavong. On Behalf of Nature has received developmental support through residencies at UCLA (April 2012), Centre Culturel Andre Malraux in Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy, France (May 2012), Le Théâtre De Lorient, Centre Dramatique National in Lorient, France (May 2012), Park Avenue Armory in New York (July 2012/April 2013), Roulette in Brooklyn, NY (October 2012) and Duke University (October 2012). It features Monk with the extraordinary ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists that make up Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble. For this evening’s concert, repertoire from several of Monk’s most recent works, On Behalf of Nature (2013), impermanence (2004/2006) and mercy (2001) will be featured, alongside classic works from the 1970s and 1980s, offering an expansive view of Monk’s 50 years of making work. In 1965 Monk began her innovative exploration of the voice as a multifaceted instrument and formed Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble in 1978 to further expand her musical textures and forms. Comprised of some of the finest and most adventurous singers and instrumentalists active in new music, the Ensemble has received multiple awards and critical acclaim, including a 2008 GRAMMY nomination for impermanence. Appearing in festivals, theaters and concert halls around the world, Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble can also be heard on numerous recordings on the ECM New Music Series label. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Meredith Monk's wordless music combines the technical virtuosity of classical music, the poignancy and directness of folk music, the freedom and flexibility of jazz and the excitement of rock and roll. A pioneer in what is now called “extended vocal technique”, she has been dazzling, startling, provoking and delighting audiences since 1965 with her visionary work. The rotating repertoire for her solo concerts is selected from Music for Unaccompanied Voice (1969-1994) Music for Voice and Piano (1972-2004), and includes Gotham Lullaby, Travelling, Madwoman's Vision, Choosing Companions, The Tale, Songs from the Hill, and more recent compositions.
