From the President

The Men’s Cultural Alliance (MCA) of Collier County is an organization of the male members of the Jewish Federation of Collier County (JFCC) whose purpose is to create friendship and camaraderie among its members by attending and participating in social, intellectual, Volunteerism, sporting and athletic activities.

Now in its sixth year of existence, over 500 men have joined the group and participate in a wide array of activities ranging from monthly luncheon meetings, recreational sporting activities, study and educational groups, and volunteerism. Membership in the MCA makes each member an official member of the JFCC.

Paid up members of the MCA are eligible to join all programs. It is necessary, however, to sign up for each program. Many groups are limited in the number of participants in order to allow each member the best possible experience.

The MCA actively welcomes new members, and encourages their input in organizing new activities, and in participating in all of our stimulating and exciting programs.

For further information, please feel free to contact me. My best wishes for a fun filled and enjoyable season with the MCA.

Big Sonia 93 minutes

BIG SONIA is a documentary film about a tiny woman with huge impact. Standing tall at 4’8″, Sonia Warshawski is a tiny woman with a huge personality. Diva, business owner and Holocaust survivor, Sonia has just been served an eviction notice for John’s Tailoring, the last (and most popular) shop of a dying mall in suburban Kansas City. Sonia struggles with retirement, while her life lessons span generations.

29

For years, Sonia Warshawski has been an inspirational public speaker at schools, churches and prisons, where her stories of surviving the Holocaust as a teenager have inspired countless students, prisoners and ex-cons who once felt their own traumas would leave them broken forever. But when Sonia is served an eviction notice for her iconic tailor shop, which has thrived in the bottom of a now-abandoned mall for 35 years, she is confronted with an agonizing decision: either open up a new shop-at age 90-or retire. For a woman who admits that she stays busy "to keep the dark parts away", facing retirement dredges up fears she'd long forgot she had, and her traumatic personal past resurfaces. Following Sonia as she continues on the motivational speaker circuit (even as she navigates her own struggles) BIG SONIA explores what it means to be a survivor. Will you let your trauma define you? Or will your past make you stronger?

Life Animated 89 Minutes

Based on the book this year’s PEOPLE OF THE BOOK speaker Ron Suskind

Owen Suskind was a boy of considerable promise, until he's diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. As Owen withdrew into his silent state, his parents almost lost hope that he would find some way to meaningfully interact with his world. However, that way was found through animated films, especially ones by Walt Disney Pictures, which provided Owen a way to understand the world through its stories to the point of creating his own. 33

This film covers the life of Owen and how he manages to become as functional as possible with the help of Disney and his family to the point of having his own life. However, Owen soon learns as well that there is more to real life than what Disney can illustrate in animation even as his family prepares itself for an uncertain future with him.

Upon its release the film received rave reviews from critics and won numerous awards including the Sundance Film Festival award for Best Direction and the Special Achievement Annie Award. It was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature category at the 89th Academy Awards, but lost to O.J.: Made In America.

10:00am screening

Bogdan's Journey 90 minutes English Subtitles

In a story that begins with murder and ends with reconciliation, one man persuades the people of Kielce, Poland, to confront the truth about the darkest moment in their past: Kielce was the site of Europe’s last Jewish pogrom. In 1946 forty holocaust survivors seeking shelter in a downtown building were murdered by townspeople. Communist authorities suppressed the story, leaving the town deeply embittered.

35

For Bogdan Bialek, a Catholic Pole, anti-Semitism is a sin. This conviction is the animating force of his life. Conflict over the pogrom was still a festering wound when Bialek moved to Kielce in the late 70s. He was shocked by the poisoned atmosphere of his new town. Trained as a psychologist, he has made it his life’s work both to persuade people to embrace their past and to reconnect the city with the international Jewish community.

2:00pm screening

Fever at Dawn 110 Minutes English Subtitles

36

The story of a love born in the strangest of circumstances between two long-suffering survivors of the hell that was the Holocaust. Their love overcomes all obstacles in its path including death when it eventually comes. Set in the Swedish rehabilitation camps during the autumn and winter of 1945.

One of the girls is 19-year-old Lili, who likes Miklós's letter, and they start corresponding. Based on the novel: Fever at Dawn.

Jerry Lewis: The Man Behind the Clown 61 minutes

Since the early days, - in the line of Chaplin, Keaton and Laurel - had the masses laughing with his visual gags, pantomime sketches and signature slapstick humor. Yet Lewis was far more than just a clown. He was also a groundbreaking filmmaker whose unquenchable curiosity led him to write, produce, stage and direct many of the films he appeared in, resulting in such adored classics as The Bellboy, , , and The Nutty Professor. By becoming a "total filmmaker," Lewis surpassed expectations as a comic performer and emerged as a driving force in Hollywood. He broke boundaries with his technical innovations, unique voice and keen visual eye, even garnering respect and praise overseas. However, American critics and the 38 cultural elite tended to reject his abrasive art. While they viewed Lewis as nothing more than just a clown, others like the French recognized him as a true auteur, giving rise to questions that have perplexed American pop culture for over 50 years: Why do Europeans love Jerry Lewis? What is this inexplicable aversion Americans have towards him? Is he just a brash, anything-for-yuk buffoon? Or is he a creative genius? Who is the man behind the clown

April 5 2:00pm

Two short films: "The Last Blintz" and “Operation Orchard"

The Last Blintz 30 minutes

The closing of the Cafe Edison (aka The Polish Tea Room) is not just a story about another famous show business 39

haunt shutting its doors - which it is, big time - it is an American Dream-come-true story about a multi- generational, big-hearted, mom-and-pop family business that is tragically and pre-maturely coming to an end. It's also about gentrification on steroids and all-consuming greed. It's about the heart, soul, authenticity and distinctiveness of cities globally being flagrantly ripped away for yet another impersonal, cookie-cutter, corporate chain. It's too late for The Cafe Edison... but, looking to the future, THE LAST BLINTZ is an impassioned plea for 'progress' that honors the past, protects and future and preserves the heart and culture of our great cities...before there's nothing left.

Operation Orchard 30 Minutes

40

Operation Orchard was an Israeli airstrike on a suspected nuclear reactor in the Deir ez-Zor region of Syria, which occurred just after midnight (local time) on September 6, 2007. The Israeli and U.S. governments imposed virtually total news blackouts immediately after the raid that held for seven months. The White House and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) subsequently confirmed that American intelligence had also indicated the site was a nuclear facility with a military purpose, though Syria denies this. A 2009 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) investigation reported evidence of uranium and graphite and concluded that the site bore features resembling an undeclared nuclear reactor. IAEA was initially unable to confirm or deny the nature of the site because, according to IAEA, Syria failed to cooperate with the IAEA investigation. Syria has disputed these claims. Nearly four years later, in April 2011, the IAEA officially confirmed that the site was a nuclear reactor.

Group registration will begin on September 11, 2017.

He and his team partner were named North American pair of the year by Newswink in 1969. Sid describes tournament style winks as a game of digital dexterity and strategy akin to chess. You will learn to pot out (it’s legal in winks) and how to play with your squidger. This activity is not recommended if you have an arthritic thumb. You do not have to sign a waiver to play this sport.
