PICKING UP THE PIECES Confronting heritage trauma in the post-conflict national museums of Syria and Iraq A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Humanities Leiden University In Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts and Culture Name: Tommi Arbiv Student Number: S2253585 Email address: [email protected] First reader: Dr Mirjam Hoijtink Specialisation: Contemporary Art in a Global Perspective Academic year: 2018/2019 Abstract This thesis follows the trajectories of two museums, the National Museum of Damascus and the Iraq Museum in Baghdad, across the past two decades, to investigate the extent to which notions of nation, national heritage and the public good have come to be evaluated before, during and after conflict. Charged with pride and burdened with pain, the material heritage of this region in many ways stood at the centre of the conflicts of the past twenty years, and would come to define the future of the nations of Syria and Iraq. Tracing the histories of the two national museums, from closure to reopening, through the vantage point of the antiquities in their collections, this thesis strives to illustrate how Syrian and Iraqi heritage has been appropriated and narrated in strategic and contested ways by a diverse network of invested actors, both locally and globally. Drawing on exhibitions and press material surrounding pivotal events in these museums’ biographies, this thesis argues that in suppressing the legacy of pain and trauma with which their patrimonies are inscribed, local and international culture professionals impeded post-conflict healing and inadvertently acted against the interest of the public good. -

Report on the situation of cultural heritage in Iraq up to 30 May 20031 BACKGROUND In line with its constitutional mandate in the field of cultural heritage and following diplomatic actions in order to alert the coalition authorities to the damages to the cultural heritage of Iraq as a result from the conflict, the Director-General convened at UNESCO Headquarters the first meeting of high-level international experts on the cultural heritage of Iraq (17 April 2003) to respond to the alarming situation affecting the cultural heritage of Iraq as a result from the conflict. The meeting had the following 3 objectives: (i) to coordinate the international scientific network of experts on Iraqi cultural heritage; (ii) to formulate guidelines for a consolidated strategy in the field of post-conflict intervention and rehabilitation of the cultural heritage of Iraq; (iii) to devise an emergency safeguarding plan. Following the recommendations of the above-mentioned meeting, a second meeting organized upon the initiative of the British Museum in London (29 April 2003), focusing on the situation of the Iraqi National Museum in particular and the need to restore inventories. Upon the approval of Office for Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance (ORHA) and in close collaboration with the US Observer Mission to UNESCO, the Director-General called for the organization of an urgent expert mission to assess the extent of damage and loss to cultural property in Iraq and elaborate a first report on the state of Iraqi cultural heritage. The UNESCO experts’ mission visited Baghdad, from 17 to 20 May 2003. PARTICIPANTS The first UNESCO mission to Iraq was led by Mr Mounir Bouchenaki, Assistant Director- General for Culture of UNESCO. -

ARQUEOLOGÍA INTRODUCCIÓN Mesopotamia, modern Iraq, has often, quite rightly, been called the cradle of civilization. Here, from about 8000 BC onwards, in the rich alluvial plain created by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, we find evidence for settled communities that are dependent on farming rather than hunting and gathering. After 3000 BC we see the formation of the first cities, the introduction of complex economies, and the invention of writing. In the south part of Mesopotamia, Sumerian civilization flourished in the 3rd millennium BC at cities such as Warka and Ur. In the 2nd millennium BC, the Sumerians were replaced in central Mesopotamia by the Babylonians, whose capital was at Babylon and whose best-known king was Hammurabi (1792-1750 BC), famous for his law code. -

ASSESSMENT OF DAMAGE TO LIBRARIES AND ARCHIVES IN IRAQ 1. Update based on: • Verbal report by Dr Donny George, Director of Research, Iraqi Museum, to the meeting convened by the British Museum and UNESCO 29th April 2003 to discuss International Support for Iraq’s Museums • Written report by Edouard Méténier, a French researcher who spent 6 months working in Iraqi libraries, mostly in Baghdad from November 2002 until early April (Aperçu sur l’état des bibliothèques et dépôts d’archives irakiens au terme de la guerre d’avril 2003) • Information posted on various web-groups (H-ISLAM, H-LEVANT, etc.) • Best source of information on Iraq's manuscript libraries - their collections and the bibliography of those collections - is G. Roper ed. World survey of Islamic manuscripts Vol. 2 (London, 1993). 2. Libraries in Baghdad: • Library of the Iraqi Museum: one of the finest collections on history and archaeology of the Middle East – most evacuated before the war started – completely protected • Islamic Manuscripts Collection of the Iraqi Museum: about 4,000 volumes - likewise evacuated before the war to a bunker away from the main museum building – all safe (i.e. not transferred to the Saddam Manuscripts House in 1988 as reported in Roper's Survey) • National Library of Iraq: about 500K printed books and serials (including 5K rare books) – looted and burnt (suffered from its location opposite the Iraqi Defence Ministry building) - but some holdings at least (e.g. early newspapers) reported to have been evacuated beforehand and to be safe • National Archives of Iraq (which shared the same building as the National Library): containing documents from the Ottoman period onwards - size of contents unknown (no published catalogue traced) – likewise looted and burnt, but again some material at least (e.g.
