Corazze in metallo, ottimamente forgiate, ma con un dettaglio inquietante: la loro dimensione assolutamente spropositata. Il grande conquistatore macedone, infatti, mirava a terrorizzare gli avversari, facendo loro credere che fossero in procinto di scontrarsi con un esercito di giganti1. Ma Alessandro Magno non fu il primo condottiero, e di certo neppure l’ultimo, ad utilizzare stratagemmi di questo tipo. Nel corso dei secoli, gli eserciti di tutto il mondo sono infatti ricorsi a strategie di ogni genere al fine di minare il morale delle truppe nemiche. Basti ricordare i legionari romani dell’età imperiale, che prima di ogni combattimento colpivano in maniera ritmata gli scudi con i propri gladi, in modo tale da generare un rumore percepibile a grandi distanze e che avrebbe senz’altro inquietato il nemico2. Oppure si pensi all’operato del Psychological Warfare Branch (PWB), sezione per l’informazione e la propaganda delle forze alleate, istituita da Eisenhower nel 1942 ed operante prima in Nord Africa quindi in Europa, il cui scopo era esclusivamente quello di produrre materiale propagandistico per abbattere il morale del nemico3. Gli esempi potrebbero essere innumerevoli. In questa sede ci basta evidenziare come, nel corso della storia, i conflitti (e non soltanto quelli bellici) abbiano sempre avuto almeno una caratteristica in comune: l’utilizzo strategico e strumentale dell’informazione. Nella storia, in genere, il target principale delle istituzioni (più o meno formali) preposte alla manipolazione delle informazioni è sempre stato il nemico. Indipendentemente dal fatto che il “nemico” fosse un Paese straniero, in guerra o meno con il proprio, un partito politico (basti pensare, nell’immediato secondo dopoguerra, alle dispute, senza esclusione di colpi, tra il Partito Comunista Italiano e la Democrazia Cristiana) o un’entità di altro genere (un gruppo terroristico, ecc…). Il primo punto di rottura con questa tradizione si ebbe nel corso della prima guerra mondiale. I bombardamenti aerei sulle città4, unitamente ai razionamenti alimentari cui erano costrette le popolazioni civili nel corso della Grande Guerra, fecero in modo che anch’esse si trovassero costrette a sperimentare in prima persona la paura e le sofferenze derivanti da un conflitto militare. MA GLI ITALIANI? ESSI MORIRANNO. IL TEMPO E’ BREVE. AVETE COMBATTUTO CON ONORE E BENE. VOLETE SACRIFICARVI PER I TEDESCHI? IL SOLDATO SAGGIO SA CHE COSA FARE QUANDO VEDE CHE LA BATTAGLIA E’ PERDUTA. VENITE DA NOI [segue una sorta di “coupon” con su scritto “LASCIAPASSARE, Laissez-passer, Safe-conduct”]”. 4 Ancora molto primitivi. Si veda: http://www.sapere.it/tca/minisite/storia/guerre_tecnologie/trasporti_05.d.html. 6 livello quantitativo e qualitativo della produzione bellica5, a contribuire alla nascita di quella componente strategica che da allora venne battezzata “fronte interno”. Senza il supporto di un popolo che condividesse appieno i motivi della guerra che stava conducendo (in prima persona, seppur all’interno dei confini nazionali e lontano dai campi di battaglia) non sarebbe più stato possibile, per un Paese, uscire vincitore da un conflitto militare. Il crollo dello zarismo russo A fare per primo le spese di questo mutamento, fu lo zarismo russo: il malcontento diffuso sia tra i soldati al fronte (male equipaggiati e privi di comandanti competenti), sia all’interno della popolazione civile (già dai primi mesi di guerra, in Russia iniziarono a scarseggiare beni di prima necessità, quali pane e carbone), portò la Duma ad esautorare di fatto Nicola II, cui non rimase altra scelta se non quella di abdicare. E se neppure gli insorti di febbraio riuscirono a comprendere che la popolazione russa non ne voleva più sapere di sostenere un conflitto tremendamente dispendioso in termini di vite umane (in totale furono circa cinque milioni i soldati russi caduti o feriti in battaglia) ed apparentemente insensato quale quello che stavano combattendo ai confini orientali dell’Europa, fu la drammatica Rivoluzione d’Ottobre a mettere definitivamente la parola fine sulla partecipazione della Russia alla prima guerra mondiale6. L’operazione “Giusta Causa” a Panama Da quel lontano giorno del 1917 fino ad oggi il copione non è più cambiato. Basti pensare all’“Operazione Giusta Causa” di Panama, che culminò nell’arresto del capo del governo (ed ex collaboratore della CIA) Manuel Noriega. Gli americani appoggiarono in toto la scelta militare del governo Bush, soltanto dopo aver visto gli uomini di Noriega linciare,

