Jim Crow in the City: Spatial Segregation in Columbus, Georgia, 1890-1944 by Anna Michele Traylor A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Auburn, Alabama May 7, 2016 Copyright 2016 by Anna Michele Traylor Approved by Reagan Grimsley, Chair, Assistant Professor of History Keith Hebert, Assistant Professor of History David Carter, Associate Professor of History Abstract Between 1890 and 1944 thousands of African Americans moved to Columbus in search of greater economic and social opportunities. Despite Jim Crow laws and the threat of violence, African Americans built a thriving black community, largely separate from white public life, that affected the city’s geographic development. Using city directories, census data, Sanborn maps, and oral histories, this thesis tracks the changes in Columbus’s spatial patterns. As geographic segregation in the city increased, African Americans created their own discrete community within the city through the development of two black neighborhoods, Liberty and West Highlands. Race, not class, organized Columbus’s black population. Columbus’s growing black middle class lived on the same blocks as its poorest black citizens. As the separation between black and white grew in the city, Columbus’s black businesses relocated from the central business district to black neighborhoods. Black businesses that served the black community thrived and helped transform Liberty and West Highlands into a mixed residential-commercial -

The Struggle for Voting Rights in Mississippi ~ the Early Years Excerpted from “History & Timeline” Mississippi — the Eye of the Storm It is a trueism of the era that as you travel from the north to the south the deeper grows the racism, the worse the poverty, and the more brutal the repression. In the geography of the Freedom Movement the South is divided into mental zones according to the virulence of bigotry and oppression: the “Border States” (Delaware, Kentucky, Missouri, and the urban areas of Maryland); the “Mid South” (Virginia, the East Shore of Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas); and the “Deep South” (South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana). And then there is Mississippi, in a class by itself — the absolute deepest pit of racism, violence, and poverty. During the post-Depression decades of the 1940s and 1950s, most of the South experiences enormous economic changes. “King Cotton” declines as agriculture diversifies and mechanizes. In 1920, almost a million southern Blacks work in agriculture, by 1960 that number has declined by 75% to around 250,000 — resulting in a huge migration off the land into the cities both North and South. By 1960, almost 60% of southern Blacks live in urban areas (compared to roughly 30% in 1930). But those economic changes come slowly, if at all, to Mississippi and the Black Belt areas of Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana. In 1960, almost 70% of Mississippi Blacks still live in rural areas, and more than a third (twice the percentage in the rest of the South) work the land as sharecroppers, tenant farmers, and farm laborers. -

Wallace January 14, 1963 The Civil Rights Movement; to most Americans those four words conjure up mental images of violence, white supremacists, African American leadership, and triumph. Naturally, the two states most associated with the struggle for civil rights are Mississippi and Alabama. It is debatable to conclude that one state was worse or more important than the other. When analyzing Alabama’s role in the overall movement opinions are predominantly based on the key events of three cities: Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham. Montgomery claimed national attention after the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, which made Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. household names. The capital of Alabama obtained further notoriety on May 20, 1961 when Freedom Riders, such as John Lewis, Jim Zwerg, and John Siegenthaler, a representative of the United States government, were badly beaten at the Greyhound bus terminal. Selma will always be etched in the conscience of America. A nation watched on “Bloody Sunday” March 7, 1965 as Alabama state troopers pummeled a peaceful crowd marching as they attempted to cross the Alabama River over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Then there is Birmingham. 1 Birmingham, undeniably, was the most violent and most racist city in the United States.
