Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

She felt a tug at her leg. “Miss Trisha,” Tighe asked, “is this right?’ The little boy with milky dark skin and fiercely blue eyes had just shoved his art work at her, hitting her pant leg with the purpley mix of colors. He realized almost instantly what he had done and backed suddenly away from her, as if he’d been struck. Trish bent to his short stature, reached not for his arm as she might have, but for the paint soaked, flopping paper. “Tighe, this is perrrfect,” she said with great affectation, “just the exact amount of red and blue I was looking for.” His eyes transfixed on the splotch of paint on her leg, Tighe seemed not to notice her smile or her effort to point to the area of his picture to which she was showing particular admiration.

Angela's Ashes A Memoir of a Childhood By Frank McCourt This book is dedicated to my brothers, Malachy, Michael, Alphonsus. I learn from you, I admire you and I love you. A c k n o w l e d g m e n t s This is a small hymn to an exaltation of women. R'lene Dahlberg fanned the embers. Lisa Schwarzbaum read early pages and encouraged me. Mary Breasted Smyth, elegant novelist herself, read the first third and passed it on to Molly Friedrich, who became my agent and thought that Nan Graham, Editor-in-Chief at Scribner, would be just the right person to put the book on the road. And Molly was right. My daughter, Maggie, has shown me how life can be a grand adventure, while exquisite moments with my granddaughter, Chiara, have helped me recall a small child's wonder. My wife, Ellen, listened while I read and cheered me to the final page. I am blessed among men. I My father and mother should have stayed in New York where they met and married and where I was born. Instead, they returned to Ireland when I was four, my brother, Malachy, three, the twins, Oliver and Eugene, barely one, and my sister, Margaret, dead and gone. When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I survived at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood.

Words spoke to you, gave up their secrets; at that moment, whole universes opened. You became, irrevocably, a reader.” All children deserve the promise that books hold. Whether they transport us to another world, make us laugh or cry, teach us something new, or introduce us to people we wouldn’t otherwise meet, we are thankful for their gifts. In turn, all children deserve the gift of reading.

SJS Sing Along Word Sheet July 13 Love Songs When I Fall in Love When I fall in love it will be forever, or I’ll never fall in love. In a restless world like this is, love is ended before it’s begun, and too many moonlight kisses seem to cool in the warmth of the sun. When I give my heart it will be completely, or I’ll never give my heart; And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too is when I fall in love with you. Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man Oh, listen sister, I love that mister man And I can’t tell you why. There ain’t no reason why I should love that man. It must be somethin’ the angels done plan. Fish got to swim, birds got to fly, I got to love one man till I die, Can’t help lovin’ that man of mine. Tell me he’s lazy, tell me he’s slow, Tell me I’m crazy, maybe I know. Can’t help lovin’ that man of mine. When he’s goes away, that’s a rainy day, And when he comes back, that day is fine! The sun will shine! He can come home as late as can be, home without him is no home to me. Can’t help lovin’ that man of mine! Somebody Loves Me Somebody love me, I wonder who, I wonder who it can be. Somebody loves me, I wish I knew who it can be worries me.

The content has been developed by German native speakers and British Primary experts in methodology with the intention of enabling teachers to make a flying start with teaching German at Key Stage 2. The active and enjoyable exercises can easily be adapted for Key Stage 1 and even Foundation Stage. Children will be introduced to the language of each chapter by two engaging hand puppets, a frog called Felix Frosch and a duck called Franzi Ente. They live in a special German letterbox. This dwelling can be created easily by ordering a letterbox sticker from the Goethe-Institut and sticking it to any box or suitcase that is declared the habitat of the hand puppets. The theme for each lesson is introduced through a story involving the two characters who appear from the dwelling as the children sing the welcome song. The sequence of the chapters is designed to ensure progression.