Last year they were charging twenty per cent of the principle on the first of the month. Nervous shopkeepers were easily confused into believing that they were paying the same rates as banks. Now it was even easier; a few dollars every day. But all the borrower ever pays is interest. This book was meant to be simply and regularly, the biographies and testimonies of the self immolators. I wrote it after coming across a self immolation that referred to three others. Could there be so many? It remained a line on a page of notes I was adding to and sometimes getting to one or another. A month or more later, I addressed the note, that still stood out, and looked it up. Investigating the self immolator and his reference to three others, or being among three such, I found more, and looking into those, more, until it was dozens. The source of information I thought should didn't exist in a book or anywhere online, and I just began to write it, naturally and as a stream. As I collected and searched out, and wrote the biographies and copied or translated the testaments and statements, it turned out there were more still, until it was hundreds and the book reached the size it is. I wrote and edited it in about a month in spring 2013, and continued to discover and add--and some added themselves, Tibetans continued to self immolate while I wrote--until I stopped writing.

Japanese records studied after the war listed an attack by minelayer Wakataka on a supposed United States submarine on 23 November, off Kaoe Bay, Halmahera, with the Japanese ship noting the attack produced oily black water columns that contained wood and cork splinters and later a raft was found. This is the only reported attack in the appropriate area at that time. Also, Japanese minefields are now known to have been placed in various positions along the north coast of Sulawesi (Celebes) in Capelin's area, and she may have been lost because of a mine explosion. Gone without a trace, with all her crew, Capelin remains in the list of ships lost without a known cause. Capelin received one battle star for World War II service. She is credited with having sunk 3,127 tons of shipping on her single war patrol. The press spoke then of suicide, but in the essence, it is not. It is not even a protest. What the monks said in the letters they left before burning themselves aimed only at alarming, at moving the hearts of the oppressors, and at calling the attention of the world to the suffering endured then by the Vietnamese. To burn oneself by fire is to prove that what one is saying is of the utmost importance. - Thich Nhat Hanh, “In Search of the Enemy of Man” Self-immolation as a practice has its roots in various religious and cultural traditions but was rarely under the purview of Western civilization until it exploded onto the stage in 1963. The self-immolation accredited with beginning a wave of similar incidents was that of Thich Quang Duc, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who burned himself publicly to bring awareness to ongoing religious persecution (Crosby, 60). Images of Quang Duc sitting calmly in flames, defying his own intense bodily pain, have become enduring symbols of opposition to the forces of oppression. Although some Eastern societies employed self-immolation, most notably through various examples of widow-burning and Buddhist devotional burnings (Crosby, 61), there was no significant history of burning oneself in Western culture.     National Curriculum Learning Pack Social & Economic Issues Greenham Common The peace camp at Greenham Common was first set up in 1981, when a group of protestors from Wales marched to RAF Greenham Common Airbase, in Berkshire. The march was designed to challenge the sighting of 96 cruise missiles on the base by the United States Air Force (USAF). The group chained themselves to the fence of the airbase and demanded a debate with the government on nuclear armament. When this request was ignored, they set up a peace camp just outside the fence to the base. Originally the protesters were made up of both men and women, but in 1982 it became known as the Women’s Peace Camp when the camp became women only. Later that year 300, 000 women arrived to disrupt the exercises of the USAF. These disruptions ranged from laying down in front of lorries, to disrupting exercises and cutting through the fence of the base to walk on the common itself, which they argued was public land, a decision later supported by the law lords. Many attempts were made by the local council to evict the women from the site, such as on the 4th April 1984, when bailiffs, supported by 300 police officers, cleared the camp. However, not everyone supported this action which caused the Labour MP, Tony Benn, to state that “civil liberties in Britain are being removed by order of the government”. The eviction did not last long, and by the next day, women had already set up new camps on the common, where they remained until 2000.
